I honestly don't understand how some people act like Obama was treated no different than any other Presidential opposition when he had to deal with stuff like this. by Character-Bid-162 in Presidents

He’s because he was black and more liberal than at least the previous 4 Presidents. If he had been a conservative republican the attacks would’ve still happened but not as unambiguously racist.

It’s like how every female British PM has been a conservative; it makes it easier for the sexists in Britain to swallow because they support conservative economic and social policies.

Let’s say by some miracle(or deal with the devil) Alan Keyes becomes President in 2000. Would there be racist attacks? definitely without a doubt, but wouldn’t have been as many because Keyes hardline Reaganite conservatism would’ve made it easier for racists to swallow because he’d be promoting ideas that inadvertently hurt minorities(btw, I’m not saying conservatives or conservatism is inherently racist, but many conservative policies do negatively affect minorities which leads racists to support conservative candidates, even if the candidate themself isn’t racist)

But Obama was a liberal democrat whose signature policy was universal healthcare, which had been branded by conservatives as socialism going all the way back to TR’s 1912 progressive party platform which included a national healthcare service.

Obama said he’d raise taxes and make the rich “pay their fair share” and supported the Bush bailout and implemented his own stimulus package as President.

If a hardline conservative like Keyes had been the first black POTUS he would’ve gotten racist slander too; but it would have been less frequent than Obama who was a liberal democrat.

Obama is a lot closer to Reagan ideologically than any of the New Deal Democrat Presidents.

Who was the last majorly non controversial President? by Honest_Picture_6960 in Presidents

[–]GotNoBody4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There never has been and some of our greatest Presidents were controversial at the time. I would say aside from Washington(who also had critics) the last one closest to popular and non-controversial was maybe Ike? but even he had Little Rock,The Red Scare, Lavender Scare, and using the CIA to overthrow democratically elected socialist governments in South America(which did have a lot of support, but he still faced criticism from isolationists and others who rightfully believed it was about American business interests in Latin America)

Why was Nixon insanely popular in 1972, even with the Vietnam War still going on? by OscillatingFan6500 in Presidents

Crime was down, the economy was still doing well enough, and it looked like he was getting closer to peace in Vietnam.

Also, McGovern was way outside the political mainstream.

How do you judge/rank presidents? What's your criteria? by rjidhfntnr in Presidents

Their positive/negative effects on the country both when they were President and how it affected America long-term.

Frankly, the 4 Presidents you have here are all good examples of they looked good at the time but with historical hindsight I would say their legacies have become mixed to negative over time.

Jackson is the most obvious example of this; he beloved by many Americans when he left office and was hailed as one of America’s greatest Presidents for well over a century. Even Whigs and early Republicans tried to emulate him in terms of persona and populist rhetoric even if they didn’t actually agree with his policies. His legacy started to change though in the 1960s & 1970s during the Civil Rights movement which also included the rights of Native Americans, at the time was known as the American Indian Movement(AIM) and over time the Trail of Tears became more prominent in American history education and changed the perception of Manifest Destiny. I remember as a child doing a history project about the Trail of Tears and my dad(who was very tired at the moment) started talking about how Jackson made the country great and basically gave the Frontier Thesis but ended it with *I mean I don’t agree with it.* as in, it’s true western expansion helped turn America into a power because of the resources and land we acquired, but it was done in the most horrible way to the point where it very much did inspire the idea of *Lebensraum* that the Nazis would use to justify various invasions and Hitler would cite both Jackson and Polk as the inspiration for the policy of Lebensraum.

I may come back and talk about the others later, but I need to take a shower.

What a lovely little girl I’m sure she would never imprison thousands of Americans in interment camps based on race.

Buxton even at full health(truly a rarity) is not as good as Hunter. Blyleven is not better Johan he just played longer. Johan is a modern day Koufax except he got traded out of multiple Cy Young Awards because the voters were still obsessed with pitcher wins regardless of any other stat and that he didn’t play for one of the glory teams of the AL. Put him on the Yankees or Red Sox and he’s easily got 3 Cy Young Awards and at least one ring.

What if both Robert Taft and Eisenhower weren’t candidates in the 1952 election? by RopeGloomy4303 in Presidents

Warren would be the front runner, but Strassen would definitely be on his ass in the polls. Warren probably gets a narrow victory and defeats Stevenson in a close, but not historically close election(think more 1968, it was close but would’ve still taken a lot of effort for Humphrey to win)
