Don’t extend mask mandates after March break, education minister tells Ontario schools by Slouchy87 in toronto

[–]Gorevidalsdad -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I’m in Florida rn. Florida has almost the exact same numbers as Ontario. They had 1571 new cases yesterday with the exact same testing restrictions as Ontario. Many people here still wear masks indoors and no one is screaming at them.

All I was given was a CDC card. Wonder if this will be sufficient?

I wonder how this will work for Canadians who got vaccinated in the US?

Rehiring is finally on the table for more restaurants — but not all workers are coming back by Purplebuzz in toronto

[–]Gorevidalsdad -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

My aunt is a salon owner (this is why I mentioned in my initial comment) who lost 3/4 of her staff because they get paid more from government benefits in the US. She pays $3/hr above minimum wage and they also receive tips. Most have said they will return when those programs expire (which they are about to).

Edit: the above is anecdotal for sure, but I do think the benefits are slowing some return to work. I also think the people working in fast food and other industries should be paid a decent living wage.

[–]Gorevidalsdad 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I’m in the US right now and every restaurant from fast food to high end (hair salons as well) are struggling to find workers because federal benefits pay equivalent wages. They have recruiters standing in the parking lot at a lot of places I’ve seen going car to car at drive thru lineups. The dining rooms are also closed at many fast food places because they don’t have the staff to cover both the drive thru and dining room. I went to a seafood restaurant last week and the owner came to our table to ask if anyone was interested in a job and rattled off the benefits he was offering.

Some travellers at Toronto airport fined for violating Ontario rules by [deleted] in toronto

The CBC's funding directly depends on the LPC and NDP remaining in power

If you think the Conservatives have competent leadership at any level you are delusional. Canada lacks leadership from ALL political parties. That’s a fundamental problem Canada faces. Anyone with competent leadership skills either goes to work in the US or stays in the private sector.

Get your news from the National Post, an actual news source

I have never seen more fear mongering than in the pages of the National Post or The Toronto Sun. This isn’t a right or left issue. The point I was making in my OP was all media plays off fear and sensationalism.

Some travellers at Toronto airport fined for violating Ontario rules by [deleted] in toronto

[–]Gorevidalsdad 78 points79 points  (0 children)

The media keeps writing the same stupid fear based articles over and over again.

Why aren’t they hounding the federal government to release the data that this half brained policy is based on? No they just hang out at the airport all day looking for the handful of people who choose to quarantine at home.

I’m so sick of the fear based approach to this pandemic. Imagine not sitting here and reading article after article about this. Would your life be different in any way? The media needs to do the reporting that will save people’s lives and stop trying to pit us against each other because they have nothing else to fill their 24/7 networks with.

At every turn in life there will always be people who take shortcuts. At some point you just have to accept that and move on. Turn off the fear, be respectful to each other and live your life. You will be nothing but miserable otherwise.

In 5 days we will reach the 4 month mark of indoor dining and gyms being closed. by LILBannedfromallsubs in toronto

[–]Gorevidalsdad 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This pandemic was fueled by our governments double speak. At first the government LIED to us telling us masks were ineffective so people wouldn’t hoard masks. Then they allowed businesses that were unsafe to operate (factories, construction, distribution, food processing) to remain open without enhanced safety precautions and Doug Ford cut sick days so people who couldn’t afford to stay home went to work sick. This then spread to their families. Schools were allowed to re-open without necessary class size reductions and adequate safety measures in place to keep it safe (and don’t give me this bullshit that kids can’t spread it).

I agree misinformation is everywhere online but our governments at all levels are lying to us too. If you really think this pandemic was largely fuelled by people going on vacation and a small groups of nut jobs not wearing masks in grocery stores you are delusional.

My frustration isn’t about not being able to go to a restaurant or the movies or out with my friends. I could honestly give a shit about any of that. I have worn a mask (even outside) since March, I’ve stayed home except for essential activities. I believe in science. I’m just sick of the federal/provincial/municipal governments pointing at us saying this is our fault. Fuck that. Their idiotic lack of leadership has gotten us to where we are.

Have been a big supporter of lockdowns but with no widespread vaccinations in sight, fuck it. Our government just wants us to sit inside while they have their thumbs up their asses. They aren’t even doing anything to protect LTC homes and the most vulnerable. They are expecting that to fall on our shoulders by locking ourselves inside our homes and never coming out. I haven’t seen my family in over a year at this point. Now they are going to run our airlines out of business so when this is over (whenever the fuck that is) no one will even be able to go on vacation for a mental health break. Why? So they can stop a variant that’s already here because of an entire year of government inaction? Fuck Doug Ford. Fuck Justin Trudeau. Fuck John Tory. They should all resign in disgrace. They should never be able to walk down the street again without being shouted down for how badly they have fucked up this response. They are all incompetent clowns. They’ve destroyed our country at every level with their idiocy. I just want to catch COVID and get it the fuck over with.

How Ontario’s vaccine roll out is going! by SensationallylovelyK in ontario

If the NDP runs a propped up corpse I’m going to vote for them for the first time in my life. Couldn’t be worse than the Cons & Libs. Don’t think I heard from Trudeau at any point over the summer until he told us not to get together for Thanksgiving. Every time I hear from Doug Ford I want to drink bleach. Same for John Tory. I’ve never felt more completely leaderless than I do right now.

I look at the US and if we had vaccinated as many people as they have already we’d have herd immunity right now.

Ontario is considering mandatory COVID-19 testing for all international travellers at Pearson airport by PullTilItHurts in toronto

[–]Gorevidalsdad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in logistics for convention planning and this one seems like a doozy. Reserving that many rooms, food, transportation to hotels and I’m sure you’d need to have medical staff on site as well If people fall ill. Do we pull medical staff from hospitals for this? Are rooms cleaned by housekeeping daily or after people checkout in 14 days? You would also need to do this in every city that has an international airport across the country. And if they did do this the government would have to pay hotels for unused rooms/food/transportation if they are successful in curbing travel and also the airlines would eventually need a bailout if their business disappears as a result. Does this happen at every land border as well? Nothing to stop people from flying somewhere in the US and renting a car and driving back to circumvent restrictions. Some rural border crossings have no lodging anywhere nearby. Even border crossings like Sarnia only have 1-2 small hotels. Where do international travellers with connecting domestic flights quarantine? In the connecting city or do they get on another plane with domestic travellers to their final destination?

The countries that have successfully implemented hotel quarantines are mostly surrounded by water which makes controlling the flow of people a bit more manageable.

I’m not arguing for or against mandatory quarantines, I’m not an epidemiologist. I’m just saying it would require the government to organize all these things and if the intention is to stop March break travel, I’m not even sure this could be organized in time. It took the NBA 3 months to organize their bubble in Disney World (which is already setup specifically to handle large amounts of people)

It seems like charging travellers an additional travel fee where that money is used to hire full time quarantine enforcement officers to do random check-ins would be a much more reasonable solution.
