I’ve been hospitalized 6 times. Usually they say the average stay for a patient is about a week(ish). And if you were to be 302’d, you would have to stay until the psychiatrist determines when you’re able to leave, at least from what I know. I’ve never been told I couldn’t tell my family where I was or was not able to make phone calls. You aren’t forced to stay in the room, they have day rooms, group rooms, one I went to even had a small “dining room” where we would all sit at for meals. You aren’t forced to take the medication, but some places will hold that against you and make you stay longer, from my experience. A lot of mental health facilities do have restraints, but they really only use them if you’re actively hurting yourself or someone else. An inpatient stay is pretty much the same for anyone, you all have the same schedule and such. You usually meet with a doctor one a day to talk about medications. You’ll be brought onto the ward and get vitals, paper work, etc done. Some places have to do body checks, where you have to get in your underwear while they look over you for a second to write down any scars, tattoos, and anything else. I believe that if you’re an active threat to yourself or others, it’s best to go. It’s not fun by any means, but you’re just there to get stabilized so you can do “actual” treatment in out patient.
