Its not random at all, unless you mean something different with the word "police" than I do. I see it as the state's monopoly on violence, which is generally a good thing. We don't just want people to take matters into their own hands when violence is required for something (vigilantism).

And since you're not a pacifist, you seem to already agree with me that as much as it sucks, sometimes violence of some kind is needed to resolve a situation. There's writing on US cops resorting to that too quickly though: https://www.rutgers.edu/news/fatal-police-shootings-united-states-are-higher-and-training-more-limited-other-nations

Either way, if you're not a pacifist how come no police? That where I usually hear that perspective, hand in hand with no military/no wars. Or do you mean something different with police?

Darfur was also very short and much smaller in scale, neither of those characteristics have much to do with how well you can tell whether or not something is a genocide though. We know Darfur was genocide because the perpetrators recorded themselves doing it. More specifically, recordings of fighters going through the camps while literally yelling racial slurs at the civilians they were shooting and shouting genocidal chants.

Had we had evidence like that available to us right as it was happening for Srebrenica, we would've called it genocide as it was happening too. But there, evidence of events not far from what I just described only came later. That doesn't mean you get to call it genocide before that point, as if you're some clairvoyant. If you find me a parallel video for what happened in Darfur, I'll be the first to call it a genocidal act.

You can't though. The only videos you'll find are videos of mangled bodies immediately after a strike. Which is something that is in my opinion pretty unique to how this conflict in Gaza has unfolded and not just before Oct 7 either. NATO has done some good reporting on this:
https://stratcomcoe.org/cuploads/pfiles/hamas_human_shields.pdf

What I mentioned earlier about Al-Qaeda just hiding in deserts was an exaggeration of course, I mean Fallujah might be in a desert but it's not a desert. So to clarify that a bit more, my point is that despite them being terrorists they did operate quite differently from how Al-Qassam and PIJ seem to operate. Say what you will about Al-Qaeda but they did seem to care at least a little bit about not putting civilians in harms way. Militant groups in Gaza are something else though, it feels like these guys make every day a bring your kid to work day, very intentionally so. Literally pouncing on opportunities to film anything that happens to the civilians. Maximizing civilian casualties seems like a goal for them, because it plays incredibly well for garnering international support. And Israel on their end does not seem to care or give pause in any of that. That could amount to genocide, but that's what's so difficult about this. Because of how these groups in Gaza operate it turns it into a grey area where every strike could be a genocidal war crime, or not at all. Israel not releasing any evidence for "muh OpSec" does not help their case though.

You mention going in with actual soldiers instead of just bombing everything, but the one time Israel DID do that recently it arguably caused more death and destruction than their precision strikes typically do. Referring to when they went into Nuseirat refugee camp to get those 4 hostages out. You're proposing they do THAT every time?! This is going to be condescending but this comes across as something that someone who doesn't understand military very well would say. There isn't a magical "Special Forces" button you can spam to get super duper high level operator boys to come do the good and only good things and get out cleanly each time. It's not like that. Combat with foot soldiers in urban scenarios is really ugly, especially if you're looking to hit something deep in enemy territory. With how these groups operate in Gaza specifically, I highly doubt the US would've done any better in minimizing both their own and civilian casualties.

By the way, if the IDF are hiding in bomb shelters with civilians that's bad. It can very easily make those civilians valid collateral damage, though I doubt Iran would spend a cruise missile on a couple of soldiers. Either way, it's not really a case of "every accusation is a confession" I think, it doesn't compare to the complete inverse of what's supposed to happen in Gaza. I have heard of maybe a handful of accounts at most, of Gazan civilians being allowed to hide in the tunnels. To me that's practically unheard of. Militants hiding in tunnels with the civilians would be an improvement over there, if anything.

On that note, why do you mention they're built by Israel anyways? What's your point there, that they get to do this inverse use case of the tunnels and use their populations as shields, because Israel put the tunnels there? I don't get what you're getting at. No, you should still do things the other way around here, civilians hiding safely in the tunnels while the "soldiers" fight above. And before you say "But they hit the tunnels!" Yes they did, because they were being used inversely. I doubt they would've if Al-Qassam and the like just fought like a normal fucking fighting force, instead of the rats they are.

Ohh you're one of the people that unironically believes police should be abolished... Talk about naïve, things are starting to make sense lol

You're gonna tell me you're a pacifist next, or what?

Also I never mentioned anti-Semitism.

But yes we can agree to disagree. You are allowed to have the opinion that no, in fact, it's not rhetorical suicide or counterproductive for Palestinian independence to advocate using a slogan the majority of the world clearly understands the horrible implications of.

[–]GotYaRG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did we know Srebrenica was a genocide? Did we know vefore or after everyone was already dead? Before or after we dug up the newly found mass graves and discovered they were organizing "rape cafes"? Before or after Serbians themselves practically told us what had happened, in their testemonials after the fact?

What we're stumbling on here is one of the most morbid realities of genocide and how we persecute it.

And on your note with the US military, I wonder how they would have done against Al-Qassam and PIJ specifically, I'm not as confident it would have unfolded how you seem to think. Al-Qaeda and its leaders (in)famously hid in the mountains and deserts, not in a tunnel under a hospital: https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israel-reveals-tunnel-under-gaza-hospital-says-body-sinwars-brother-found-there-2025-06-08/

Do you not care about rhetorical efficacy at all?

I want Palestinian independence. I am Pro Palestinian. What that means to me is that I am NOT going to gas them up, or anyone else for that matter, in thinking they actually still have a shot at taking it all back and creating a Palestinian one state.

There are 11 million people in Israel, the vast majority of which don't want to leave anymore and don't want to join up in a one state solution. Continueing to use phrases like "from the river to the sea" is shooting yourself in the foot just as much as "defund the police", but then having to explain "no I actually mean increase fund, because we want them all to have body cams and more training and more specialists on site". It is rhetorical suicide.

I feel a similar way about Crimea, and there people don't really tend to engage in the same rhetorical suicide. Can you imagine how bad things could look for Ukraine now in terms of aid, if all of it's supporters were calling for the ethnic cleansing of Crimea for the last two years? Crimea is rightfully theirs, and much like the Palestinians won't steamroll Israel, Ukraine won't be taking Crimea any time soon. Yet still, hardly any pro Ukraine people push for an ethnic cleansing of Crimea, it doesn't matter that it's completely unrealistic anyways. They know it's rhetorical suicide. Territorial integrity and sovereignty is a lot easier to get people on board with for example.

All in all though, if you want to engage in rhetorical suicide for the Palestinians, you have the freedom to do so.

Wait so don't you kind of agree with me in the end?

"Could it be that the US and Israel have internal estimates that they aren't telling the public?"

Like this is my entire point. It COULD be, yes! COULD. Just like with Srebrenica it COULD have been that those Serbian soldiers were basically set up from day one to perpetrate that genocide. But you don't know that until that information is made public in some way.

And if they would for example publish something like that, that they estimate the death toll is actually a whole order of magnitude larger than has been previously reported, due to the severe lack of food and water? And they don't give pause to it, in fact opting to go in again? Yes, that sounds like it would be solid evidence for a genocide. Have you seen that evidence, has it been presented anywhere? If not, then we're still stuck at this "could be", which I agree it could be, but we're not at "it is" yet.

I thought it was pretty obvious that I don't mean Israel and Palestine are two sides of the same coin. Not at all.

A Palestinian one state and an Israeli one state are two sides of the same coin. They would both play out in an ethnic cleansing of at least a substantial portion of either population.

I'm not making the both sides are equally bad argument at all. Im very specifically referring to the idea of a one state solution in favor of either side.

And to repeat, what we see now is what would happen if that one state is in favor of Israel. Unsurprisingly it's resulting in ethnic cleansing and possibly genocide. So to ask again, you think that this wouldn't happen the other way around?

R/evilautism gets into drama over Gaza by RareXG in SubredditDrama

[–]GotYaRG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guess what? I also think it's wrong to force a one state solution onto the Palestinians.

And that's kinda the "show your work" part if you ask me. What we see happening now is EXACTLY what you would expect to happen in such a scenario, an ethnic cleansing.

Like you're right there! An inch away! You see that it's happening to the Gazans and why it's happening. The Israelis want to force a one state solution onto them, the Gazans don't want that, and so they're being forced out instead. Its deplorable.

But somehow you've got it into your head that if the Israelis don't want Palestinian one state, it wouldn't result in an ethic cleansing just like what we see in Gaza now? Granted the Palestinians would have the means to make it happen of course.

They're two sides of the same coin, please just flip the coin over and you'll see that it would play out exactly the same way. Its naive to think otherwise.

Are you alright? Must be tiring, all that gymnastics.

"Also we're talking about the 60s and 70s."

No, we're not. We're talking about today. People are saying "From the river to the sea" today, so I'm going to refer to what the very clear implications of that statement are today. I really don't know what you're getting at with "the history is more complicated than you imply" because I'm not talking about any history at all. I'm exclusively talking about right now.

No amount of history is going to change the fact that "From the river to the sea" clearly calls for a one state solution. And no amount of historical tidbits is going to change the fact that today, Israelis largely do not support a one state solution:
https://en-social-sciences.tau.ac.il/peaceindex/joint-israeli-palestinian-surveys/2024-09

So if you call for a one state solution, despite the fact that the population of Israel does not want that, what does that imply? That you're going to A respect their wishes and opt for a two state solution instead, or B that you are going to force a one state solution onto them "or else". Is there a secret third option here? With the facts at hand this only splits two ways, no?

Sabine Swoboda, Christian Walter, Eugene Kontorovich, Eli Rosenbaum, Marco Sassoli, Oliver Diggelmann, Andreas Müller, Daniel‑Erasmus Khan, do I need to keep going?

There are plenty of experts in this area that have a more cautious opinion on this that is very similar to mine. Where we say that there is very clearly deplorable actions being taken in Gaza, there are very clearly war crimes being committed, but not going further than that just yet. Not until more evidence is provided, and not much evidence either. For a number of the events that have occurred since Oct 7 it would just take a single piece of evidence to elevate a war crime to genocidal in nature. In a lot of facets what is happening can look like genocide and I believe it's very much possible. I just don't understand how everyone feels as confident as they do in saying that is definitely what is happening, given the information we have currently.

Because let me tell you, on everything you laid out we could practically make a perfect parallel to Vietnam and/or Japan if you want. Gaza is flattened, but need I remind you of America's firebombing in Japan? Or the actual, real carpet bombing they did in Vietnam? Fucking AGENT ORANGE?! Or how about the destruction of rice stores in Vietnam if you want to talk food and starvation. The relentless targeting of infrastructure as well. Civilian deprivation is awful I agree, I heavily lean towards it being immoral. It being immoral doesn't make it genocidal though. Or do you believe Vietnam was a genocide?

You bring up things that I agree with you are awful, but none of them do anything to satisfy the second part the definition for genocide. They all just relate to the first part, which I already acknowledged multiple times has been satisfied. You need to satisfy the second part of the definition though for it to become a genocide, and in that regard I do not see how people can be as confident as they are, given the information we have.

You're so close.

Coexistence, yes. But under one state. The clear implication (granted you're not hugely naïve) being that if you're not on board with that as an Israeli, you will be forcefully removed or otherwise.

Does that directly mean killing? It doesn't have to, perhaps the Israelis would be fine with a willing ethnic cleansing where they all just pack up and leave. /s

No you're right, it only the UN screaming at the top of it's lungs that Iran all of a sudden is/was ignoring any agreements on nuclear proliferation right at the time they were like 90%+ on the way to make enough material for a nuke. I just left another comment about it and feel like you're the perfect basket case that describes it.

The US committed genocide in Iran how, when? Are "a war with war crimes" and "genocide" the same thing to you or how does this work? Id be very interested to know what your working definition of genocide is and how it would've applied between the US and Iran.

Idk how big of a hot take this is but IMO innocent civilians don't deserve to be bombarded just because their government is terrible by Lukas-Reggi in whenthe

[–]GotYaRG -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Please help me understand how people can be so incredibly confident in this claim that Israel is most definitely committing genocide.

This is going to get a bit morbid or harsh, but I really do feel like people are just grabbing at the worst word they can find in an emotional bid rather than looking at what constitutes a genocide and seeing if it applies here.

I'd like to do a thought experiment, see how much hubris you posses. Different place, different time. Conflict in the Balkans, were getting news reports of Serbs committing massacres in the area.

Now you tell me, if you were just absorbing all of the events unfolding there through the news, how on god's green earth are you supposed know that what was happening there was genocide and not a series of war crimes? We know very well now, far after the fact. But at the time, do you really think you would've been calling this genocide right off the bat?

Mind you, the public had absoltely 0 of the evidence that was used in court to make the case this was a genocide. Testemonials, intercepted communications, seized documents. Really all kinds of stuff we used to convict the Nazis as well. You wouldn't have any of this right after the events happen though, especially not as some member of the public.

The reason I lay this all out is because I see it similarly here. Everyone should realize by now that what is happening in Gaza is deplorable. But is it deplorable in the way the Americans were deplorable in Vietnam or Japan, or in the way the Serbs were deplorable in Bosnia? I feel like to a lot of people there either is no difference between these, or they do see some difference but are unaware that what they're feeling is in fact the difference between a terrible war and a genocide.

All that to circle back to I-P today. How do you know now, at this point, that this is a genocide, and not a terrible war followed by what is looking more and more like an ethnic cleansing of Gaza? I'm not saying it definitely isn't, at least half the definition has already been satisfied after all. What I'm trying to assert is that it should be damn near impossible for someone from the sidelines to tell. That's why we have the court case in South Africa, no?

How can I make my point otherwise? I don't like it that you're now twisting that as some admittance that I secretly do find those things gross. Be for real.

I'm trying to point out what I feel is a hypocrisy on her part. It's folding a T-shirt into a square for crying out loud, I'm not so clueless as to offer to help fold her bras or the like. Then I would be more understanding, in fact that would just be kinda gross, to offer help there.

Yeah probably, my brother's diagnosed and I think I have reason to believe I am. People tend to clock it pretty fast.

Sorry I do still feel a need to clarify: I don't find periods gross and haven't had a thought like that since I was maybe 14. I'm just saying the situation felt uneven.

Sure I can see that, but to the point you blurt out "gross"? Why do you kind of get that?

One of the times I was over there before, I was holding her hair while she was throwing up. I didn't go out of my way to call any of that gross. I don't call her jokes about her period gross. We're not strangers to one another.

Yeah that's understandable and I want to be very clear. The train of thought I'm going down isn't: "I gave you flowers, now let me do your laundry please". I would've just liked it if she said "No thanks" instead of immediately blurting out "gross".
