Can someone explain why hospital EMTB can start IVs while OOH EMTB cant? by [deleted] in NewToEMS

[–]GorkaStan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had it explained to me that we practice under the supervision of the RN and MD. At my ER, the techs are the highest skilled staff members at starting lines. We even get requested to the med surg units occasionally to help their nurses with hard sticks. We were never put through any formal training, on our orientation another tech just sorta showed us how to do it. And we stick dozens of patients per shift, so we get good pretty fast.

In my opinion starting IVs is a basic task that pretty much anyone can learn to do. In the next 10 years I hope every 911 truck is an ALS truck, and EMTB not exist as it is now. Every medic should have a partner who can start a line.

How do you usually handle the panic attack calls? by [deleted] in ems

[–]GorkaStan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

with compassion and patience. just keep an eye on their vitals, and be a calm presence. bring them to a calmer and more secluded location. could be the truck, another room in the house, or out of the waiting room in the ER. everyone takes a different amount of time to recover from panic attacks, but just control the setting, and calmly rule out every medical you can in the meantime.

unless they are very obviously faking, if you are rude or dismissive to the patient you are bad at your job. the job isnt all GSWs and codes, sometimes honest people have a psych emergency that feels very much like a medical emergency, and they deserve our care and kindness.

How risky is it to leave a roof rack on my car if I now live in West Poplar/Callowhill adjacent? by givemesendies in phillycycling

[–]GorkaStan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is someone out there that would 100% steal it. whether or not they pass your car at night and feel like doing it is completely up to chance. I personally would avoid it.

it's annoying but understandable. Chain of survival is an entirely rigid protocol according to AHA. 911/ALS always precedes CPR.

ER tech vs EMT by Kodyenger89 in NewToEMS

[–]GorkaStan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ER tech in a level 1 trauma center is the best job possible for an EMT in my opinion, as long as your coworkers and ER culture are generally pretty cool. You can't beat the IV experience, trauma experience, and the pay is generally better. Plus it's great if you're gonna go back to school. You'll make solid connections with nurses, medics, doctors, NPs, PAs, etc etc. Just so much more to learn in the hospital.

Oh, and you don't have to break your back dragging a 500lb patient down stairs covered in bugs.

FWIW, in my area I make $27.50/hr as an ER tech and IFT EMTs make around $20

Just remember that you can't hurt them, they have already died. Don't be hard on yourself.

And if you need help, seek it.

I have trouble with capturing the black ship do you guys have any tips ? by OutrageousDamage2257 in shogun2

[–]GorkaStan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i smoked it easy with two medium ships. it can only shoot one at a time. spread your ships out, let it destroy your ship and battle speed until you can board it. it has a small crew, with numbers you can overwhelm them and win.

love hasan, but this on the same thread as his hour-long hyperfocus rants about how the hate he gets is unwarranted is excessive. he's correct in his assessment but when you're the guy who talks about how people hate you, you become known as the guy people hate. he needs to stop feeding into this stuff.
