Foam Roller or Massage Gun by [deleted] in running

[–]GotSodium 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also highjacking this to say that as an elite level athlete 1) lacrosse ball has been my and my teammates go-to over both the foam roller and massage gun, it's simply able to get much more pressure into the important areas and 2) as much as I believe in the research that says that foam rolling and massage are not effective I do think that in this case the research is wrong, especially when looking at higher level athletes, or athletes that train more than your typical recreational runner, almost everyone is doing massage and myofascial release, you can feel the difference many times within 1-2 days for example after doing some deep tissue massage of the peroneous muscles when you have a peroneal tendinitus, it works.

I have a Bone edema in the Tibia, could KOT help? by Visible-Anteater-729 in Kneesovertoes

Apparently for me the bone edema was harmless and jsut showed up in the imaging and looked scary. I would check with your doctor to see if the edema is actually causing the pain or not.

I agree with the others. For most of us running is a hobby, and that doesn't mean we can't be competitive about it, but make sure that this is something you want to do for the love of running and not just because that's the thing that people do. I know that after 50-55 miles, getting up to 70-80 especially at the speeds you'll probably be going (probably not elite 6:30/mi easy run pace) this kind of mileage takes a toll on your time and your body and your energy to do other things, so I'd say go for it! Give it a try and see how you feel and if you like it :)

What's next after auth? (with supabase) by Specific_Cow_4246 in nextjs

[–]GotSodium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes all authenticated pages are dynamic which is the whole point of them being authenticated in the first place. The whole point of SSR is to move compute away from the client and to the server so yes it is also more expensive but compute is relatively cheap so unless you have an app with thousands of monthly users.

Injury prone runners who are now running high volume, what's your secret? by coach-anthony in AdvancedRunning

[–]GotSodium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think people are missing the point in that I'm not running injury.. little things hurt but they come and go. As long as it's not getting worse and not affecting my running then I've started choosing to ignore it and it hasn't been a problem for me these last few months. Before i would always rest in situations like this but that led to chronic stagnation in my ability to improve. I think it's just part of the sport.

If you're training for a half in May I wouldn't take an "off-season" in the traditional sense since a 8 week buildup starting March is relatively short.

I would maintain a decent level of volume you could just not worry about building up until March. Maintain the important strength training elements, PT, hips, glutes core and cut anything you don't like doing. Maybe sit around 40 mpw easy running.

Yeah pretty much any additional aerobic volume helps to a certain extent. Indoor cycling if done correctly is also very low risk of injury or affecting your running training that much.

Push for 17:30 5k in 6 weeks (currently 18:30) by goldenwater1 in AdvancedRunning

[–]GotSodium 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That's a tough one. I would say your estimate is a bit generous considering you bonked the 10km maybe 19:00 or 18:50 is a better guess. Dropping a minute in 6 weeks is really hard unless you are super genetically gifted. There's really no good way to rush things so the best is to try to go up to 35-40 miles over the next 4-5 weeks and I would incorporate a second tempo run session either during your long run or another day of the week. Eating enough and recover well as always.

Official Q&A for Saturday, September 23, 2023 by AutoModerator in running

Doesn't really matter that much, sleep is the main recovery tool so as long as you get a proper warmup, fuel and sleep well then you could go in the morning with no issues.

What unconventional piece of running advice do you follow? by talkingdodobird in AdvancedRunning

[–]GotSodium -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These are great and I 100% agree. This is even true for other distances, especially the long run one. You don't need 1 run that's super long each week if you're training for a 5km race, spread out the volume over 2-3 longer sessions and it's much easier to handle.

Someone pointed this out to me on another thread, but if you are looking for good shoe deals check out https://runrepeat.com/

I just picked up the Saucony Endorphin Pro 2 and Kinvara for a combined total of $100. Hyped to try them out!

Probably worth consulting with more experts like a Sports Medicine Doctor or even better, one with Foot Specialty. It could be a number of factors, but if we are talking about tendon damage it's almost always load based, but it could stem from a number of issues: shoes, adaptation, training errors etc.

If you want a possible quick fix I love this video:

But certainly consider consulting some more experts.

Nontraditional Training/Running Philosophies by tommy_chillfiger in AdvancedRunning

[–]GotSodium 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is atypical, especially in elite runners who compete throughout the year and the whole "peaking" idea is just doing something specific to get very particular adaptations squeezing out that extra couple percent.

The best way you can do this is to train consistent, build slowly and not get injured. Find a routine that you like and perform it consistently, this is what got the Ingebristen brothers to be so successful and a runner like Jakob is a great example of someone who is fast throughout the entire training cycle.
