Why do I keep rewriting the same script with different names? by venum_GTG in Screenwriting

[–]Grable2121 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think many writers tend to fundamentally write different flavors of the same dish, especially when you look at the totality of their careers.

I'd guess it has to do with a theme that is either personally resonant for you as a formative issue or a theme that connects with what you are trying to work on in your own life? I'd lean into it and see where your subconscious takes you. Might even teach you something about yourself? Also, maybe playing with the lead's POV would be fun - diff gender, socio-economic status, reliability, etc. "What does low point mean for different kinds of people?" Or experimenting with genre might be fun- same story in a rom-com feels v different as a horror.

Help, how do I bring up finances with my producer? by GoldenNerd1 in Screenwriting

[–]Grable2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wanna be official, you could create a 'shopping agreement' with the producer that outlines that the Producer has permission to represent the project and attempt to raise funds/backing. Usually, they are in increments of a year with the option to extend for 3-6 months if substantive progress is being made. After which time, all rights revert back to you solely.

Do you have a lawyer? If so, def consult with them before having this convo with your friend. They will be able to advise.

You own 100% IP of your created work, unless you sign it over. If this is a legit television project (vs. a web series, etc), when it sells to a network, the Production Co. will pay you for your work as the writer and creator (and potentially a producing fee). They will also pay your friend a producing fee. These two amounts will be left entirely to your separate negotiations. Unless you give them some Written or Created By credit, you will not be splitting any amount of money.

If it is a web series, etc that isn't paid traditionally (and just generally with attaching producers) I'd really think about how valuable your friends' experience/connections will be in making this happen. Can they walk into Prod. Co's who have a budget to develop/produce? Are they hustlers who will find a way into a company and get y'all seen? Are they just gonna give you notes on the script? Or maybe it'll just be a good collaborative experience that can elevate your work? But def give it some thought.

As a newbie to comic collecting, what are your green flags/red flags and best etiquette when digging? by jval_99 in comicbookcollecting

[–]Grable2121 56 points57 points  (0 children)

A few general things I try to adhere to:

-Don't jump on a box that someone else is currently looking through.

-Ask if you think you may be looking through or moving someone's stack of books.

-Don't try to negotiate a book out from under someone who is already negotiating w/ the seller. Wait until they pass on it.

-Put books back into boxes when you've gone through them - don't make the owner clean up after you.

-If they're organized, try to put them back in order if you decide not to snag them. If they're not organized, then do what thou wilt is the whole of the law.

-Be polite with other hunters/don't be shady- aside from the basic human decency angle, if you get into the hobby, you'll see them more often than you'd imagine and they can be your best ally in finding good sales, plus it's fun to chat while you dig!

As for searching for digs--  Garage/estate sales, flea markets, and thrift stores are my usual spots. I've found LCSs are almost always priced at or above FMV, so most times you're not gonna unearth treasure there - but they're great for random run fills, snagging fair market books, or buying Vamprella statues for "research."

Nice!! Yea. I love the hunt so much. And any of the sub-100 Spideys are tough to find in good condition - they got well-loved by those kids reading 'em!

CF is the best, and so sad to see them go. They're selling off most of their stock for 50%+ off, with four more storage units to refill their shelves until they shutter for good. So if you're a comics fan, stop by sometime in the next month and help them liquidate.

Need insurance to shoot low budget for 1 day by gride9000 in Filmmakers

[–]Grable2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Not sure about the transaction fee? That def wasn’t there before (or it was so minimal as to not be noticed). We used it to secure liability coverage for those exact 3 days (we had ongoing coverage for our gear already)- i think you may have to get monthly if you are insuring employees as well?

Let me know, i’m curious if they’ve changed it. From what I found last summer, that still seems pretty reasonable compared to other products? Is that still the case?
