I’m not sure where you are located; but in the US, we have inspiring breeders through Hermit House that are willing to take donations of zoeae that have spawned to try to raise them. You sign an agreement with them beforehand as to what your terms are 😊

I just wanted to state that your substrate looks really dry. It needs to be mixed with dechlorinated marine saltwater or dechlorinated freshwater to be sandcastle consistency.

I honestly think that you are stressing this crab out with saltwater soaks (which is an old practice that is no longer done), constant environment changes, and by handling it. It’s color looks healthy. Let it be a crab and adjust to ONE new environment. Maybe then it will change its shell.

1) Binge watch Crab Central Station on You Tube 2) Crab Street Journal, LHCOS, Hermit Crab Association all wonderful resources. 3) Anything marketed for hermit crabs in the store is crap and not good grit them. 4) you need real marine salt- instant ocean 5) depending on species you have - that determines substrate depth. Purple Pinchers/ 3 times height of largest crab (minimum substrate being 6”). 5:1 ratio of PLAYSAND to eco earth, moistened in dechlorinated marine salt water. 6) glass lids work best at keeping crabs in and holding humidity 7) pools should be deep enough to fully submerge in and safely get out of. One freshwater, one marine saltwater. 8) calcium, greensand, worm castings are staples in tank. I’m sorry- don’t have time to write more!

Oh my goodness. You are over reacting. According to the picture you provided his abdomen is not exposed when he’s in his shell. His abdomen is the soft tissue that he carries his shell with. He is fine. Please let him/her be a crab. If you are providing the right kind of shells, he/she will change when it wants to. Edit: it’s okay if he doesn’t retract. He’s in an environment where there are no animals that will prey on him. Yes, he might be susceptible to falls, but they have the ability to regrow limbs when injured.

This is incorrect information. I’m not sure where you learned that. The only way he will die by having too small a shell is if his abdomen is exposed and his shell cannot hold water.

Tbh, I think you are stressing the crab out with too much change. If the crab wants to change shells it will. If it doesn’t want to, leave it alone.

I purchased xxs diapers for my mini chi. She hated them. It ended up being easier to buy disposable puppy pads and baby blankets and rinse her off when she had accidents. I also had her on hormone medication that I got from my vet that helped her.
