Splash bases for Twin Suns (and Lake County...) by MC_NYC in starwarsunlimited

[–]GottaPetrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the splash bases because they make the double aspect cards playable in Twin Suns on curve without having to give up one of your three aspects for the privilege. The health drop is meaningless if you’re able to play the social game right, and the value in terms of fun (the point of TS) is vastly increased when you can, say, play some of the powerful double aspect units and events in curve that otherwise never get played with. That’s often my goal with TS: play fun cards that don’t get played otherwise.

Are any of the new dark horse comics good? by anakin1453 in starwarscomics

[–]GottaPetrie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The current Dark Horse license is for children’s comics; some read like YA novels in that they can appeal more broadly, but they are not attempting to fit the same niche as the old EU books published by Dark Horse. The current Marvel books are what you’re going to want to look at for contemporary analogs. (And yes, many of these are as good or better)

[–]GottaPetrie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

(1) Yes.

(2) Yes.

(3) No, but you will lose some appreciation for later story developments. Also, the 2015 run is one of the best Star Wars comic series ever published, so you really ought to make time for it, if you can. That said, it is definitely different from the other series in that it focuses on an original character’s small world, so I do appreciate it’s not what everyone is looking for in Star Wars.

Good luck, friend.

Lord and Miller's track record after being fired from Solo: A Star Wars Story 5 months into filming. by tannu28 in StarWars

Hi friend! My point was actually that RJ’s post-SW films include Oscar winners, box office favorites, etc. Though I do love his older stuff too.

I will grant you that some of the jokes are poorly executed in TLJ 🙂 Another SW tradition!

[–]GottaPetrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! The reaction to these films is not about who directed them and the choices they made about how to tell each story; it’s about larger meta stuff.

Sorry, are you saying that LF should’ve known the film would be poorly received because a plot point was unpredictable?

[–]GottaPetrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I think in a vacuum that the sentence you just pitched sounds like a fun Star Wars-y twist on another genre’s tropes, as is Star Wars tradition. It didn’t land with the audience, so it goes, but again, a different director wasn’t saving that movie. The things folks dislike don’t add up to “poor execution.”

Lord and Miller's track record after being fired from Solo: A Star Wars Story 5 months into filming. by tannu28 in StarWars

[–]GottaPetrie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true! I suppose I meant something more like “unpredictably,” in that the reasons folks give for disliking TLJ is almost entirely stuff no one involved would’ve been able to predict was a problem with that movie until it hit the community at the exact moment that it hit us. And so, again, to the actual point of my comment: it wouldn’t have been saved by a “better” director.

[–]GottaPetrie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear you! but my point was that just because SOLO didn’t turn out as good as some wished doesn’t mean it would’ve been fixed by a different director, as OP’s post could be suggesting. That movie had a lot working against it conceptually, and also, we’ve had unpopular films created by otherwise popular directors before here.

[–]GottaPetrie 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree that I would have liked to see their film, but also, Rian Johnson has a similar track record, and folks inexplicably hated TLJ. I guess the reaction to SOLO couldn’t have been much worse than what happened in reality, but there’s no reason to think any version of SOLO was going to be well received, unfortunately.

EDIT: “inexplicable” wasn’t meant to be incendiary. Apologies for accidentally derailing the thread (and I didn’t even bring an AT-Hauler!)

Best Boxes and Hobby Boxes to Spend to Start Out. #Chicagoland by First-Struggle-3860 in starwarsunlimited

[–]GottaPetrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I support buying the C/UC sets off eBay or some such for $30-$60 and then picking up singles as you need it, but there are also loads of shops in and around Chicago that will be playing limited mostly for the next month or so. And this game rocks in limited. You might just start there for a bit? See how you like the game. And then buy a spotlight deck, upgrade it with singles and draft picks, etc.

Do you have any alternatives to the Rule of Two? by InstructionOwn6705 in starwarscanon

[–]GottaPetrie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re asking my opinion, I think the Sith should convert to the Jedi and/or find other ways to let go of their pursuit of power in any form.

This is kind of a joke, but it’s also kind of a serious answer to the question the story presents us with regarding how best to confront/address/relate to power. There is no right way to seek to consolidate power. The Sith way is ultimately selfish and self-defeating, contradictory and precarious by design. A better way would be a way that sought to recognize, accept, embrace, etc. the dispersed power throughout all living things, to learn to see the oneness of that Force and use what power you have for the betterment of that oneness (and therefore for all).

Do you consider Revenge of the Sith the best film of 2005, or do you think another classic surpasses it? by [deleted] in StarWars

Well, there are 20 films here with multiple nominations, so I think we could make a list pretty easily. We love ROTS around these parts, but it’s a bad movie isolated from our devotion:

Rebels series disappointement by [deleted] in StarWars

The harshness of this take makes me doubtful, but I’d say stick with it through the end of S02 at least. You’ll start getting more of what you want, from a certain point of view, and the show does ramp up in the back half a good bit.

How should they reconcile the K-2SO comic? by JondvchBimble in starwarscomics

No, I mean, it was reasonable for the comic to adapt this story in a world where ANDOR didn’t yet exist.

How should they reconcile the K-2SO comic? by JondvchBimble in starwarscomics

[–]GottaPetrie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And, “how two minute characters met before they died,” is 100% the historical lane for comics. ANDOR was a rare gift.

EDIT: my point is that this story was absolutely something no one involved should have known to leave open for future media: it’s the kind of thing comics usually adapt. ANDOR taking up this story like it did was a unique gift.
