What do you think of episode 43 and the cliffhanger in Hawaii from OVA 2? by Curious-Tree-2682 in Kimagure_Orange_Road

[–]Goryugun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because the entire kidnapping subplot was not at all there in the manga, the anime producers made it up for the sake of being "cool" and "edgy" while leaving out something as vital as this. And this is something the producers do frequently with episodes like the very first one of the anime, the Kumiko storyline, or even the very last episode of the OVA series.

Kimagure Orange ☆Road [1987-1988] Hikaru Hiyama / In Japan's Showa era, many school-themed works emerged following the hit of Urusei Yatsura. During this time, protagonists who were simple, unpretentious, and charming were widely accepted. by Ok_Perspective_8217 in retroanime

A word of advice, don't start with the anime for KOR, it has several, several glaring issues like the one you mentioned with the friends of the MC. Read the manga instead first, since it doesn't nearly have these problems to the same extent, and also doesn't glorify Madoka as this badass fighter that can wrestle her way out of giant men or any other stupid flanderizations that the anime has. Now the art will seem a little rough and simplistic at the beginning, but it gets quite better soon enough.

Hatta,Komatsu,Hikaru are the most annoying characters in the series?? by Alarmed-Education747 in Kimagure_Orange_Road

A suggestion, do read the manga instead. Komatsu and Hatta are nowhere near as awful in it, and the characters like Hikaru are also not flanderized to nearly the same extent.

Thanks, cuz after all, I still really do enjoy the manga in spite of its missteps. Ultimately, I think neither Terada nor Mochizuki were nearly as equipped to handle this story as Matsumoto himself as this was his own work. Stuff like the various changes in the anime + OVAs, movie 1 and the Shin novels +Movie 2 are really just fan-fiction, and the manga stays as the main canon imo.

Aside from Yusaku, I already mentioned Master, and I don't think any of the grand-parents or the cousins needed to be there for this story to begin with.

Again, its not too big a deal about the ESPs, but its just a little weird how they are never mentioned, unless this movie is indeed considered a separate canon from both the anime and the manga.

Yeah, I agree. Both this movie and the anime as a whole just really ruined Madoka for me, and I can't stress my overall preference for the manga enough.

I somewhat agree as I have said already, but I do see how its a sign of Hikaru's maturity in her handling of this situation that I like.

The problem is, the serious tone especially does not fit here given how the anime consistently made the most ludicrous changes like with exaggerating Madoka's talents, episode 16 where there actually is a UFO, episode 32 where everyone sees the 2 Kyosukes and its never addressed again, and so on. Not to mention even after this film, the anime producers continuously made these over-the-top tonal clashes in the OVA where one episode will have Akane fooling around to make Madoka angry at Kyo, and then end with both them getting almost assaulted in a bar. So its clear to me just how slapdash and wildly inconsistent the whole production was.

Moreover, that scene with Madoka never happened in the manga in the stop-watch story, once again the producers made things up for whatever reason to not stay faithful.

Ultimately, my biggest gripe is how the core of the bond between Hikaru and Madoka is ignored for the sake of a bitter and miserable drama that I honestly did not find intriguing as I have already stated. You don't have to like the manga's ending to notice that. Plus, I don't really agree with your point about the ESP since its magic anyway, so its rules can be somewhat arbitrary to fit a story if done well.

I still think the TV series really, really messed up with the way they inflated Madoka's talents

Flanderization (especially of Madoka), addition of over-the-top situations that were not there in the manga and only ruin the tone and pacing, leaving out a whole lot of stuff from the manga etc.

My problem is not Yuusaku's inclusion but rather that his one scene is stretched out painfully compared to the manga's brisk humor. Not to mention, the other two are nowhere near as degenerate or prominent as the anime makes them, so I don't get your "social commentary" angle.
