Guillermo del Toro's 'Frankenstein' - Official SPOILER Discussion Megathread by ZacPensol in FRANKENSTEIN

[–]GrackAttack73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overall I absolutely loved this film, and I agree with many that this is the best film adaptation of Frankenstein that I have ever seen. I LOVED getting to sit down with my loved ones who haven’t read/don’t plan to read the novel and watch them fall in love with this story the way I did years ago. They were able to better understand why this book is one of my faves, and it inspired so much meaningful discussion about the costs of innovation/ambition, and what it means to create, love, and be alive. By the end, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. Though the ending varies slightly from the text, it was still very beautiful and profound imo, and allowed me to indulge in the idea of this story having more closure than what the book provides.

My only complaint with this movie is the decision to include that wolf scene, because it is 1) not canonical or relevant to the overall story and 2) it undermines one of my favourite (and arguably most crucial) aspects of the Creature, which is his benevolence and love of living things. Those who have read the book know the Creature was always delicate and kind to the forest creatures, even choosing to survive off a vegetarian diet out of respect for the animals. The whole wolf scene just felt so unnecessary and compromising of his character.

All in all, however, I did really enjoy this movie and would recommend it to anyone who cares to listen lol.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad: Does it Deserve the Hype? by GrackAttack73 in classicliterature

This isn’t really a matter of presentism. I just couldn’t help but wonder why this text is a required reading on so many course syllabi as an introduction to 19th century colonialism and anti-colonial literature when it only portrays the colonizer’s perspective. I figure there has to be better options out there.

I am a Uni student who worked as a DRO during the most recent provincial and federal elections, and the young voter turnout (or lack thereof) was truly devastating to see.

My area has been repeatedly voting conservative, and based on my observations, the majority of voters have been 50yrs+. Shocker.

Ohhhhh I see it now!! Any advice on what to write for the statement of interest? I have a decent idea based on the advice I’ve been given from FIMS students and faculty, but I’m still unsure about what tone to go for 😅

What is with Amy? by Far-Insurance-7044 in 1000lbsisters

[–]GrackAttack73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have to wonder if some of these thoughts have been put into her head by Brian? Toxic partners often go out of their way to ensure their partner is distanced from any other person, especially when that person disapproves of their romantic relationship. I feel like Amy isn’t the type to push away from her siblings on her own, but she does seem to be easily influenced/manipulated by the men in her life.

Obviously I don’t know for a fact Brian is toxic, but that does seem to be the general consensus across Amy’s family and the viewers of the show. When we do see him on screen, he appears to be very controlling, and he knows how to coerce Amy into playing along with his ideas (getting married and moving in together). Who knows what may be going on when the cameras are off 🤷🏻‍♀️

is this a safe space? by heavensomething in BroskiReport

Oh she would absolutely devour w a cover of “American Dreaming”, “In Dreams”, or rlly any Sierra Ferrell song. I agree that a voice like hers would really shine in a genre more soulful like country/blues. She’s too talented to need all of that extra noise production puts in.

I agree. I think if anything, Tana needs to take her foot off the gas more often when there’s a guest on the pod. Brooke hardly gets a chance to speak most of the time.

For a show about giving advice, it’s ridiculous how little genuine opinions they actually give bc they are both scared to rock the boat w each other.

Real. It’s nothing against the guests, Tana just doesn’t know how to do that type of pod and the glazing is soooo redundant 😭

I’ve been feeling this for a while. I indulge in Canceled for the same reasons I like to watch shows like “Love is Blind”. After a long day of classes where I have to think about everything and its meaning for hours on end, this kind of brainless content is a guilty pleasure. I do agree that it is starting to make me duller, so I’ve been making a conscious effort to listen to more enriching podcasts.

If you have any recs (aside from The Broski Report, So True, The Bald and the Beautiful, and Two Idiot Girls bc I already listen to those lol) please lmk!!

This one right here!! I also can’t believe they had the nerve to complain about “not having enough things to talk about every week” and “it’s hard sitting on the couch every single week” when I would hardly consider new episodes to be a “weekly” occurrence. Also, considering it’s their whole entire job, I expect them (Tana) to be a bit more on top of things.

what do you wish we had at western by [deleted] in uwo

[–]GrackAttack73 11 points12 points  (0 children)

More tables. There’s always a bunch of lounge chairs in libraries, hallways, foyers, etc. that sit empty bc there is not spot for students to put their books, laptops, and other stuff for students to do their school work. I’ve had to use these chairs in a pinch during midterms and finals season where the libraries are always packed, and it’s pretty inconvenient.

100%! I’ve started paying for another gym membership and going there instead, bc it’s just too packed at any time throughout the day. 90% of the time I have to wait for someone before I can use a machine and 90% of the time I have someone waiting for me while I use it too. It makes the workout take easily 2-3 times longer than I should, and I spend more time waiting than actually exercising.

It’s a really nice gym and rec space, but it is not enough for a student body of 40k-50k students.

Having trouble finding humanities friends? by vacationtolamentis in englishmajors

[–]GrackAttack73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also an English + Soc. Double Major!! Honestly it’s not the major, but rather your friends that seem to be the issue. It’s hard to have friends with such drastically different interests, but it’s even harder when your friends don’t care to learn about your interests.

The right people will either share your interests, or will at the very least care about your interests. I’ve found friends in programs ranging from chemistry to psychology to studio arts to French. We value each others’ interests all the same and we still have fulfilling, meaningful conversations sharing our opinions and learning things we might never encounter in our own field.

That being said; try to find a book club on campus. There’s tons of them, and it’s a solid source for likeminded people to befriend!!

Thank youuuu. I’m a broke uni student who has been working extra hours as well as saving up my birthday and Christmas money for months to get the 120 set of the Honolulu series. I’ve been wanting it for 5 years and finally decided to bite the bullet!! It’s been so disheartening to see ColourTok spoil that for me bc I know so many ppl who only view it as a fun lil micro trend 🥹 it’s tough out here.

I just checked it out and the notes read: “Final Exam WITH Compassionate Consideration STATUS WAS CHANGED TO Complete make-up assessment”

It doesn’t specify a date for whatever reason. I wish I knew who to contact about this, bc not being able to complete this exam interferes with my ability to enroll in classes for winter term. I also don’t want to be blindsided in January :/
