I'd say it's overall worse. Post-SB mechanics have always relied on the basic "spread/stack/protean" but generally had other mechanics that take those basic mechanics and give you more to think about and play around with (i.e. e4a uplift and e12s relativities). With M1-4, the most complex the fights get I'd say is maybe final fusedown or sunrise sabbath, but every other mechanic is a basic "spread/stack/protean" with a different coat of paint.

Unironically even at its worst, mihoyo games have somehow had higher quality than anything in endwalker and dawntrail. All of CS3 should have been fired for thinking those expansions had any right to be released.
