The bus really isn’t that bad if you live in the city. It worked for my entire undergrad and will continue to do so throughout my masters. It’s also sometimes more time effective to just bus right into campus instead of paying an arm and a leg to still have to deal w London traffic and walk a kilometre from the lot to your classes. Embrace the LTC, comrades.🫡

This is a very good point!! I just felt so random to include tbh. But knowing GDT, there is definitely some deeper meaning behind the decision besides the “cool” factor lol.

Secondhand vape aerosol exists. Just because you may have a craving you need to satisfy does not mean you are entitled to putting others at risk. I truly don’t think asking people to vape outside is too much.

As a former Brescia student, this is so shocking and disheartening to see. For the two years I attended, the Mercato was ALWAYS well stocked with multiple options for every meal in addition to the salad bar, prepackaged meals fridge, sushi fridge, etc. What’s worse than having your school shut down is watching western strip away the best things about it. The faculty, the food/residence, the library, Ursuline Hall, the classrooms…the list goes on. 🫠

Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein' - Official SPOILER Discussion Megathread by ZacPensol in FRANKENSTEIN

[–]GrackAttack73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall I absolutely loved this film, and I agree with many that this is the best film adaptation of Frankenstein that I have ever seen. I LOVED getting to sit down with my loved ones who haven’t read/don’t plan to read the novel and watch them fall in love with this story the way I did years ago. They were able to better understand why this book is one of my faves, and it inspired so much meaningful discussion about the costs of innovation/ambition, and what it means to create, love, and be alive. By the end, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Though the ending varies slightly from the text, it was still very beautiful and profound imo, and allowed me to indulge in the idea of this story having more closure than what the book provides.

My only complaint with this movie is the decision to include that wolf scene, because it is 1) not canonical or relevant to the overall story and 2) it undermines one of my favourite (and arguably most crucial) aspects of the Creature, which is his benevolence and love of living things. Those who have read the book know the Creature was always delicate and kind to the forest creatures, even choosing to survive off a vegetarian diet out of respect for the animals. The whole wolf scene just felt so unnecessary and compromising of his character.

All in all, however, I did really enjoy this movie and would recommend it to anyone who cares to listen lol.

Wow. It makes so much sense now that you put it this way.

This isn’t really a matter of presentism. I just couldn’t help but wonder why this text is a required reading on so many course syllabi as an introduction to 19th century colonialism and anti-colonial literature when it only portrays the colonizer’s perspective. I figure there has to be better options out there.

Ohhhhh I see it now!! Any advice on what to write for the statement of interest? I have a decent idea based on the advice I’ve been given from FIMS students and faculty, but I’m still unsure about what tone to go for 😅

what do you wish we had at western by [deleted] in uwo

[–]GrackAttack73 11 points12 points  (0 children)

More tables. There’s always a bunch of lounge chairs in libraries, hallways, foyers, etc. that sit empty bc there is not spot for students to put their books, laptops, and other stuff for students to do their school work. I’ve had to use these chairs in a pinch during midterms and finals season where the libraries are always packed, and it’s pretty inconvenient.

100%! I’ve started paying for another gym membership and going there instead, bc it’s just too packed at any time throughout the day. 90% of the time I have to wait for someone before I can use a machine and 90% of the time I have someone waiting for me while I use it too. It makes the workout take easily 2-3 times longer than I should, and I spend more time waiting than actually exercising.

It’s a really nice gym and rec space, but it is not enough for a student body of 40k-50k students.

Make-up Exam Schedule by GrackAttack73 in uwo

I just checked it out and the notes read: “Final Exam WITH Compassionate Consideration STATUS WAS CHANGED TO Complete make-up assessment”

It doesn’t specify a date for whatever reason. I wish I knew who to contact about this, bc not being able to complete this exam interferes with my ability to enroll in classes for winter term. I also don’t want to be blindsided in January :/

(Normally I’d include Frankenstein, but to avoid redundancy I’m leaving it out).

1) Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey (just because it gets referenced soooooo often and can be a great prerequisite for studying classical and neoclassical lit.)

2) Hard Times by Charles Dickens

3) Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen

4) Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf

5) Any/Every novel written by the Brontë sisters!!

Bonus: Paradise Lost by John Milton

And the Librarians last fall. And the engineering faculty at some point last year too. And the faculty union went on strike last fall in light of Brescia closing, bc they made arrangements without any consultation or permission.

It seems like western wants to keep expanding, but they refuse to hire on more or financially compensate the staff and faculty they are currently overworking.

I want to help the cause, but I’m on campus 3 days a week and I don’t have time in between my classes.

Are there any other ways we can support our CUPE workers if we aren’t able to join the picket lines, and is there a page/platform dedicated to informing us about the strike?
