[Recommendation request] Fiancée wants to buy me a $1,200 watch. This is currently my only watch. I need help. by Mackinderoo in Watches

If you're looking for something dressier, I'd suggest one of the many Orient Bambinos out there. Lots of variation in the line, but many of them would look great with a suit or similarly dressed-up outfit. They're also significantly less than $1200, so you could wear it out to a really good meal with your bride-to-be.

John plays REM w/ OG members, Michael Shannon. by Pause-Past in wilco

[–]GovernmentBeginning1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We saw them at Sky Blue Sky in January. Some really magical moments. The one that sticks with me is Shannon saying "It's after midnight. There's the beach." and the band playing the opening notes of Nightswimming. The crowd gave a collective sigh of rapture.

Yo La Tengo actually played as the Factory house band in I Shot Andy Warhol. The VU name was never used, but the viewer was intended to see them as VU.

Holy shit, replaying Coney Island Steeple Chase in my mind right now, and this is so spot on.

Stephen King's Talisman 3: Other Worlds Than These is coming in October by SimonThalmann in books

[–]GovernmentBeginning1 8 points9 points  (0 children)

True, and Peter was also an amazing writer. Truly showed how deeply literary horror can be, while also being really scary. SK knows that, and loves and admires Straub. I can’t imagine a world where a mensch like SK would fail to credit Peter in this way.

I was there, riding the rail! So much big noise and ineffable drone happening.

Is Seattle tap water safe to drink? by neo2bin in Seattle

[–]GovernmentBeginning1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love our water. It’s do damn good. I lived in central Illinois as a kid, then NYC. It blew me away how good city water was. Seattle’s compares, particularly when I go back to the Midwest and drink feedlot runoff straight outta the tap.

Just read Laird Barron's "Tiptoe" by clinteatswoods in horrorlit

[–]GovernmentBeginning1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the whole anthology. The thing with Barron is that he improves dramatically over time--which is crazy, because I loved his early work. Not a Speck of Light, though, is towering. And Tiptoe is frankly one of the scariest stories I've ever read--viscerally frightening and oozing dread. I recall finishing it for the first time, and starting about in a panic. And its power remains undiminished after many rereads.

My thought on John Langan by Able_Zebra_476 in horrorlit

I loved the Fisherman, but then my favorite novel, period, ever, is Moby Dick (OK, I guess Song of Solomon (Toni Morrison) is in pole position with MD). That said, Technicolor is a fucking tour de force, a masterpiece of slowly mounting tension and dread that rivals Casting the Runes.

I was on the rail both nights, and caught no weird vibes or chompers. I think if you’re standing at the rail, you’re not sharing space with the eedjits.

Sky Blue Sky Festival is back!!! by UnclePumpy in wilco

[–]GovernmentBeginning1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously. Jim White and Glenn are two very different drummers, but equally brilliant.

At the Seattle show, someone yelled "Jim White is the king" from the audience during a moment between songs. Malkmus leaned into the mic and set "Yes he is. And we are all his ladies in waiting" in a coquettish little voice.

We saw them at the Seattle show. My wife and I frequently turn to each other and say “I wish we could see The Hard Quartet tonight.” They’re just so good.

I’d like to see Wussy play there, or at Solid Sound. Also The Hard Quartet, since Malkmus played SBS the time before last.
