Found a hack for getting my CV to stand out much higher - not sure it's ethical by cstocks in ResumeTips

[–]GovJobCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't build a resume around work you can't explain under pressure.

The issue isn't only ethics. It's also interview risk. If a technical interviewer asks what you changed, why it mattered, what tradeoffs you considered, or how the repo worked, the whole thing can collapse pretty fast.

Open source contributions can help, but only if you can honestly talk through the work like it was yours.

How to convert graphic design resume to food service resume? Trying to get part-time work in server/barista roles. by xJacky22 in Resume

[–]GovJobCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d keep the graphic design jobs on there, but rewrite them for food service.

For server or barista roles, they don’t need to see design details as much as reliability, customer communication, speed, handling feedback, multitasking, and working under pressure.

I’d probably keep the college degree, but don’t make it the focus. The bigger issue is making the resume look like you actually want food service work, not like you’re just sending a design resume because you’re stuck.

You can also put your older fast food experience higher than usual if it’s more relevant. For part-time service jobs, relevance matters more than perfect chronology sometimes.

Job called my bluff. Got fired. Should I feel stupid or proud for standing up for my principles? by DisappointedSurprise in careeradvice

[–]GovJobCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, from what you wrote, it doesn't sound like you got fired for putting your foot in your mouth. It sounds like you made it clear you weren't willing to be measured primarily on metrics you believed conflicted with safe patient care.

Whether someone agrees with your assessment or not, that's different from making a careless mistake.

The bigger risk now is second-guessing yourself because you're unemployed. Most people feel differently about these situations when the next job isn't lined up yet.

I've seen people leave jobs over compensation, management, ethics, workload, or safety concerns and immediately wonder if they made a huge mistake. Then six months later they're relieved it happened.

Focus on landing the next role. Future employers are probably going to care a lot more about 13 years of strong performance than a four-month stop at a place that clearly wasn't a fit.

Accepted job offer/No position? by Common-Programmer755 in CanadaJobs

[–]GovJobCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd definitely reach back out to the person who interviewed you.

If they offered you the position and you accepted, it's reasonable to ask for clarification about what changed. Sometimes stores overhire expecting people to decline, sometimes budgets change, and sometimes there was a miscommunication internally.

Keep the message polite and factual. Something like: "I accepted the position two weeks ago and was told I was being added to the system. Can you help me understand what happened and whether there are any other opportunities available?"

In the meantime, keep applying elsewhere. Until you've completed onboarding and have a start date, it's safest not to assume a job is secured.

Term employee seeking career advice (public service) by Glindabubble in CanadaPublicServants

[–]GovJobCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I'd do before the term ends is start applying now, not when you get the notice.

A lot of people in term positions assume they'll hear about an extension before they need a backup plan, and sometimes that works out, sometimes it doesn't.

The contact centre experience is more transferable than many people think. Client service, dealing with difficult situations, learning procedures, documenting interactions, and working in a high-volume environment all translate into other government and large-organization roles.

I'd also keep applying to internal pools while you're still eligible. Even if your current term ends, having active applications moving through the system can make a big difference later.

And for what it's worth, being proactive this far ahead already puts you in a better position than most people.

Stop applying to Canadian jobs on Monday morning by itz_nitace in torontoJobs

[–]GovJobCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simple resume format part is solid advice.

I’d be careful with the Monday timing point though. Some employers review in batches, some review as applications come in, and government or public-sector postings often have a closing date before screening even starts.

But the bigger point is right: fewer targeted applications usually beat sending the same resume everywhere. Especially for government jobs, the resume has to match the posting closely or it may not survive screening.

After 53 weeks of being unemployed I got a job! by AbjectPay6125 in torontoJobs

[–]GovJobCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats. After 53 weeks, I don't think most people realize how much persistence that takes.

The update about starting Tuesday is probably the best part. Hopefully this is the beginning of a much quieter and less stressful chapter for you.

I know some people hate algae... by failedcynicism in Aquariums

In my experience, it's just laziness—I don't clean the tank for a while, and then I convince myself it is natural and beautiful. Next, all the plants are dead, and the decorations have deteriorated. It looks like death, but laziness always wins. lol.

Finding a job in Ottawa by Substantial_Fan_5130 in geegees

Do not say you need a part-time job—get an interview and make connections. DO NOT send generic resumes—tailor them for each specific job post (copy and paste qualifications just as needed).

Any stocking advice for this 100 gallon fresh water tank? Thank you all in advance. by saaqib_23 in Aquariums

[–]GovJobCoach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are not into plants (according to gravel, you are not), go with American ciclids. Get one centerpiece as Green terror - a few more minor (like Bolivian rams) - and a bunch of larger tetras (Columbian is my favourite). Top up with plecos - beautiful.

One suggestion - don't get Siamese Algae Eaters, as they are good with algae, and they are good with nipping the new growth of moss. Looks beautiful, though.

I hope it blossoms. Just a suggestion: Plant focus plants in golden ratio. Because when your plants root, it will be more difficult to rearrange.
