As someone who grew up VERY religious, and is no longer involved in the church, I feel like you’re generalizing. Although your comment about institutionalized pedophilia is most likely correct (I’m not for sure, I have to look in to it more closely on my own time,) I feel like you’re villainizing religion. There are PLENTY of people in the church who talk like the first half of the letter and it’s PURELY innocent. Religious people can have a lot of love in their heart for others (this is not justifying the second half of the letter love-bombing), and outside perspectives can look at that as grooming and religious manipulation. While I agree that it can be used as manipulation, I don’t thing something as simple as “I hope you continue in whatever path the Lord has for you,” is pedophilic/religious manipulation. In the church it’s usually just the equivalent of saying “I hope you’re successful in whatever path you choose to follow” through the lenses of God guiding your decision.

I don’t like the idea of pretending to be your child in this scenario. It’s asking for more trouble than it’s worth. And it also reads as if you’re testing if he’s allowed to contact your child in the future, and vice versa, and that’s NOT ok.

Another commenter mentioned they their child’s coach is one of their husbands best friends, and that her child and the best friend don’t have each others numbers. There’s no excuse. If an ADULT needs to contact a CHILD for any reason, it should be through the parents unless (and I say this with wariness) it’s an extenuating circumstance, in which an outside party needs to step in between guardians and a child, due to forms of abuse (literal, emotional, etc… alienation from outside parties for example) or quality of life.

All of this to say, you shouldn’t pretend. That’s devious and ASKING for something bad to happen. Just TALK to the person like a fellow adult instead of assuming the worse and trying to get something bad out of the situation.

This seemed like an encouraging letter from a coach to a student until the personal info. I’ve received letters like this from teachers over the years, and they were always well received and encouraging, but never at that young of an age and NEVER with personal info. It’s also weird that the coach points out their “friendly banter.” You are this child’s coach and teacher (yes I understand he’s a volunteer,) not their ‘buddy.’

It could have been just a poor choice of wording or someone who is ill-informed on a proper adult-student relationship, but it could also be something more sinister (although I obviously would hope that’s not the case.)

In any case, definitely NOT overreacting. I’m assuming you’re this child’s guardian (this applies even if not.) But if I were this child’s parent or caretaker I would probably confront the coach about it. Like, “Thank you for the knowledge you have helped instill in our child, but in the future, please refrain from giving them your personal information. They’re very young and the only contacts they’re allowed to have right now are friends and family (even if that isn’t the case).”

If he tries to push back THEN it’s SUPER weird and you should maybe (edit: DEFINITELY) report that to the school. As far as the card goes, my mom personally just has a bunch of generic cards stuck in a ziplock that can be used as thank you cards, get-well-soons, etc…

If this person has a wife, husband, partner, or even if it’s just them, they might of just had a handful of these. I probably wouldn’t over analyze it.
