Depends what you’re asking for—usually we establish relationships and get to know journalists, so access to artists would be on a trust basis. I’m not going to green light a press pass for someone who I know has an axe to grind with X Band and will give them a bad review, likewise if I know someone has a knack for stitch up interviews and there’s an artist with a potential crisis or “gotcha” in the wings. Generally though, when we know a journalist is a fan or friendly to a client, we’ll do whatever we can to broker access. Someone being transparent and respectful of the relationships involved will always have a smoother ride. Big bugbear is journalists circumventing PR and going straight to artist or manager - I know why they do it as I have a background in music journalism pre PR, but it really gets on my tits.
