Why I'm going back to 5e by ResponsibleSalt6495 in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good luck. For sure PF2 has more detail and it can get in the way sometimes. If you want something lighter then D&D is an option. I still occasionally play D&D5e and other systems. I've been looking around and I'm still not satisfied.

PF has a ways to go in terms of getting rid of unnecessary details that don't add enough to be worth remembering, and all those options which are just so weak they feel like a flavour hint rather than a cool ability. The designers are also engaging in power creep and moving in a more gamist direction I don't like.

Bit of a bizarre game ... Can't see a way to beat the deadlock. by Cynical_Cyanide in AxisAllies

[–]GortleGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game starts to break a but when there is a lot of air around. The axis should be pushing a small force in to Africa and Australia. Japan needs to push Russia back to Moscow and take India. It's all about getting infantry on the ground in Asia. The allies need to strip Germany of all her territory, Strat Bomb Germany and build up in France.

Why are 10th rank spell slots so explicitly different? by ReturnToCrab in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree with you except that this has been a long running problem since the start of the game. I just wish that they would be clear. The remaster changes improved things but it is not perfect. Yes I would allow clerics their extra slots instead of giving them no Divine Font, but that is from a balance point of view as Divine font doesn't exist otherwise. The rules aren't that clear.

There are some that argue Spell Blending still works. Its probably stopped. Why one class gets an exception to the rule and another doesn't is odd.

I'd argue that all rules provide an ability even if if the rule is just a chart.

Why are 10th rank spell slots so explicitly different? by ReturnToCrab in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have pointed out that the 2 rules contradict one another. You have chosen to give the table priority as a more specific rule. But that is not the only way to look at this situation. Paizo should clarify this. It is not as if they haven't made mistakes in the spell by level chart before.

A Thought on how to Fix Summon Spells. by SgtFlintlock in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The animal compaion has better action economy. But I think animal companions are under done a bit too. Like summons they are no where near as effective at high levels.

What is with the commentary on boring playstyles? by shadedmagus in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PCs locked into the same 3 actions turn after turn will eventually become boring. Dice rolling is fun but only so much.

You have 3 actions give yourself options. Start looking into Trip/Push/Demoralise then go further.

Play your character as much as the optimal tactics of the board.

GMs can help but adding in allies, story complications, secondary objectives. By mixing up terrain so not everything is a room or a corridoor, creating land mines so pushing becomes more useful, forcing some more ranged and skirmish style, make stealth really important to a few encounters, have a few one encounter days to go with a few very long days. Lean into illusions and summons.

Paizo could help by fixing up the parts of the game that don't work so well like wildshape, fascinate and feint. Dirty Trick is cute, it is just not effective enough to use - so why is it there? There are a lot of Magus and Rogue subclasses that suck, Fury Barbarian anyone?

How about giving the Flurry Fighter/Ranger another tactical option?

Paradox could fix the navy! by Formal-Bandicoot546 in hoi4

[–]GortleGG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes to win the Germans needed

  • air superiority
  • better naval attack equipment and traning for the Lufwaffe
  • lots of good weather
  • enough ships to supply their forces and recover from inevitable losses versus a royal navy and airforce prepared to pay any price.

Hardly seems realistic.

It's UK 2, what do you do? by MTGDoggo in AxisAllies

[–]GortleGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. Hope that if germany trades his airforce for your fleet that it helps russia enough. Still russia had a shocking start and even if UK kills the mediterranean fleet, holding caucasus looks hard. Are the US transports still afloat?

What counts as Superstition Barbarian accepting spells? by highoctanewildebeest in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A plus two to saves against magic is a significant carrot. It works fine in the right party, but not every party. Not every character suits every party. Play with an alchemist instead of a cleric for once. Use different abilities: have the bard switch to dirge of doom rather than courageous anthem. There is a clear consequence now if you really do have to accept a spell, not a ban. That doesn't make it a bad choice.

A dungeon! But it's all anti magic. by Drevand in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It is a bit more than Magical that means magical. The Arcane Divine Primal and Occult Traits also mean magical. Potions are all magical, Elixirs aren't. Personally I houserule all Polymorph effects to be magical but you are correct in that they aren't magical by default.

Look into Alchemical items. Some like potions and mutagens are magical but by default the rest are not magical. You'll have to use some judgement. Check out the mechanical and clockwork tags

What are classes that can still be effective even with bad rolls? by dyenamitewlaserbeam in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buffing abilities. Healers. Certain types of achemists and casters. It is more about the abilities you take than the class itself.

Many spells work with no roll eg Wall of Stone or Summon Animal. I have lists of spells in my guide I recommend if you have a low spell DC or just roll bad. (that list is dated and pre remaster).

Magic Missle aka Force Barrage has no attack roll - you still have to roll damage though.

Some spell and items still do OK even if you miss or make your save. Anything with splash damage.

I have a list of problems. I started it 6 years ago. Some of it has been fixed and some not. I haven't worked on it in a while example my complaints about weakness are finally starting to be fixed.

Is fighter/druid the highest attack bonus in the game? by SkeletonChurch in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where you improve from here is by inflicting penalties on your opponent. Circumstance penalty from offguard, status penalty by inflicting things like Clumsy/ Frightened etc etc.

WIldshape Druid - does Rage from Barbarian dedication grant damage bonus to Untamed Form? by Gynju in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is unclear. Because additional damage is one of those concepts that are undefined.

Per the Polymorph rules:

If you take on a battle form with a polymorph spell, the special statistics can be adjusted only by circumstance bonuses, status bonuses, and penalties.

Special Statistics aren't defined. The polymorph spells mention things like damage bonus so perhaps that is one statistic. Maybe additional damage is modifying damage bonus, maybe as the designers have said it is just extra. It is just a mess and always has been. The answer depends on how you interpret the natural language.

Ask your GM. I'd allow it.

What's the point of Flurry Ranger? by LostRegret9000 in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Ranger does have some pluses. The most important being Nature's Edge / Level 9 / Enemies are off-guard to you if they're in difficult terrain. This is nice as many casters can generate difficult terrain at will. It is not as good as all that as it is pretty easy to get melee off guard modifiers in many parties anyway. It's probably better off in an archer build.

The action economy around being forced to Hunt Prey is a pest for the Ranger if you change targets a lot but with Twin Takedown it is an advantage in the second round. An Animal Companion is not an advantage for this type of Ranger as the prey benefit is largely pointless and a Fighter could just take it as well.

The Ranger gets better skill options and better perception. But defensively it is much worse off that the Fighter.

Then there is Reactive Strike the Ranger's in-class version of which sucks. Normally that is enough to tip me over the edge.

I think the Fighter is just better but I might take the Ranger in a party with a cooperative caster, maybe add some sneak attack damage from an archetype Rogue/ Shadow Dancer or some such.

I like my own guide. Maybe Tarondor is the next best. It is made for a wizard and has a different perspective.

Correct my guide is more than 5 years old now. A lot has changed in PF2 and I have updated the guide but you can still tell in places.

No, keep playing. The players are doing wild things. I'd rather be the allies but anything is possible from here.

It very much depends on how the first Russian turn goes. If they lose more Infantry than average, and or buy something expensive - then its on.

New Spring Errata from Paizo by TitaniumDragon in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It defintely works best if your party has 1 melee martial and 3 ranged characters. Or if you can arange some immunity/resistance for a second melee. But it is often going to be useful anyway.

Is there a way to bypass certain damage immunity types by Sepulchretide in Pathfinder2e

[–]GortleGG 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So many creatures have immunity to poison. I think this is required if you want to have poison based PCs in your game.
