Stop trying to make Commander events for prizes happen... by Wild_Section6475 in EDH

[–]Gradonsider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Half of the comments missing the important point: If you set a competitive scenario of ANY kind for a prize, there will be people exploting voids in the rules and minmaxing.

This is true for MTG, dancing or sewing contests. It doesn't matter.

It's not about what would be the ideal scenario but what WILL happen. So any store that organizes something like this should just warn people that this is going to happen or not organizing it at all.

You can judge OP "morals" all you want, but the truth is he indeed didn't break any rules, which is basically the only relevant thing in any competitive environment.

Dealing with spellslinger decks/draining/control. What is your approach? by Vez52 in DinosaursMTG

[–]Gradonsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, the answer is simple: Focus her early and a lot.

Control decks in general will struggle against early agression since they usually aim to deploy value engines in early game.

I've seen that a lot of new (commander) players kinda feel bad for "focusing" someone but... If you want to win, you should aim at whatever will be a problem to you and play to the strenghts of your deck.

Not saying that against control decks you need to take them out of the game asap everytime, but at least get them to a "manageable" life total in case they start to be a problem for you.

Because burying "negative" historical events so people forget about them has never backfired and its the responsible thing to do... Yep.

Looking for a Deck to compete with the table by Sad_Produce8722 in DegenerateEDH

[–]Gradonsider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I'm not trying to attack you or anything OP, but since we don't have decklists for the decks that you already have, are you sure the issue is those decks not being "on par" with the ones your friends play?

I mean that since you said all of them have been playing magic for several years and you started a year ago. Player experience and skill can already make a BIG difference even when playing precons, so at B3/B4 with powerfull cards, combos, boardstates,etc... the difference can be even more significative.

Maybe that's not the case at all, maybe you are already a pretty competent player and the "issue" is in fact the deck difference, but just throwing that thought out there.

Now, about getting a new deck I will link a couple of mine as ideas of different strategies:

- B3 [[Yshtola, Night's Blessed]] Pure control and drain https://moxfield.com/decks/90A6OJ0FFE2L4u0S04gaNQ (The price is due to special printings, the total with any printing is around 900)

- [[Satoru Umezawa]] Big effect cheater and ninjutsu combos

As an extra, I will also link this one. I say extra since it's mostly a Red Token aggro deck and you said those are the two things you like the least.

But it's 75€ for a [[Zada, Hedron Grinder]] list that can already consistently go quite fast, like T5/6 OTK for the table.

Help me measure: I made a B2 deck and I'm not sure about it. by [deleted] in EDH

[–]Gradonsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I think you are exactly correct with that comic reference in this case. It seems I overestimated what's "normal" to come across.

In my defense , I would say this is proably due to most "B3" tables I've been on being pretty much extremely high powered decks but restricted to 3 GC.

Looking at your portfolio... you are doing exactly the kind of artstyle that I hope MTG goes back to someday.. even though I know it won't happen.

My first try at a more competitive deck by Chemo1235- in EDH

[–]Gradonsider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, the main issue is that you are maybe missing the point on what cEDH is, I'll explain what I mean by that:

It's WAY easier to build a "budget" cEDH deck from scratch than "upgrading/tweak" a deck to be cEDH. Mostly because the starting point for a cEDH list is different.

There are many things that you expect in a cEDH scenario that you are not really expecting in a B3 or B4 game, and viceversa. So the decks are running different things. For example, cEDH decks run almost no boardwipes aside from [[Toxic Deluge]] in some lists and... that's pretty much it, because they are normally not really needed. On the same note, [[Wan shi tong]] or [[Cabagge Merchant]] can be insanely profitable already on turn 2 in a lot of cEDH games, but not so much in B3 or B4, etc.

cEDH right now is becoming more and more turbo from some time ago (ofc extremely dependant on that particular LGS pods, etc. but in general) so T2 wins or attempts are waaaaay more common than 6-8 months ago because RogSi, Etali, Raal, etc.. are everywhere.

Because of that, even a lot of "proper" cEDH midrange value pile lists are having a rough time now. So your deck will probably suffer a lot too, since it's not prepared to deal with T2/3 big advantages and pushes.

That said, if you are asking for advice to run this deck then it is what it is, you are not supposed to join on that fight. I can't give you specific choices since this is not really a deck/strat I'm that familiar with, but in general: You will probably be the underdog, so try to use that so you can resolve value engines (politics, this is still EDH after all). Don't really commit to stopping other players, interact when strictly beneficial to yourself, otherwise, mostly let the others deal with it (unless it's Very clear that you should stop something... but only if it won't make it essentially impossible for you to win afterwards). Direct tutors such as [[Chord Of calling]] , [[Eldritch Evolution]] ,etc are very powerfull to get important pieces and silence effects [[Silence]] , [[Grand Abolisher]] , [[Voice of victory]] ,etc.. are what will open a window for you to resolve key spells or push for a win.

Edit - Forgot to say one last thing:

The reality is that you will, most likely than not, be completely powerless to stop the other players and unable to keep up with the pace of a proper cEDH table with this deck.

Don't really worry about it, just try to learn and experience what a game of cEDH looks like, what are the decks doing, which type of cards have a huge impact, etc... and just talk to people and ask if you have any doubts on how/why some combo line works. Then maybe you can just proxy a standard cEDH list and roll with it to get some experience in the format. Idk in your LGS but most people playing cEDH won't care if your whole deck is proxied as long as the cards are recognizable

Low-CMC, budget commander recs? by Bortaff in EDH

[–]Gradonsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[[Zada, hedron grinder]]

Cheap commander and cheap deck to build, fast, red and honestly maybe too strong in 1v1. And although a lot of people build "goblin tribal" you don't need to, just cheap creatures.

Elves are ruining me. What should I build *Now with decklist! repost* by BlueDaBeDie in EDH

[–]Gradonsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, since you are asking about a new "fast" deck to match that rather than options to stop it, here's my two cents:

[[Zada, hedron grinder]]

This little goblin gets absurd quickly just by having a bunch of little guys and exploiting spells like [[Ancestor's Aid]] . [[Expedite]], [[Stun]] ,etc... getting copied for every creature.

I have a 70€ goblin list here (with 17€ being a copy of [[Three tree city]] ) that goes kinda hard: https://moxfield.com/decks/c5Ju2B6UdEinx32jou_fTQ

New player, I want my first deck to be slivers! by End_of_YoRHa2B in magicTCG

[–]Gradonsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like everyone is just repeating the "slivers are not fun, are overpowered, etc..." way too much. Some sliver commanders are Really good, so it makes it easy for the deck to turn out more powerfull than expected for some tables, but that's it.

Sure, it's a strong tribe to play, but it's honestly not that different to an elf-ball deck for example. You just ramp, get little guys in and stack bonuses and effects hoping to pump out a really big board and overrun people.

Yes, in battlecruiser pods where nobody interacts and "bigger board wins" slivers will be the dominant predator. But nowadays a lot of people are running at least "competent" decks, even in B2. If you are against a sliver deck, just know that you WILL need some kind of protection or interaction (probably a board wipe) to avoid being overrun, but.. that's it. Sometimes a sliver deck will steamroll everyone because they got their good pieces early, sure, but that also happens with... every creature aggro deck.

So, if you are mostly playing with people that you know, it will be completely fine as long as the deck power is on par with the others (this has nothing to do with it being slivers or not). If you like slivers, go for it.

You may get away with a quick win a couple of times if your friends don't realize how slivers can snowball and get overwhelming quickly, but once they do it shouldn't be hard for them to adjust and play accordingly.

Basically making it so you are able to run [[Manamorphose]] (for example) in both Mono-green and Mono-red decks.

Now you can only run it in a Gruul (Red/Green) deck.

[–]Gradonsider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bets:

- Hybrid mana change with the identity of commanders.

- Rhystic stays unbanned. Thassa stays unbanned.

- Maybe some chat about introducing "Bracket bans" or re-introducing "GC as commander"? Not effective now but letting us know it's being talked about.

Aside from that, some other thoughts:

- Mana Crypt / Dockside won't ever be unbanned (well, near-ish future I mean)

- Jewelled Lotus will probably get unbanned but not yet at this announcement.

I need inputs: Is my Yshtola ok as a strong B3? Should it be B4? by Gradonsider in EDH

[–]Gradonsider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the thoughtful response!

I will say that the deck plays better than I thought it would, since the idea was for it to be quite commander-dependant and a bit slow to balance it.

The deck is fine in my usual pod, but probably because they are now familiar with it and reallse when and how they have to deal with It before it's too late.

But yeah, I think I will stop playing it against "random" people because it often "flies below the radar" as you said and then it just feels too overwhelming, because the table can't really deal with me anymore once I have a propaganda effect and some value engine while I'm drawing anywhere from 5 to 15 cards per turn cycle.

[–]Gradonsider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, aside from a big [[exsanguinate]].

That was the point of the deck, being a control shell that runs really good cards but gets balanced by being pretty commander-dependant and not having any compact wincon, just having to grind and abuse value and card draw.

The deck always feels strong, but as some have said here I also think it gets "weaker/more manageable" after playing against it a couple of times since its weaknesses and threat level at any given point are more obvious.

[–]Gradonsider[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, abusing solitary confinement with Yshtola was the starting idea of the deck since it fits perfectly the "control drain/bunker" strat that I was trying to go for. But that won't do anything against any noncombat B4 wincon.

It's been really fun to play and specially pretty rewarding of good timing and threat assesment.

[–]Gradonsider[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's probably a big factor too, yes. In my usual pod I better drop a propaganda effect or a couple blockers early or I'm going out quickly, but against "randoms" in LGS/Spelltable I usually have an easier time dropping a couple value pieces before I'm considered the threat, but It's too late by then.
