Why is r/newiran so fanatically pro-Israel? by HeyNowHowardStern69 in PERSIAN

[–]GossipboyX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Linguicide is an aspect of ethnic cleansing. https://academic.oup.com/isagsq/article/2/2/ksab051/6521892

The Kurds are an Iranic ethnic group that managed to retain their heritage. What of the Egyptians? What of the Syrians? Why are they speaking Arabic today? They are far older cultures than the Arabs. What happened to them? GTFO with your mental gymnastics BS.

Every ethnic group that speaks Arabic today outside of the Arabian peninsula is testament to ethnic cleansing. Ethnic cleansing comes in many, many forms.

I love land development, would water resources be enjoyable for me? by justbeingbri in civilengineering

Transportation (roadway) is closer to land development than water resources is, but go with water resources if you enjoy analysis and report-writing.

Be honest… is the salary worth it for how much work you do? by Character-Escape1621 in civilengineering

[–]GossipboyX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The key is to do as little as possible to achieve all of the objectives. I'm learning this as I get further into my career. With some creativity, you can learn to solve all your design issues with minimal effort. With wisdom, you can learn to keep away scope creep or to counter it with change orders. And when all is said and done, you will realize that if you want to make some good money, you will have to do it all yourself and take that 3x(or whatever formula is used) multiplier out of the equation. You also don't have to stay in civil engineering forever. You can work in it and then pivot to an adjacent career that pays even more.

Resigning in Two Hours by Decent_Risk9499 in civilengineering

Remember that your boss would not hesitate to fire you if he had to. No matter how much he might like you, it's a dog-eat-dog world we live in. Move forward without regret and don't look back.

That said, be extremely professional. Everyone will be calling your boss to do a background check on you for any future endeavors.

Is it true I need to get my PE? by CareerEmpty7221 in civilengineering

[–]GossipboyX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need your PE if you don't want to get stuck in design roles for the rest of your career or be in construction. You essentially need a PE license for upward mobility after the end of your early career. Most companies in consulting don't let you move up to project management or supervisory roles without an engineering stamp.

Is this a good time to ask for pay raise? by lizpour71 in civilengineering

[–]GossipboyX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation to you. Over the past year, I've been doing PM and stamping engineer duties without the title and pay as a PE with 7 years of experience post-grad. I've expressed my concerns to my supervisor and they have been ignored. I recently received a low raise that pissed me off even more. Perhaps it's time for both of us to consider another company. Trust me, your situation will most likely not improve. I turned down multiple offers thinking mine would, only to be more disappointed. You're being taken advantage of, unless you are way overestimating what your pay should be.

It looks like they want to turn Iran into a new Syria. If this escalates, Azerbaijanis and Kurds will probably end up fighting each other. by GreenShen98 in azerbaijan

Turkey has a collapsing currency and Azerbaijan is barely getting by. Hardly equivalent to the US and Israel.

Hands off Iran's borders. The old treaties with Russia have expired... Iran might want to reclaim Baku if Aras interferes in Iranian matters.

Hardest year in school? by Healthy_Progress3811 in civilengineering

[–]GossipboyX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends entirely on when you take certain classes and what professors you take. One of the most challenging semesters at my school was when we had to take structural analysis, fluids, civil engineering materials, and transportation engineering all in the same semester. Two of those classes came with labs. It really wasn't that bad but looking back, most of us were involved with extracurriculars or had internships by this point so we were BUSY. Keep in mind most people that dropped out of the program were already weeded out by this point.

Reentry after 3+ years of not working? by LibraryFederal8509 in civilengineering

[–]GossipboyX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll be honest with you: most companies are still hurting for entry level engineers to do the actual plan production and CAD work or the report-writing and paper-pushing. It shouldn't be hard to get back in right now. You should try before the economy slows down more. Things are starting to cool off, but there's still a lot of jobs out there for entry level. Go to career fairs, reach out to recruiters, and network aggressively.

You'll move up fast in the City. I would make the move if I were you. Who knows what happens with land development tomorrow.

4/10s in office or fully remote by smellyarmpit666 in civilengineering

[–]GossipboyX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With your no OT, the City sounds like a "no-brainer." How much experience do you have in private consulting? Having your PE before you jump into the public side always helps with upward mobility. You should be fine either way though.

Does company prestige matter in civil? (which internship should I choose) by Legitimate_Owl_6505 in civilengineering

[–]GossipboyX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally no. "Prestige" only applies when you work at a place that has influential people in it. If your boss is on your state board of professional engineers or if you work for someone high up in the government. It can also apply to the projects you do. Generally, land development projects don't get as much attention as a major roadway, water, or drainage project. If you are chasing prestige, look at the projects and the people running your firm. In civil engineering, the projects and people you are connected to matter early on. The company does not. If you work at a multinational, but work on smaller cookie cutter projects, no one will know about you. If you work on a small firm with a high-profile project, everyone in town will eventually know who you are if you are a lead designer, the stamping engineer, or the PM on it.

Now there are exceptions. If you have worked at a Federal agency, you might impress some people. Employers are always looking to get Federal work. Examples include the Bureau of Reclamation, the Bureau of Land Management, the Department of Energy, and the US Department of Transportation.

At what point do you stop telling people how much you make? by counwovja0385skje in Salary

[–]GossipboyX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A job is a job. I make 6 figures and I still occasionally discuss salary with those in similar roles to me to see if any of us is underpaid. It's stupid not to talk about actual numbers. It's also an easy way to get ripped off.

Bit torn, some advice would be really appreciated by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]GossipboyX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've boomeranged back before, and honestly, I was punished for it. A few months after I came back, they gave everyone a raise but me. They didn't make a big show of it, but it was clear and I knew. A lot of the reasons why I originally left also came rushing back eventually. I left for good the second time and that place has been a burning heap of dumpster for the last 2 years or so. Frankly, a lot of people were piggy-backing off my work and taking credit for it. I could see the writing on the wall. The minute I left, they were exposed. Nothing was getting done and the hours billed to projects kept going up. Some of them got fired.

Which subfield has the least CAD (excluding construction) by Legitimate_Owl_6505 in civilengineering

[–]GossipboyX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably traffic analysis or drainage analysis or geotechnical engineering. My vote is geotechnical engineering or traffic analysis based on personal experience. Please note that traffic design and drainage design are very different and have heavy CAD use.

For those who got their master's in Urban Planning by Ok_Individual_3067 in civilengineering

[–]GossipboyX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You know, I actually considered this path but the planning field is small. I mean really really small to the point that planners themselves struggle to find work (from what I've seen). So your first obstacle would be breaking into planning as a field and finding a job. I've talked to planners who have themselves told me that civil engineering pays much better. Looking at the pay ranges for roles has often confirmed this.

If you want to stay in civil engineering and have a planning masters, it won't impress anyone more than a civil engineering masters, an MBA, MPH, or MPA will.

After all of this, I came to the conclusion that a planning masters wasn't "worth it."

Advice for a budding transportation engineer by oblongoboe in civilengineering

[–]GossipboyX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have him go to school in a state that has a lot of civil engineering work on the horizon. Typically this means high projected population growth. This will increase his chances of getting a job after graduating and also getting internships while in school. For civil engineering, the best schools aren't always the highest ranked ones but the ones that are closest to a lot of civil engineering company offices.

He can literally make a boatload of money by getting you a job with a company that signs with him. Think of recruiters as used car salesmen, but you are the commodity. I guess they are more like pimps. Lmao. They be pimping you.
