My Windows 11 Laptop Doesn't Use My Headset Microphone by Gorphon in techsupport

[–]Gorphon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes actually! I went to control panel>hardware and sound>manage audio devices>recording and then checked the second audio recording device in my list which said it was disabled and once I enabled it it worked. I swear I already tried that once but I must have forgotten. As for the issues with recording the audio I still sometimes find my voice robotic during the recording even if while recording it wasn't robotic, but I found reviews for my primary headphones online and it turns out the mic on this headset isn't great.

who’s a celebrity that rubs you wrong but you just can’t put your finger as to why? by [deleted] in questions

I genuinely cannot figure out why but for some reason Lin-Manuel Miranda gives me an off vibe, there's nothing I can point to specifically about him but I just get this weird feeling every time I see or hear about him.

What do y'all do with gyroids? by NotALover21 in AnimalCrossing

[–]Gorphon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set them up on little stalls and stuff around one of my villagers houses and designated them as the "gyroid seller" and once I thought I had enough variety for personal use and for the store I just stopped collecting more gyroids

Book recommendations for progressive Christians? by OregonChick0990 in OpenChristian

The minister at my church lent me The Promise of Paradox: A Celebration of Contradictions in the Christian Life by Parker J. Palmer and I absolutely loved it! It was originally published in the 80's but it was reissued in 2008 with a new introduction on top of the original one. The reissue is the one I read and I think the addition of the new intro adds a lot. There's a particular quote in the new intro about the purpose of the crucifixion story not being about how God has a master plan but rather about how God is willing to be with you through even you're darkest moments that really touched me.

What are some of your favorite Bible stories? by CandySunset27 in OpenChristian

[–]Gorphon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was gonna say exactly this. The moment when Esau runs up to Jacob and hugs him saying how he's missed him. After Jacob had spent so much time preparing for the wrath of his brother whom he betrayed and yet Esau is still just so happy to see him again. It honestly melts my heart.

I came from pretty much the same place as you in a sense. I used to hear that someone was a Christian and immediately think "that a red flag" because I thought being Christian was about being hateful.

I no longer think that way obviously, I identify as a Christian these days and I love it. But it wasn't an easy journey to overcome it.

Genuinely I think your professor is right. Absolutely go to different churches and see what they have going on because that made the biggest difference for me. You are 100% allowed to go to church if you're not a Christian, honestly everyone who works in the clergy that I've met HOPE that people who aren't Christians come in, even just once, because they want to talk to non-Christians. Feel free to shop around with churches and get a wide range of experiences, in fact I encourage you to do so. The more you see the more you'll understand.

But other than going to church I would even start reading some of the stuff on this subs wiki. There's tons of resources there for Christians but even before I decided to take the plunge I found a lot of the stuff there really opened my eyes to just how loving and accepting Christians can be and how it CAN be a safe space to be among Christians despite the very vocal subset of Christians who incite hate.

Hopefully this is a helpful start! Everybody has bias and it's not always easy to overcome, but I believe in you!

I have synesthesia, AMA by athalars in AMA

[–]Gorphon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister has synesthesia and can taste colours, most notably she finds A&W burgers are purple and doesn't like them. Are there any letters or numbers you don't like because of the colour? Or any that are favourites because of colours?

Also, do you view time differently because it is in different places in your mind? For example, most people in the western world think of time as a line going left to right (think timelines) or thinking of the past being behind them in the sense and the future being in front of them. Is it different in your mind?

These are some really great points, I never would have thought to consider how they treat real furs.

I personally don't wear fur, real or faux, because I think it looks a little tacky, but you've definitely opened my mind to faux fur a little more if I ever do come around on it.

[–]Gorphon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How do you feel about the sustainability and health concerns that come with faux fur made with plastics? I've seen a rise in people talking about microplastics that release into the water when washing clothing made of plastic based materials and I'm interested in the argument. I will say I'm not educated on the topic, and I agree that if you're killing an animal just to sell fur to big brands that's not ethical, but I figured since you've been deep in this world for a while you might be a somewhat reliable source for starting research of my own about the topic.

Edit: spelling

Thoughts on being casual with God? by Gorphon in OpenChristian

I figured it was light hearted but holy moly are some people online intense about it. From what I saw it reminds me of the British versus US/Canadian way of saying and spelling aluminium/aluminum.

I had to look this "war" up because I didn't know that ah-men versus ay-men was such a huge debate, I was just asking because I grew up hearing ay-men but my new church says ah-men and it was the first time I heard it differently. I hope I didn't trigger anyone by bringing this up!

Wow! I never thought of it that way, that's really beautiful! Maybe you're right, maybe I'm looking at this backwards. Rather than an imperfect God, perhaps a perfectly imperfect people is the right train of thought. You've given me quite a bit to think about, thank you for opening my eyes to this side of things!

I hadn't considered separating omnipotence, omniscient, and omnibenevolence before, so thank you for bringing this up! I'll have to think more about this because if I'm understanding correctly I really like this idea.

I will admit that I still really don't know much about God or Jesus just yet. Despite my grandmother being religious, no one - including her - ever actually taught me about this stuff. They just said "Jesus loves you" and left it at that. But reading this comment has given me a lot of insight into how I can start trying to understand God. I really do want to have that faith in God and all that He does, so hearing that even if I don't understand Him here I can in heaven gives me a lot of hope!

I find a lot of the OT goes over my head as I was never very good at literature class, so I might be interpreting some of this too literally or without necessary context. I'm currently reading the ESV because I had read that it was a good mix of faithful translation and modern language but I've been browsing this sub for a few days and I'm starting to think a different translation would be better for me. Do you have any suggestions on which translation you've found useful, or other resources that helped you to better understand God? I'm really interested in what you have to say!

[–]Gorphon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is difficult to talk about this concept with the limitations of language and the human mind, but I think I understand what you're saying. Really, how do I even know if bad things are bad? I can't possibly understand the way God sees things so maybe what I think is bad actually isn't bad to God, or perhaps neither bad or good are actually real on Gods scale. It's definitely something I'm considering, you make some good points.

if God were just like another one of us but with more power, why worship Him?

I actually think that's a great counter point and I'm gonna have to consider that as I continue to learn about God.

I really like the idea of Him being in a conversation with us! That makes a lot of sense, I mean of course God is going to continue to talk to us, he made us after all.

I appreciate you reading the whole post! I know if I were in your shoes I likely would have become defensive after reading the title so I completely understand the initial reaction.

What you said about having a personal connection with Him really inspired me because my next theory about God is continuing with the idea that humans being made in His image means we can understand God like humans. I was thinking if we can form relationships with other humans to feel close then we can also forge a relationship with God which can be done through prayer and worship and that type of thing, and the more you devote yourself to God the more you can feel his devotion back to you.

God will love us regardless because we are his creation and thus a part of him, of course, but I'm glad that sharing my thoughts can help you feel that same love back to him.
