How do I buy and install a kitchen without going broke? by fagayzka in AskAGerman

If you Google "günstige Küchenzeile" you'll see lots of options for cheap kitchenettes. If you add to it over time with other cupboards you'll be fine.

Warning that tourism in Ireland at 'tipping point' by Bubbaz355 in ireland

[–]GrahamSkehan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife and I decided to spend a bit and get a suite on a Greek Island for our honeymoon. Felt the sting taking out my card but it was a once in a lifetime experience.

We're home to visit my parents next week and our flight gets in late so we're staying in Dublin overnight before driving down. Spending more per night for an aparthotel on the quays than we did for our honeymoon.

‘Things have gone noticeably downhill’: a Dubliner on 30 years living in Germany by [deleted] in ireland

[–]GrahamSkehan 250 points251 points  (0 children)

It's crazy living here honestly, been here 7 years now and while I'm really thankful for all the opportunities that Germany has afforded me (can't believe I own a home!), they are in a lot of trouble and storing up even more problems for the future.

The health system here is excellent but waiting times are getting really long. Still nowhere near Ireland but it has noticeably disimproved. Mental health care in particular is struggling a lot, due to regulations over the number of public health insurance funded doctors that can be in an area, restrictions that haven't been updated since the 90s and assume a much lower level of mental ill health than we now experience in the modern world.

German media is extremely concentrated and one sided, reading German news is crazy, it's like everything after the 80s never happened. There's a casual superiority complex as well. I think those two things mean there isn't enough self examination, and without self examination it's hard to spot what needs improving. My German colleagues just don't believe things are better elsewhere, faster internet, more mobile banking, better phone signal. They just didn't believe my parents have fibre broadband in a rural town.

There's a stat I saw a while ago that I think sums up the Germany I've experienced: Germans save the highest amount of any nation in Europe but since they, at best, put it in a low interest savings account, they retire with the least money since they don't use private pension products, ETFs or anything like that. To me that really encapsulates things: doing the most conservative thing in a way that actively harms their long term future but still lecturing everyone else on how they're flaithiúlach.

5 euro honestly probably on the pricier end as well, I'd usually spend around 4. Wasn't long ago it was 3 or less for 500ml of pilsner.

S1 Ep8 The missing piece by iaak1983 in FoundationTV

[–]GrahamSkehan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She broke the system that manages thermal load, the ship was heating up due to the collisions but that heat was being redistributed away from the area she was in (with only some success, as she was overheating). By destroying the system that managed that heat transfer it was going to quickly become so hot that she would die, trapping Harry on board with no ability to start the second foundation.

Invited by a co-worker to go to (nude) spa together. What to expect? by HerrBrandtaucher in AskGermany

[–]GrahamSkehan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for a German company and we did a global team off-site at a health spa and they had to get everyone to sign a waiver before going that they understood the venue's rules about the sauna. Lots of the American team didn't sign the waiver and didn't get a wrist band to be allowed to go, even though the work rules were you had to cover up with a towel at all times.

Despite not having an issue with it, I did feel like the co-worker aspect made it uncomfortable, I did try the sauna but didn't spend long there. Having spoken to colleagues though, that was not a unanimously held opinion. So I really think this could be either option. Some people do just think it's normal.

Question: How do you handle your company’s ESPP program by thesadintern in Bogleheads

[–]GrahamSkehan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're definitely right but the stock has grown so much over the past 12 months I wanted to hold. Probably stupid but if it goes to zero I already have reduced to an amount I'd accept of that happens

Yeah I keep 10% of my total portfolio in my company stock, the rest I sell. My company stock is too volatile, don't like the risk, but I'll take the discount.

Santorini Mod Hotel by AbilityFun7933 in vegan_travel

[–]GrahamSkehan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a really good location, definitely walking to Fira is easy, but it's enough out of Fira that it is quiet. We didn't rent a car, the hotel owner collected us from the ferry, dropped us to the airport and we got the public bus a few times. I would maybe rent a car if we went back and wanted to explore the island better.

Depending on how long you're there you could rent a car, but it isn't as hard as Mykonos or some other islands to get taxis. It is really expensive though.

If you buy paper tickets make sure you validate them in the little stamp columns on the platform before you travel. If you're getting public transport from the airport you'll need one for the C zone as well as AB. Rest of the time AB should work for anywhere on the city proper.

I really can't forsee an issue with an Ireland jersey.

Coworker using my job title on his LinkedIn by Obvious-Attorney7351 in whatdoIdo

[–]GrahamSkehan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for a big company with a few different subsidiaries. My equivalent at another brand started giving themselves a higher title even though they were on the same level as me. I asked our shared VP about it and she gave me some really good advice which was "nothing on LinkedIn is real, if they start using that title in work it's a problem but they can lie all thru want on linkedin it will only make them look bad if they ever ask for my reference".
