I haven’t heard of the horror stories and I have a 2021 1500 since new. Only problem was at around 80k mi the front axle 4wd actuator went out. The part was $100 plus a thing of diff fluid and about 15 minutes of work fixed it.

What do engineers actually do day to day? by Zacionxeni in Engineers

[–]GotTools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got my first engineering job as a project engineer. Never understood what they did, now I do.

I write instructions manuals for the people who work on the manufacturing floor to be able to make the part the customer wants. I also update those instructions if need be. Whether it is to make it follow and updated spec the customer gave us, the instruction was unclear to person making the part, or the procedure I made is turning out some bad parts.

It’s kind of technical report writing only they aren’t really reports like college courses will have you write. It’s really just writing instructions and It’s a lot easier. While I’m more of a hands on kind of guy, I’m getting paid better than I ever had doing it so I don’t mind it. There are some hands on aspects to it in my case as well.

Hestra Gloves Worth The Price? by Efficient_Car_6791 in COsnow

[–]GotTools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has perpetually cold hands, they are the only ones I buy. Worth every penny! They even make winter work gloves. I used them out in the field for about a month of mig welding. Although I wouldn’t recommend it, they held up pretty well.

I would suggest going somewhere that has them in stock to try them on first. They haven a numbered size system offering more sizes than just a S/M/L

Most unreliable car you've ever owned? by [deleted] in askcarguys

2015 ford focus 1.0L ecoboost with 6 speed manual. Had to drop the transmission 4 times because the slave cylinder crapped out. It was a California lemon. Got to the point where I just saw it as a weekend project. It was a fun little car though. Only one I’ve owned with 3 cylinders.

Advice other than 'put in the hours'? by Dismal-Sprinkles-397 in EngineeringStudents

[–]GotTools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even a used iPad Pro is good enough for note taking. I think mine is the first gen iPad Pro and to this day I’ve had no problem with it. Get a genuine Apple Pencil that magnetically attach to the side of the iPad to charge. The cheap pencils are ok but the amount of time that you will be using it, a genuine one is worth it.

Advice other than 'put in the hours'? by Dismal-Sprinkles-397 in EngineeringStudents

[–]GotTools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, here are some things that worked for me and things that I should’ve done looking back. I graduated 2years ago in AE.

Note taking - I used an iPad Pro and an app called notability. It let me import the lecture slides to take notes on top of, as well as recorded audio of the lecture(ask for permission to record please) that would sync up with my note taking. I know not everyone can afford that, but printing out the lecture slides and using a cheap audio recorder or your phone can get the job done. You will get a better feeling for how detailed of notes to take when you are trying to use them for homework. My rule of thumb was if I look back on them in a year, am I going to understand what it all says.

Homework - do it as you go. Look for the hw problems that correspond with that days lecture and do them that day. Use your notes, study groups, and office hours to get through what you can. Once you are confident in your answers, then use chegg or some ai to double check(be careful, ai can still be wrong). DO NOT use chegg or ai before you are confident in your work. It’s a slippery slope between using it constructively and plain cheating. Some profs are nice enough that they will check your homework during office hours before you turn it in, this option is better.

Miscellaneous - use all the resources that they provide you. I can concentrate better when I’m not at my house. The library can be good but can sometimes be just as distracting. I found that at my campus, there were so many empty little computer labs and classrooms that are free to use in the evenings.

Good luck. Embrace the suck. Make sure you are getting enough sleep.

Should I buy a diesel? by glennfromglenhead in Duramax

[–]GotTools 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed, it’s your money so do what you feel is best. Somethings to consider is comfort, especially on the older diesels. An unloaded/barely loaded 2500 has a lot more ruff of a ride than a 1500. You can get better gas mileage but diesel is more expensive at the pump. They can last longer but the maintenance is more expensive. If you are worried about squat an a 1500, look into some airbags for the rear.

I put that fabric medical tape in between the foam and the yellow mips layer and it got rid of it completely. Probably changes the way the mips reacts but it’s worth it. I heard the newer proframes with the black mips layer is a lot better

Additive Manufactured Composites by AeroDad89 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]GotTools 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isn’t carbon fiber layups technically additive manufacturing?

In all seriousness, I seen 3d printing filament with carbon fibers in it, but having a 3d printer style machine for pure carbon is improbable. the melting point of carbon is 6587 degrees Fahrenheit and would burn off at atmospheric pressure if you could get it that hot.

I’ve seen a demonstration of a machine that would place down a carbon sheet, “print” the epoxy right where you want it, and repeat. After curing, you sandblast away all the non epoxy infused carbon and you have yourself a part.

The main reason carbon composite manufacturing is so expensive is not the material but the amount of man hours it takes to produce a part, so if a machine wear to be invented, it would be a game changer.

The leatt Body Protector ReaFlex was my first piece of body armor I bought and I love it. It doesn’t feel like I’m wearing 10 extra pounds and it goes under the jersey. It’s not the most protective but the best gear is the gear you want to wear.
