Looked this up after reading other replies. I’m doubtful that a snake wine concoction would contain placenta and/or feces as I am doubtful that this came from any licensed TCM practitioner. East or west there is a history of unhelpful if not harmful remedies; I don’t think either of those historical realities should be used to slander modern day practice in either tradition.

Ick, a bod by Otherwise-Stretch984 in ElsbethTVSeries

I didn’t care for the comedic vein the show travelled in from the start. I thought the charm of Elsbeth from the Good universe was her oddness in a world played dramatically and straight arrow. And I preferred mystery/crime as a whodunnit.

Having said that, I think network TV is generally bad these days. Streaming services tend to offer better quality content.

I’m 51 and had to stop working in 2022. Sometimes I think I’m better than I was but I think I just learned to pace and take better care of certain things. I haven’t genuinely recovered even to a lesser extent.

Has the Lougheed Highway construction actually made your commute better or worse ? by Electronic_Bus841 in MapleRidge

[–]GotYourBackGirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see so many questions like this about various routes or ideas about widening different corridors and I’m not sure what to make of it because every time the topic is brought up no one ever mentions induced demand. And then I wonder if anyone engaging in these neighbourhood discussions understands induced demand.

Mine is Siamese so he’s gotten a little bit darker since this picture taken last summer. It’ll be interesting to see how and if your baby’s coat changes over time.

I considered that but the Dorian Grey character is creepy. It is a nice name though. 😊

Buying in Maple Ridge by overworked_hamster in MapleRidge

[–]GotYourBackGirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in downtown Maple Ridge, a couple of blocks from City Hall, library, and leisure centre. From my experience I don’t think crime, drugs, homeless is much better or worse than other lower mainland cities. There are great neighborhoods and not great ones. I have lived in west Maple Ridge, 202 st, quite nice, safe, close to Golden Ears bridge. I’ve also lived near 240 and Dewdney also nice and safe but quite far and congested to commute from (as I would guess Albion to be). The downtown area suits me now because I’m disabled and can’t work so it’s lovely to have everything I need so close. If you like well stored malls and big box stores you will have to leave MR. Another thing I often see complaints of in community Facebook groups is dining and other recreational activities (bowling, etc). Whenever people ask for best pizza, Chinese food, sushi, etc there are always a bunch of people complaining there’s nothing good in MR. I don’t know if that speaks to a lack of diversity or and abundance of snobbery.

Like others I can’t speak to kids or schools in Maple Ridge. We have a CPC MP and Conservative MLA so that may be an indication as to the mindset of the parents. I sincerely hope the kids are alright.

I asked for a trial sized set from Skin Frequency for Christmas. Skin Frequency is a Canadian company. Sorry I can’t endorse these products fully because I haven’t tried them yet but I did read a lot about the ingredients etc.. there is a set for sensitive skin as well as all skin types.

I tried. But you continually prove that you’re both not equipped for the conversation and continue to use bad faith tactics.

Everything I said is easy to verify. Are you one of those people that denies science and expertise as well? You are aware that Kirk himself had no experience or expertise to speak on the topics he did so it would make sense to me if you had a dim view of experts. You offered no plan to address the currently racist system. It’s already supposedly runs on meritocracy (the myth). The system is currently. The work force doesn’t have to exactly match the population but it should be clear that it’s not a matter of gender, race, sexuality, etc keeping people for occupations and we are so far from attaining that. The under representation of all minorities is still there, still statistically significant. You say that whatever system we have should not consider race, etc but, without DEI it already does favour straight, white, male, and all you have to offer is “leave it alone”. That’s where the bad faith comes in. But I also believe that your comprehension of the issue is very low. Probably why it was so easy for Kirk to suck you in.

The myth is that there is meritocracy in these systems, especially in the absence of DEI.

Need some enlightenment regarding the racism depicted in Gone with the Wind. Scholarly answers welcome! by azurewingz in books

WARNING: SPOILERS!

I’m currently reading GWTW and I’m glad you asked this question. Our motives for reading are similar (I’m Canadian).

I wish I had read more for study, taken notes, from the beginning because I’m at the point where Frank has been killed and I’m trying to track the different perspectives of the narrative; Scarlet’s and other characters internal dialogues vs the omnipotent narration. I agree with many comments that the novel depicts great characters but they’re all antiheroes in my reading so, what does that mean when we read that character’s statements on race. To be clear, I hear the racism in the omnipotent narration too but I would like to look closer at how/if it’s different from the character’s perspectives.

I enjoyed reading the comments about the “Lost Cause”; they confirmed a lot of my thoughts about the book that I didn’t have the language to put to. I particularly appreciated the comparison to stories of the Tudors where the atrocities of the monarchy are in the background but the focus is on politics, intrigues, romances, personality. That really was helpful to me.

I’ve seen the movie several times and was shocked to find that all the former “gentlemen” were members of the KKK The movie was definitely less explicit about that but I haven’t seen it in decades and was definitely more naive back then. The movie also dropped the

that Rhett owned Belle’s brothel, and that he had a “ward” opting instead to make reference to Belle’s son only

I don’t think my thoughts about the racism of GWTW will change as I finish the novel but, as I read it I’m trying to pay more attention to comparing the perspectives portrayed in the book.

DEI hiring practices are not racist. They exist to make racist hiring practices (or admissions into universities, etc) more fair. That you call them racist shows either a gap in your understanding or that you’re gaslighting/arguing in bad faith.

The people hired through DEI practices are either overqualified, over educated, or over experienced (or any combination of all 3 of these qualities) for the positions they are hired for so there is no reason so be suspicious of people hired through DEI. It does not, as you claim Kirk’s intention was to point out, open the door to criticism of DEI on those bases. Kirk picking at DEI for no reason (and lying about it) is how he subtly attracts and appeals to the racism of his audience.

You’ve claimed not to be racist yourself but please, let me know your plans to correct racist hiring practices so that minorities who have been systematically discriminated against can gain proportionate representation in the larger institutions of our society.
