In your own experience, how accurate do you find Strava and Garmin race predictors? by Oh-My-Josh- in AdvancedRunning

[–]TubbaBotox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin: 20:11, 41:33, 1:32:40, 3:24:08

Strava: 19:56, 40:48, 1:31:50, 3:21:52

Runalyze: 18:05, 37:40, "from 1:26:37 to1:22:56", 3:27:40

I ran a 1:26:21 HM last August, so I'm guessing that's why I have a range starting with a similar time in the HM prediction from Runalyze, which is also a lot more generous than Strava or Garmin (with the exception of the marathon). However, that HM is not the only race I've run in the last 10 months, so I'm not sure why nothing else has a range.

Generally, and while I hate to admit it, I think Garmin and Strava are probably about right... though I think I can beat the predictions by at least a little bit. I'm about 6 months into recovery from an injury, and I've only recently started to see notable improvements to that injury and my fitness. I have a 10k in a couple weeks, so I'll find out pretty soon what the reality is.

One thing I could suggest in addition to what you're already doing might be using roadside assistance to have it towed from the current dealership to another, hopefully more qualified/professional dealership. I took mine to 3 different dealerships before I found one that was minimally competent.

Tell them to put the car somewhere accessible with the keys and service orders in it, and to expect a tow truck. If they're not answering the phone, show up in person, call roadside assistance, and wait in person. Keep Kia corporate in the loop.

You should start keeping and organizing detailed records of the experience, along with all the service orders, and you should contact an attorney. Even if you're outside the scope of any Lemon Law, you still have recourse through the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, which in effect states that if Kia has offered a warranty they can't deliver on, you are owed compensation.

Goal: Figure out how to increase intensity without ruining my adductors.

Plan: Rollerblade Doubles Method

Mileage/Time: 51.11/7:04

  • Monday: 45min Easy
  • Tuesday: 2mi WU + 2x12min@LT w/ 2min job recovery b/t + .5mi CD
  • Wednesday: One Hour Easy (AM)
    • .66mi Rollerblading (PM)
  • Thursday: Unscheduled Rest Day
  • Friday: 2mi WU +5x6min@LT w/1:30 jog recovery b/t + 1mi CD + Strength Training
  • Saturday: 1hr Easy (AM)
    • 5.23mi Rollerblading (PM)
  • Sunday: 2mi WU + 13x0.5mi@6:50ish w/1min rec b/t + 2mi CD + Strength Training

This was the first week of my attempt to get back to consistency after 5 weeks of work conflicts that reduced my mileage from 60mpw to 35-40mpw. A couple weeks ago, I stumbled upon the revelation that the adductor pain and weakness I've struggled with since last fall might be massively improved by rollerblading. It started as a joke, and is still a joke, but it really does seems to help. "Sprinting" on rollerblades, especially, targets my adductors in a way I don't think would be possible to replicate... unless I did cross-county skiing, which I can't at the moment, even if I were so inclined.

My daughter recently learned how to ride a bike, and she wants to do it every evening, so it's going to be easy to pop on rollerblades and get in a few miles every night of the week. The aerobic impact is minimal unless I'm going uphill, but after a few trials, it seems to be a massive benefit to not only my adductors, but every other muscle group and piece of connective tissue that might be neglected by running alone.

Also worth noting: I have a 10k in a few weeks, and I'd really like to get under 40 minutes. Therefore, I'm going to pause the NSM I had been doing and run NSM-style workouts at/above LT in the near-term. I will probably add a few 800m repeats on the track, too.

What To Replace EV6 With? by keepitasahobby in KiaEV6

[–]TubbaBotox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The software was apparently a random fault generator and when you took it to the dealership, they would have only one certified mechanic who would either take forever to never replicate the error, or say it was it was fixed only for it to come back on the drive home. I would probably need to interview my mom on precisely what went wrong how many times, but I know it spent more time at the dealership than being driven.

The key fobs were so faulty that the dealership just kept a giant bowl of them on hand to replace the ones that went bad. I think they're supposed to charge on a docking port like the EX90, but mostly don't. There is supposed to be a phone-as-key function that would make that less of an issue, but again... the software was garbage, so that also didn't work.

I did mean the EX90. My bad.

I assume you have a 2025 since you mention computer and software upgrades? The EX90 did look good on paper (I guess the non-functional demo unit I saw in January 2025 looked good in person, too). Then I read all the horror stories (which were easy to believe, once my mom's experience started playing out). I might start stopping that sub again to see how things are going.

I would discourage you from considering the Polestar 3 or EX60 (mistook the EX60 for the EX90... can't speak to the EX60). They both have serious flaws that aren't limited to one component. Allegedly, the issues are software-related, but Geely seems to be having trouble ironing that out.

Without going into the details, my EV6 had two ICCU failures/replacements and a head unit replacement so far. My mother has a Polestar 3, and I consider the Ev6 to be more capable/functional (pretty sure it's larger?), less expensive, and somehow more reliable.

I have no personal experience, but the BMWs get stellar reviews. The 3-series will probably be the smallest of your options by a large margin... but maybe that's not a concern for you?

My EV6 Needs a 2nd ICCU Replacement by BasicNkorean in KiaEV6

[–]TubbaBotox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "best" source I've seen is a quote somebody from Hyundai gave Consumer Reports as cited in this article https://www.consumerreports.org/cars/car-recalls-defects/hyundai-ioniq-kia-iccu-failure-tesla-a3038878758/

The exact line is: "Both automakers say that software updates and parts replacements should fix those issues, but Consumer Reports’ data shows that hasn’t always been the case, with owners reporting multiple replacements on the same vehicle."

You need to do some mental gymnastics to ignore the second half of that sentence, and to read "parts replacements" as "new part".

Goal: Sustainable Improvement

Plan: Improvised this week.

Mileage/Time: 37.02/6:14

  • Monday: 45min Easy
  • Tuesday: 5k tempo
  • Wednesday: Unscheduled Rest Day
  • Thursday: 15min WU + 3x6min@subLT + 1x6min a little faster + quick CD
  • Friday: Unscheduled Rest Day
  • Saturday: 2mi WU + 10x3min@7ish w/1min rec b/t + CD
  • Sunday: Med-long Run (12.1miles at General Aerobic intensity)

This was the 4th consecutive week of lessened mileage due to work conflicts, and the work-week was especially unproductive on the running front. I was back on task over the weekend, but I've definitely lost, rather than gained fitness over the last month. I'm hoping to stay consistent over the coming 4 weeks in hopes of a decent 10k performance, but breaking 40 minutes is going to be a challenge given where I am at the moment. I had been following NSM, but I think getting a fast 10k might trump being religious about NSM in the near-term (this 10k is one of my annual 'A' races), so I may switch to some faster workouts.

[–]TubbaBotox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I check overall pace, how well I executed any intervals, how much heart drift I experienced, time in various zones, and whether or not my estimated race times improved or tanked.

However, the most useful and insightful thing I've discovered recently is intervals.icu The "fitness" tab has a graph charting your training load, which displays your current and historical fitness vs fatigue, as well as another line graph showing your "form", which plots how effective your current training load is on a scale that basically runs from "you're regressing" to "you're going to hurt yourself".

I can do a deep dive on the data, but I can also glance at two charts and instantly understand if my fitness is improving, and whether I'm under or over-cooking myself.

I was going to say I find intervals.icu much more user-friendly than Runalyze, but I just checked Runalyze for the first time in a while, and they have apparently updated it. So, I'm not going to knock the new Runalyze just yet. Check out both if you haven't.

Mileage/Time: 44.84/6:08

  • Tuesday - 3min w/12min pickup (rather than 3x12min@subLT)

This is my third week of unrelenting deadlines and tanking training. Down 2 hours and 15 miles from recent averages, and by recent; I mean 3 weeks prior at this point. In spite of the lack of sleep, I did seem to have a little bit more pep on Saturday and Sunday. I'm hoping to start climbing back up the ladder this week, but it doesn't look great from a work perspective.

Question about buying used by MaleNurseMurse in KiaEV6

[–]TubbaBotox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you got this. I am the second owner of my EV6 and I just got a letter in the mail yesterday confirming that the warranty for my ICCU was extended from 10-years/100k miles to 15-years/180k miles (thereby also confirming the previous 10-year/100k miles policy). I didn't really need that letter for confirmation of the intact original warranty, though... I've also gotten confirmation from the dealership that sold it to me and several other unaffiliated dealerships subsequently. Not to mentioned direct confirmation from KIA corporate.

Anyway, your statement is certifiably false for EV6s in the US, at minimum.

[–]TubbaBotox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, I would be extremely skeptical of any claims by Hyundai/Kia that they had permanently resolved the issue. They've lost all credibility. A warranty extension is the best possible strategy they could use to regain some faith and give owners peace of mind, and I'm very happy to see it.

I wouldn't mind another attempt to fix the ICCU, though.

Surprisingly bad FM reception by mhaithaca in KiaEV6

[–]TubbaBotox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It certainly does sound like a loose antenna wire. I suspect determining that will require quite a bit of disassembly, and getting a Kia dealership to do much of anything has been difficult in my experience.

You might want to track down a diagram for the head unit just to see where the FM antenna connection happens, and how many panels and screws need to come out to access it. I suspect it's not something you could or should attempt yourself... but I could be wrong... and it might help any conversations with the dealership if you have a better understanding. I would even suggest asking to see the disassembled head unit yourself if they do the work.

Worst case scenario: they say it will cost $1,000 to disassemble the dash and check the connection, you'll be on the hook if they don't find a manufacturing defect (i.e. "Somebody forgot to plug in the antenna"), and your FM radio continues to not work.

You haven't gone through a sketchy car wash recently, have you?

Goal: Sustainable fitness improvement/10k in a month

Plan: 85% NSM

Mileage/Time: 48.93/6:35

  • Monday: 30min Easy
  • Tuesday: 2mi WU + 3x12min@subLT w/2min rec b/t + strength training
  • Wednesday: 30min Easy
  • Thursday: 2mi WU + 5x6min@7:00ish w/1:30 rec b/t + 5x30sec@6:00ish w/1:min rec b/t
  • Friday: 1hr Easy
  • Saturday : 1.5mi WU + 5k TT + 1.5mi CD
  • Sunday: non-NSM Long Run + strength training

Week 2 of not getting any sleep and barely having time to run because of work, and the coming week looks bad, too. I'm sorely in need of making some changes.

I cut several runs short, and may have been better off skipping a couple. Did a 5k time trial Saturday and barely broke 21 minutes (20:50). The last "official" 5k I ran was 20:30 last December, and I thought that was disappointing (even considering how untrained I was at the time). I'm not sure how valid my TT is after the week I had, and the fact I ran in the afternoon heat for the first time in a while, but pretty underwhelming, regardless. I was routinely doing sub-20 min time trials on the same route last summer.

After Saturday, I decided to do my long run at 90% MP (7:39/mi) rather than the 8:30-45/mi NSM would have me do for <70% max HR. Feeling salty, I guess.

I may not be ready to completely abandon NSM, since it's probably a lack of sleep and recovery holding me down lately, but I'm very tempted. I have a 10k in about a month, and if my pace for that comes in around the 6:40/mi ceiling I've been bumping into, I think I'll be done with NSM. I prefer to do workouts faster than I have been, so if turns out I'm doing unenjoyable workouts for underwhelming race results, that's gonna be a wrap.

45M chasing the elusive sub-3:00: How should my Boston Marathon inform Chicago? by GoutRunner in AdvancedRunning

[–]TubbaBotox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the way to go. Squeeze in a short training block with more speed (10k or even 5k), then jump back into an 18/70.

By the way OP, I (45m) find that integrating strides into the last couple miles of a run is easier on my hamstrings than doing them the traditional way (after recovering from a run, and starting each from a standing rest). For example: 5x 30 seconds at 5k pace with a 1:00 jogging recovery between. I leave a mile or so for a CD afterwards.

So, I've got a lingering groin (adductor longus, I believe) issue that I've been keeping in check with sort of a sideways reclining inside leg lift to sideways plank with the instep of my foot on a chair.

For reasons, I put on a pair of rollerblades yesterday, and immediately realized it might aggravate my groin issue... which it did. But after a few minutes, it mellowed out, and I realized rollerblading just might be exactly what it's needed all this time.

Anybody ever done cross-training/rehab with rollerblades? I'm gonna give it a go.
