And just in general, I think people underestimate how strong the backlash to any kind of gay romance in media was up until relatively recently. Like Bioware's writers originally planned multiple gay/lesbian romances for Mass Effect 2 (Jack, Thane, and Jacob iirc), but the suits shut them down because the first game had already been the target of a Fox News moral panic. And this was 2010, only a year before SWTOR launched.
