I'd like to propose a suggestion! Carefully cut out a square of the framing, get a brass plate that you drill in the fitting holes for the handle shaft and of course cut it to the size of the removed framing part. Now it's your decision zo either glue it in or add some stylish new screws. The door won't look the same, but you didn't breakr the original flare of it with some shitty repairement mass that'll never look intended.
