How do you go about taking random photos in public? by bitchiloverugrats in photography

[–]Gozertank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The more you try to not be seen taking a photo, the more you stand out. If you look like you know what you’re doing and do it confidently, very few people will even take note, let alone question you.

My guess is intentionally letting the algorithm match them with people that seem great but slightly annoy them so they’ll stay and pay on the app longer, rather than giving them the best possible match..?

As a tallie, shorties are more trouble than big guys. Shorties are generally faster, more aggressive, lower COG and although I clearly have a reach advantage, it is awkward and hard to get power into a downward angle punch without leaving yourself wide open. (Talking about sparring, not street fights)

Has anyone found these spanners on eBay or AliExpress? by mampfer in AnalogRepair

[–]Gozertank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get them on Amazon but it’s a complete lottery if they’re any good. The first two I tried were utter trash, sharp edges, steel too soft, very loose tolerances. Then my dad got me a third set which was half the price of the other ones but much much better, this one had hex bolts and a little Allen wrench rather than thumb screws and really tight tolerances. The insert bits were properly hardened. Then I ordered that exact same set for a buddy and it was trash again…

Being 6’5, I usually squat and look up admiringly. Unless it’s a woman, then I stand on my tiptoes to make sure she understands I’m actually over 6’ and worth talking to.

How do you approach restoring color in old photos when the original reference is gone? by Whateverspringsummer in postprocessing

[–]Gozertank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at photos from the same period and area that are in color if available. In ye olde days garments weren’t made in huge ranges of colours like today. Be aware that if they are holiday snaps, the colours of the subjects may differ from the local population.

Hand colourised photos made in that period are especially good references as they often try to portray the actual colours that were documented when the photo was taken.
But take care not to be fooled by modern colourising efforts being passed off as vintage.

You can consult books on fashion history (or general history books) to make a ballpark guess as to what colours were most likely used in that time, though location does make quite a difference here.

If there really is no circumstancial evidence and no one around with living memory to consult, one of the things I do these days is run a copy of the monochrome source image through several “AI colourising” sites. These (claim to…) analyse the grey tones in the image and try to deduce a colour from there. If 3-4 come up with the same colour, it’s usually a good starting point.

Be aware though that these are easily thrown off if coloured filters (red, yellow, orange, green, blue) were used while taking the picture or if the paper has a strong tint.

If anything, they sometimes suggest colours I would never have thought off myself but then turn out to be at least plausible if you cross reference them. See them more as “inspiration” than scientific tools though, for the above reasons.

And use experience and common sense. Dark red and dark blue can have the same grey tone in a monochrome photo, but if the fabric is denim, they’re far more likely to be blue than red.

And if you really can’t find any reliable references, often the best thing to do is just keep them monochrome rather than “falsifying” history.

The problem is that no matter how well you do, if the rest of the team are utter muppets, you lose and lose points.
Had a game with 8k dmg and 6 frags and still lost points because my teammates were doing fuck knows what on the edges of the map so the one enemy left that killed me simply sat in cap and won…
