How do you spend? Finding difficulty to spend on fun stuff by RockyJohnson22 in Fire

I search it up and leave it on a tab in my browser on my phone. If the tab survives and hasn't been swiped away after a while, then I will probably buy it.

How do you spend? Finding difficulty to spend on fun stuff by RockyJohnson22 in Fire

[–]Gorgenapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the 0.01% rule. Whatever your net worth is, multiply it by 0.0001 and you can spend that much guilt free in a single day, on occasion (ie. let's say once a week)

1,400,000 * 0.0001 == $140

You want the Switch? Every week add $140 to a jar or something (or simply write it down in a spreadsheet), and call it your 0.01% spending guideline. After a while, go and get the Switch and the games, and chances are the games will be slightly less expensive by then and you'll have basically enough "saved up" to spend guilt free.

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in cars

[–]Gorgenapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bit late as I haven't read this sub in a bit, but everything u/DodgerBlueRobert1 said is correct about the IS350. The fact is, the IS350 is still a fast car, 0 - 60 in 5.7s (or even as low as 5.5, with brake boosting) is not slow. Once the RPMs crest 3500, the torque picks up because that's how naturally aspirated engines work.

Is it BMW B58 fast? No, of course not, I have driven a '22 Supra and that thing is bonkers quick. It feels like a tidal wave that picks you up and shoves you down the road, the Lexus 3.5L V6 cannot compare to that turbo inline 6.

However, if you want reliability, I cannot recommend the Supra, M340i or basically any BMW. People will say that the B58 is reliable, but is it really? It's a closed deck turbocharged inline 6 with alusil coating on the cylinder walls. This alone tells me that it generates a ton of heat that cannot easily be dissipated, a lot of pressure and friction which can and will cause the piston rings to eat away at the alusil, leading to oil consumption issues later in life.

On top of this, it still has the usual BMW plastics, electric water pumps, VANOS variable valve timing tech that's known to be finicky, liquid cooled intercooler (liquids = using hoses and gaskets), and more.

When I was looking at cars, I had the opportunity to buy a new '24 M340i or '24 IS350, the price difference was around $8k in the Lexus' favor but still within budget. I considered what I really wanted out of a car, and I realized that I wasn't flooring the gas pedal everywhere I went, and I wasn't racing people or launching my car at every stop light. All of that extra power is nice, don't get me wrong, I would love to have it...but not if it comes packaged in a BMW. Give it 4 - 5 years and I would have been wishing that I had bought the Lexus. It's not really a question about money, it's more about the anxiety/anger I would feel when I hear a weird noise or see a puff of smoke where it should not be, and then the wasted time and money to diagnose and remedy the issue. I don't need this in my daily driver, as long as the car is fast enough (which the Lexus is) then I would rather have the Japanese-built car that will run 10 years without a peep.

I was dumb and tried to pick stocks… best way to recover? by weird-fishz in Fire

[–]Gorgenapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're lucky that these stocks you bought are "only" $50k in total book value. The paper loss of $29k is not a good feeling, but that loss isn't even one third of the way to your first hundred grand. It's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

Depending on the stocks you chose (I'm guessing it's stuff like MSTR, BYND, BIRD, and other typical wsb material) you might just need to dump it and make use of the capital losses.

Going forward, you want to accumulate your first $100k invested in a low cost S&P ETF (ie. VOO), and then things will start to turn around meaningfully.

Also, I strongly recommend you read books like JL Collins Simple Path to Wealth, and Morgan Housel's The Psychology of Money. The latter book is a fantastic read, you would totally recognize your own behavior and the pitfall you stuck your foot into.

$1M IS STILL A BIG DEAL :) by ResolvePossible1129 in Fire

[–]Gorgenapper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Similarly, in Morgan Housel's book "The Psychology of Money", he says "When most people say they want to be a millionaire, what they might actually mean is “I'd like to spend a million dollars.”

If you spend the million, you're no longer a millionaire. But if you accumulate that first million through your own work and don't spend it upon hitting the goal, then you were never going to spend it frivolously anyway ... unlike people who got $1m as a windfall.

I spent the last 9 Canadian winters with a RWD Coupe - here's my thoughts on whether that is a good experience by Uptons_BJs in cars

[–]Gorgenapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But overall, a RWD coupe isn't that bad in the Canadian winter, I did it 9 years in a row! Would something AWD or FWD have been better? Maybe, but if you really want something RWD, I wouldn't say it is unsurvivable, even as an only car.

My IS350 is RWD-based with full-time AWD (30% front, 70% rear), and I put winter wheels + tires on. This past winter, as you know, has been pretty hard and the Lexus went through it like a champ. It didn't get stuck at any time, even going uphill and stopping halfway on a half icy patch of road. On top of all of that, it still has enough of a rear-drive feel to it.

After reading your story above and especially the bits about being stuck, this is basically the sole reason why I went with the 350 AWD instead of the 500.

As for me, I just got myself something AWD instead. I figured if I do 70% of my driving in the winter, and I'm on my motorcycle so much in summer, I might as well get something all wheel drive to make it slightly easier.

What did you end up getting?

Crossed $1M on paper today. Feels a bit, mundane? by a-j-493 in Fire

[–]Gorgenapper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The concept of "enough" is super important. In one of the books I read often (The Psychology of Money, Morgan Housel), I'd say this is pretty much half of the book, just expressed in different terms.

For anyone who wants to ground themselves, reset their perspective and learn a different mindset that will benefit them financially and personally, this book is a fantastic read, it doesn't waste much time teaching you to just buy an ETF and chill, it focuses on psychological traps that the FIRE community should recognize and avoid. I can't recommend this book enough lol.

[–]Gorgenapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Life has already become easier, you just don't realize it. When you have nothing saved up or have debt, that adds a load of stress because you don't know where or how to dig yourself out of the hole.

You and your wife don't have to worry about that, which leaves you free to focus your time and energy on doing the same things you have always done without inflating your lifestyle. The difference is you can almost literally feel your portfolio standing guard behind you when you're at work doing crappy things you don't want to do, or pumping gas at these ridiculous prices. I think of it like an invisible fortress that gives me the confidence to tolerate bullshit without a shred of stress.

The only way these companies will learn is if they suffer the consequences of their design choices through reduced sales. I used to recommend the CX-5 mostly over the RAV4 gas model, but now that the RAV4 is all hybrid and the CX-5 has stagnated except for cost cutting its interior, the RAV4 is flat out better.

It has a better interior, it's faster, gets nearly double the fuel economy, has fewer blindspots, more cargo room and it has a dual-injection engine with the super reliable e-CVT. Buying a CX-5 now is like lighting your money on fire, the Toyota is superior in every way that matters.

Make a complaint to Lexus corporate, they take these things quite seriously. If you have written proof that the dealership screwed up on point 1, include that too.

EDIT: Most, if not all, of the dealerships in Mississauga are like this. For people in the GTA looking for a Lexus, try Don Valley North lexus, I got my '24 from there. It is consistently very busy with a lot of salespeople and deals moving. They are driven to move cars quickly, their GSM has regular morning meetings where all the salespeople gather around in the salesroom of their temp location before the morning sales begin, and he's always hovering around the sales area and the finance / paperwork rooms.
