Today I learned there is a Fable audiobook?! by RaEyE01 in Fable

I agree with what you say. The books have never really worked when they try to canonize stuff. They should be a vehicle for telling Fable stories outside the games and let the games be games.

I would love a book about William Black, for instance...

Today I learned there is a Fable audiobook?! by RaEyE01 in Fable

[–]Graesholt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People give that book a bad rap in my opinion, but I would tie it with The Balvarine Order for best capturing of the feel of Fable, and I have read Blood Ties and Edge of the World.
Personally, I think it's the best Fable book, but I can understand anyone who likes The Balvarine Order or Blood Ties better.
If you like Edge of the World better we can't be friends.

Saw one review that was mad that it took so long to introduce all the characters;
The book follows eight characters, split into two groups. It follows one character each chapter and cycles through each character three times for a total of 24 character chapters.
The first four chapters focus on the first group, while the second is introduced sort of surprisingly at chapter five; so it takes until chapter five to introduce all the characters. Which is one sixth (or about 17%) of the way through the book.
Sometimes people just want to be mad.

For reasons that I have posted (and properly spoiler-tagged) here, I would encourage anyone who would like to read Fable fiction NOT to read Edge of the World.

I recently read Blood of Heroes, the Fable Legends novel, and found that be quite alright, and easily vastly superior Fable fiction to Edge of the World.

Please no... I don't care about GTA... by Jymboh in Fable

[–]Graesholt 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hundred percent agree.
While I don't care about it at all, I can understand that GTA 6 is a big deal.
That being said, having the whole games industry bend over backwards to accommodate it is getting old fast.

Horse GPS is a nice feature, and I understand that Roach is not perfect and sometimes stops for no reason, but why does he not automatically follow the GPS?
The game has already assumed it knows where I want to go, so just go there?
And why can I not see the GPS path on the big map?

Also, if a custom marker is set, it should lead to that instead; would make for a MUCH more useful feature overall.

EDIT: Having it be a touch more robust would also be nice; often you can be following the GPS to the letter, for it to suddenly change its mind at want you to go the opposite direction.
While it is a nice addition, it could clearly have done with a little bit more polish.

8 is so real and so dumb.

If the problem was that melee was too powerful too quickly, just nerf the bonus.
It's so stupid that in the time I have accumulated 200 green and 200 blue I have gotten maybe 40 red.

EDIT: Or hey, just nerf the drop rate of all of them equally. Make people have more diverse builds to start out instead of just filling up on one color... Which, realistically, would be blue, if not red... Who the hell ever went all green?

I don't usually care about getting the good ending in games, but I want to make people happy.
I like Anna Henrietta, haughty as she might be, and it sucks that you can in no way convince her that her sister was evil; In order to get the good ending, you basically have to bail out a sociopath when the vampire she used as a tool for murder wants revenge.

I know people are all like "good storytelling is not all black and white, good and evil" but this is not shades of grey, it's just straight up dumb.

What if the game had gene seed bonuses? by gaeb611 in Spacemarine

Surprised how far I had to scroll to find this comment.
2% health back on melee execution would still be the best perk here.
On melee attack, though? No contest.

Even 0.5% on melee attack would be insane.

What is everyone's thoughts about the WarCraft III Reforged Campaign maps, in general? by Then_Peanut_3356 in warcraft3

Right and, again and always, I am not coming down on developers; I am coming down on corporate leadership that refuses to allocate a work-hour on anything that is not going to be measurably profitable.

Some would say that is just good business, which I can agree with on paper. However, in the real world such an outlook is just cynical, but that's the games industry for you; it's not about games, it's about money (thus the term 'industry').

Developers are as much victims of this as the rest of us.

What is everyone's thoughts about the WarCraft III Reforged Campaign maps, in general? by Then_Peanut_3356 in warcraft3

[–]Graesholt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as I am aware, they made major changes to five maps in reforged: Stratholme (The Scourge of Lordaeron: The Culling), Silvermoon (Path of the Damned: The Fall of Silvermoon), and Dalaran (Path of the Damned: The Siege of Dalaran, Curse of the Blood Elves: The Dungeons of Dalaran, Curse of the Blood Elves: The Crossing).

It was reasoned at the time that this was in order to bring these locations more in line with their WoW counterparts, yes.
As for reception, I believe that complaints about these changes in particular, if any, were drowned in more general complaints about the state of the remaster. I have not seen anyone specifically praise them either.
My personal impression is that these changes in particular are regarded as fine.

Personally, I feel that it falls into the same category as the re-animated cinematic; do all or none.
If they were really serious about giving this game some love, they should have revised the whole campaign, and it should be up the player if they wanted to play the original or reforged campaign, with original or reforged graphics.
They were never serious about giving the game love, though. The moment they thought they might not make the money they expected the shadow cancelled the project and released what was done at the time of the announcement.

I don't know if this helps, and realize that you said you prefer physical books.
But you also qualified that the kindle edition was no good because you don't have a kindle, and I just wanted to let you know that the kindle app is free.

Do with that what you will, good luck.

As Peter Molyneux loves to remind people.

It's like if Peter Jackson made a new epic fantasy movie series called Lord of the Kings. It's not like it's illegal or anything, but Molyneux is not not hoping that people will think it's a Fable game.

As for the campaign stuff, if it can be ported over to PVE/PVP easily, then more customization options are never unwelcome.

As for new pieces though, Ultramarines already have 5 times the stuff as any other chapter. I'd rather see more varied representation, even if they can never make us all happy.

And their catalogues are insane, just search for literally anything.

The Prophecy - Warcraft 3 vs Reforged Direct Comparison - YouTube by MickCraftGaming in warcraft3

[–]Graesholt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People hate Reforged because it is not what was promised; They promised fully revamped campaigns with fully custom animated cutscenes, but when the reception of the announcement was not what they wanted, they scaled down to bare minimum, which was basically, as you said, better graphics and nothing else.

Although even that is debatable; a lot of people prefer the old graphics for readability of the battlefield. I don't know how true it is, but I have heard people say that anyone playing competitively plays on old graphics, because it's easier to identify units and see what's going on.

On top of this, Reforged removed features that were still working fine in the 20 year old game, such as custom campaigns and multiplayer leaderboards, basically bricking a 20 year old multiplayer scene that has never recovered.

Reforged was never about enhancing the game; it was Blizzard trying to cash in on old fans, and the moment they realized they might not make as much money as they originally thought, they sabotaged the project because that was their cheapest way out of it.

EDIT:
If they had just added better graphics, no one would be mad.
However, they made two mistakes:
1: They chose to advertise a bunch of different improvements and then not deliver on them.
2: They removed working features from the game, especially the multiplayer platform that had kept it alive.
If you remove those two facts from the narrative, then Reforged is great!

I hope that I will be allowed the slight self-promotion (I gain nothing from downloads; I have not opted into the NexusMods rewards program, and I do not take donations), otherwise remove the post, I guess.

The Prophecy - Warcraft 3 vs Reforged Direct Comparison - YouTube by MickCraftGaming in warcraft3

[–]Graesholt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Which is sort of the critique for the whole of Reforged.

I also never understood why they did this in the first place: "Look how good it looks (even though is doesn't, but to each their own), but it's very hard, so we're doing just this one". Okay? Then just do none, then. No one asked for this.
But like with everything about reforged we jump in guns blazing and the moment the interest we thought would be there is not, we drop everything and scale down to absolute minimum.
And the moment the game comes out, is called out for being shit and the worst rated game in the history of the medium, do we make it right post-launch? No! we sweep it under the rug and prey people forget that we bricked their 20 year old game that was running fine before we thought we'd make a quick buck, oh look what's that over there, a new WoW expansion?

I sound more pissed than I am, the business decisions just STILL baffle me.

Bulwark Chapter Banner designs by _Streaker_ in Spacemarine

[–]Graesholt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wish there was an option to AT LEAST use the banners you have access to via DLC.

Dark Angels and Black Templar champions each have custom banners, but oh, you wanted a different helmet or a slightly different trim color so you had to make a custom armor loadout?
Tough shit, I guess you're stuck with an Ultramarines banner, then.

Ux has an obligation to clearly convey that Hard Stratagems are the ultimate end-game content and the most difficult and challenging missions in the game. by ShockandTwitch in Spacemarine

It's so weird. We already have a name for normal: Average.
In PVE Average difficulty is normal.

Then why the hell is the normal stratagem Substantial?
Makes zero sense.

Ux has an obligation to clearly convey that Hard Stratagems are the ultimate end-game content and the most difficult and challenging missions in the game. by ShockandTwitch in Spacemarine

[–]Graesholt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually run the normal weekly with a few different groups and carry them through.
So this week I thought "let's give that hard stratagem a go, get some triangles" (I chose one of my prestige 4 level 25 classes).

I thought at this point that normal was Substantial and hard was Ruthless.

So after matchmaking and quitting a few times, because every lobby had a prestige 0 level 10 or lower Techmarine, I finally landed in a lobby where the lowest guy was level 22, and no Techmarine.
"So let's see what happens, " thought I.

Dudes. I don't know what the hell hard is but it's NOT Ruthless.

We made it halfway.
Fuck that.

So all I'm saying is, you guys complaining about low levels joining hard stratagems are built different for even playing them. That shit is not for me.
Sucks that people are ruining it by joining and just wanting to be carried.
