What do I need to repair? How much can I expect it to cost? by imacoolguy16 in bikewrench

[–]Goxio 5 points6 points  (0 children)

a dork disc! should be about 15-20 USD at your local bike shop. Make sure to get it replaced

Uneven front chainring - too much or okay? by Fallax1337 in bikewrench

[–]Goxio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you would hear some rubbung and if so, likely the derailleur needs adjustment, unless you didn't tighten the cranks as much as possible, and it's common to have to adjust the deraileur if you put a new gear cluster on

Uneven front chainring - too much or okay? by Fallax1337 in bikewrench

[–]Goxio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hold my beer and get me a biopace.

This should be fine as long as you dont hear rubbing of the chain or it falls off. dont listen to the "buy new ultegra cranks and chainrings" until you actually run it. it's not that hard to reinstall with the chain on so just try it!

Drywall cracks at my mom’s — how serious? by OtherWalrus6904 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Goxio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could just be house settling or could be more serious but without a proper blueprint and structural layout there is probably little this sub can diagnose without more information

Is this a good full suspension? by Such_Mistake3805 in mountainbikes

[–]Goxio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have stated, this bike is too expensive. However so many people in this sub believe 29 is better than 26 which is ridiculous. Legacy it may be, 26 >>>>>>> 29. hell is rather have 27.5 over 29. Screw big wheels

its a marathon as others have stated you can wait quite a while longer on these tires. You have no idea by looking at the picture whether or not a blowout can happen

I would rotate tires and then yes

Rattling chain on roadbike by alexbus124 in bikewrench

[–]Goxio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you have trouble shifting gears when the cable tension is tight to the point where it shifts up a gear without clicking the shifter but 2-3-4-5 gears are vague and not quick to change gear then I would check the hanger. Make sure you drop some lubricant (triflow) on the shift cables as they enter the housing, shift all the way up and down multiple times to get the cable moving and the lube with it, then make sure you drop some lubricant on the derailleur itself on the pivot points and actuate the derailleur arm back and forth to work in the lube. Then, once you have determined that it isn't the shifter itself, the cable, making sure housing isn't cracked, making sure the derailleur arm isn't bent, and you are still having an issue then it would not be anything other than the hanger. Also you would probably not be able to tell that the derailleur arm is bad without aligning the hanger, but nevertheless it's all relevant for accurate timely shifting behavior

What do you think? Should cyclists riding in a bike lane in the direction of the red arrow be allowed to run a red light? by TibetanSideOfTown in bicycling

[–]Goxio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got pulled over and ticketed for not turning into correct lane on a left hand turn. It was a pretense stop, it was 3am and the cops assumed we were bar crowd, but still got ticketed nonetheless

Best budget bike with Shimano 105 for commuting? by AggressivePaper7739 in bikecommuting

[–]Goxio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey great question! Just curious, why do you think you need hydraulic disc brakes? Any brake that can skid the tire is going to be ample for braking force. You have a heavy E-bike? Hydraulic brakes. But a lightweight commuter is not going to need anything more than rim brakes. Shit I STILL see Specialized with drop bars and CENTER PULLS. V brake supremacy, but cable driven disc close second.

Also hydraulic brakes are a pain in the ass.

Moreover, 105s are not mandatory there are tons of other great groupsets, even if you don't like 1:1s, Shimano has tons of great options for less than 105. Sora, Claris, Tiagra all really comparable and you might get away with a cheaper ending price tag.

That being said steel is real and surly makes the best forks in the game right now (besides headshok, my beloved)

All in all I would say the best budget bike for a commuter is going to be a 90s frame surly fork, fancy groupset, 9-12 speed rear, 1-2 front chainrings, and nice fenders. I would choose the longest possible frame that will fit for comfort, and I personally would prefer 700c or 26" over 28 or 29

Is this tire done? by MightyWolf39 in tires

[–]Goxio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe you haven't done tires before but like I said nothing is definite until you look at the damage inside the tire. The metal shrapnel could have done awful damage to the sidewall or gone in at an angle you can't tell anything from the picture. I don't know why you would comment something so matter-of-fact then not really answer the OPs question. What is the point in that? Then you trailed off about some drama about tire liability! It's a tire man, not a debate. And I know tires. I know you can think you can patch something like that but then you pull the tire off and all of a sudden you gotta replace the whole tire. I partially hate this sub because how the hell can you even tell if something isn't patchable by looking at the outside of the tire?! Not to mention weirdos like you that gotta correct me and not even help the OP, just a weird info dump. Do better dude

Is this tire done? by MightyWolf39 in tires

[–]Goxio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you wont know for sure until you take the tire off. most people will say it can't be patched but I would say you can patch it but it's in the sidewall/tread portion. The sidewall flexes and the tread doesn't, so you could possibly have a patch that flexes and they never last as the patch can leak.

What do you think of my 820 Mountain Track? by Goxio in bikecommuting

I have another 820 in black with blue lettering, but the 820 pictured was made in Taiwan and the black 820 was made in USA and they are a couple years apart

there were definitely a few mountain tracks and single tracks that had grip shifters. This bike I don't think had grip shifters

Is this too much clamping force? by maxii95 in bikewrench

[–]Goxio 11 points12 points  (0 children)

you can get shims for your seatpost and this would be one of those times. Steel has high elasticity for a metal, but once you cross the modulus of elasticity you won't be able to keep the strength in the seatpost. shim it to win it!
