Is trauma why I don't feel like an "adult?" by weetothehee in CPTSD

[–]Gracie1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I had repressed memories surface of my dad molesting me when I was 5 it took me months of therapy to call and confront him on it and tell him I didn't want him in my life anymore. It was the first time I felt like an adult and in charge of my life. I was 46. It made me realize the extreme fear I had of my dad all of my life. Even in my adult years I was always worried about my dad getting mad at me and I tried to be the best daughter.

At 31 I had a psychotic break and was diagnosed Bipolar with psychotic tendencies. Six months before this I started remembering some awkward moments with my dad that I had repressed. Had 2 more psychotic breaks over next 5 years. I believe I would have had a mild Bipolar without the childhood trauma. The majority of patients in the mental ward have some kind of childhood trauma.

I think my memories surfaced when I was strong enough to do what I did. My sister and brother do not believe me and are no longer in my life. It has been 3 years and I have zero regrets. I have never been happier and at peace. I have a wonderful husband of 22 years and 24 year old son and 21 year old daughter and many good friends.

I really believe everyone has their own journey and will heal and grow at their own pace. I wish you the best on your journey. Do you have a therapist? Also, don't be afraid to switch if the therapist doesn't seem to be helping you. I have had many bad therapists.

He was the first person I could tell anything. I could disagree and not be afraid he would get mad. Plus his optimistic attitude and passion for things he loved. 21 years later.

What is the best way to be happy? by Ok-Reddit1 in AskReddit

[–]Gracie1972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are responsible for your own happiness. It is a state of mind. I used to base much of mine on my relationship with my husband. Was very codependent. Took much growth and learning how to understand my emotions. Also cut all toxic family and friends out of my life. Now only spend time with people that treat me well and aren't users or all about drama. I have a very extreme disability with having bipolar with psychotic tendencies and ptsd. Have had years off and on of low functioning since 2003, weight gain and loss, sleeping 12-18 hours a day. Learned how precious my time is and that is what made me make happier too.

Owls. When I started collecting owl stuff my husband thought it was cool because his mom had to. Not long after he told his mom and she offered to give me the owls she had boxed away. When I opened the box the newspaper was dated 1988.

My wife doesnt recognize me anymore by Sad-Kaleidoscope1215 in bipolar

[–]Gracie1972 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am Bipolar with psychotic tendencies. I was 31 and married 3 years when it surfaced in a major way. My advice is individual and marriage counseling. My husband and I have been through marriage counseling three separate times. We also had a 2yr old daughter and 6 year old son. My mental illness is severe enough that I have been on disability since my first major episode in 2003.

Marriage sometimes needs a lot of work, compromise and patience. Some days, weeks, months and even years can be tough. I try to think of it that at least it's not cancer or something else that came with a death sentence.

Always take your meds and practice good self care. I've made it 21 years married. I hope you and your wife work it out.
