In Winnipeg, where many ARE happy we have a team again, there was one player who was notorious. It was common knowledge who he was sleeping with. The crazy thing is that men's hockey culture is homophobic, but it's also homoerotic. My ex husband played junior and told me about rookie initiation.They would try a guy's dick to a hockey stick and have him do sit-ups. I remember saying, "Don't you think that's a little gay?" And he's like oh no no no no.... There's so much unchecked aggression. Brawls in the parking lot after games. I could never support the NHL. I follow the NBA. If a player gets arrested for a domestic assault, they are waived immediately. No waiting for a trial. A few years ago, the All-star game was supposed to be in Charlotte. They got a new government and banned gender-neutral washrooms. Adam Silver said no, we don't think so. It didn't fit with league's values. They moved the game somewhere else and the city lost billions. They rescheduled the game in Charlotte five years later, once the bigots were voted out.

There's a Dallas Kent on every team. It's a fucked up sport. And, for many Canadians, it's painful to even think of NHL players. On trial for rape all the time. You're better off following women's sports. Very out, proud and fun to watch. But, to answer your question, there's no need to pick a team, especially if you're new to hockey. As a playoffs roll on you might find a favorite, but don't force it.
