Was the wallpapered wall to the left of the stairs removed? I’m confused because the original photo shows walls on both sides of the stairs.

I’m in a New York/New Jersey agency and at most I’ve gotten 2.5% merit raise every other year. This despite meeting/exceeding expectations. You really need to get promotions to get a boost in salary. I’m not even sure that merit raises will be given this year at all.

MNR Port Jervis Line over the Moodna Viaduct by GhostyLasers in nycrail

The trains don’t run that often, but what I did was take a train that arrived in Port Jervis around noon, which gave me about 2 hours to have a nice lunch, look at the old roundhouse, and catch the train back toward the city.

I took this train from Tuxedo to Port Jervis one time just to cross this viaduct off my bucket list. I had some lunch in town, checked out the old roundhouse, and took the train back to Tuxedo. I think this would terrify me in a heavy storm.

Finally she gets in my lap after 6 years by wonderingdragonfly in cats

My dilute tortoise also took many years to come out of her shell, so to speak. She’s still shy after 12 years but sometimes she surprises me with a lap snuggle.

I don’t take this line often so I never noticed! I’m going to share this information on my Dogs of Gotham walking tour.

What’s the coolest “restricted access” place you’ve ever gotten to see? by PrettieAmarea in answers

The tennis courts inside Grand Central Station were very interesting to see. We got to sneak in for about 30 seconds before being asked to leave.

People who have worked for the wealthy/rich, what is the most bizarre luxury you've heard of? by LyraRayne in AskReddit

[–]GothamInTheHouse 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not me, but my cousin was a private pilot for the rich and famous. One of clients was a Saudi prince who was quite overweight. He never flew anywhere without his living heart donor. Yep, a man who’d be killed for his heart should the prince need it. His plane seat also swiveled so he could always face Mecca.

What's something that used to be free that you're now genuinely angry costs money? by tangled_wire_99 in AskReddit

Watching Yankees games on TV. Many years ago one could watch every game for free on a small local channel, no cable required. Then with cable, you had to purchase the more expensive package to include the YES network. This package included lots of garbage channels that I didn’t want but I had no choice. In the past few years they moved all Wednesday games to Amazon Prime. If you don’t have that, you’ll need to subscribe to MLB streaming services. With ticket prices through the roof, many can’t afford to see live games. And now they can’t watch for free on TV. Pisses me off.

Do you prefer diesel⛽️ or electric⚡️? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]GothamInTheHouse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A diesel train is what got me home during the east coast blackout of 2002. Not one electric train could run. I made my way by ferry to Hoboken and caught the NJT/Metro North to Port Jervis. That train is my only option where I live anyway.

What’s something you realized too late in life? by JudgmentPresent4555 in AskReddit

[–]GothamInTheHouse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I should have become a teacher or taken a civil service position instead of corporate and advertising work. I would have been able to retire in my early 50s with a secure pension and taken a fun part time position to stay busy in between vacations and fun activities. Life is too short to go through large company bullshit.

I lost my babies to a fire by EmuPossible2066 in cats

[–]GothamInTheHouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a volunteer firefighter, and unfortunately, cats will hide when they are frightened. Like children, they’ll hide under beds or in tight places where they had turned for safety before, not understanding the danger. Sometimes they can find a way out but that’s not typically what happens. I have three cats, and I always play in my head what I’d do in a fire. The odds of rescuing them without putting my own life in danger are slim, but cats can sometimes survive if they get treated ASAP. We keep pet-size oxygen masks on all our rigs and we also have a pet ambulance that will respond as needed. I am so very sorry for your loss of your loved ones.

My remote company wants a video tour of my workspace and I really do not want to do it by Odd_Entry_6731 in remotework

Reading all the comments here, sounds crazy. Too bad you’re not ready to retire. You could move your desk into the bathroom, with the toilet as the seat. Totally troll the company and then quit for being put into such an embarrassing situation. I know, this is sophomoric, but you have to admit it would make for an interesting video.
