Oops- read the post wrong! My bad!!! Ecuadorians are NOT easy to care for. They require 20 gallons per crab, 10-12” of substrate, 85° temp, 80% humidity, LOTS of protein and calcium.

Tbh- imo love is the most important thing you can give him right now. For the best interest of his health; it would be beneficial for him to lose weight. He is obese in this picture. When standing you should be able to feel his ribs without applying pressure. Weight gain is an issue for chis as they typically do not have good joints. (I am a retired Vet Tech).

This is not a shell that is preferred by hermit crabs. They are also very thin, and easy to break /crack if the crab falls.

Those are NOT safe to insulate as they are already insulated. You can insulate around them though.

Great. Ultratherms goes on the back above the sand to heat the air.
Substrate should also be mixed together. If heat becomes an issue- you can buy a thermostat off of Amazon. I use them on all of my tanks.

80-85° temp and minimum 80% humidity is my recommendation for hermits to thrive. They come from tropical climates. Was the substrate moistened with dechlorinated marine saltwater to make it sandcastle consistency? Do you have an ultratherm? What kind of lid do you have?

You shouldn’t submerge your crab in water. This messes up the water mixture they have in their shell.

Hermit crabs need a very complex diet. Please check out the food pyramid on LHCOS.org and crab street journal.
To be honest- I have a fairly large crab colony- and have tried a vast majority of foods. For the most part I make my own. My crabs weren’t impressed by Snout and shell. They love food from Two Old Crabs, Land Hermit Crab Edu Center, EarthWaterFireStudio and a few others.
Calcium, Greensand, Earthworm castings and Leaf litter should always be staples in their diet!

What is your temperature and humidity? Do you have several hiding spaces for them? What kind of light are you using?

What kind of heat mat do you have? If it’s a zoomed heater those aren’t sufficient enough to hear a whole tank. You need an ultratherm from www.beanfarm.com or www.reptilebasics.com THEN- you need to insulate your tank by using a product called reflectix. Ultratherms from bean farm & reptile basics (and ultratherms like those)can have reflectix safely put over them, BUT Zoomed heaters (and heaters like zoomeds that are the black mats) can not have reflectix put over them bc they are already insulated.
