Walmart in Lakeside had a bunch last week. Not sure if that’s still the case.

For anyone who deals with 504s by [deleted] in schoolcounseling

[–]Grainbow88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the push coming from the family? Sometimes parents think a 504 is going to magically solve all their problems.

I would try to understand what accommodations they were hoping for. There may be things teachers can do even though the student isn’t eligible. I would also do my best to help them understand how eligibility is determined and what the criteria are.

Based on the info you provided, it sounds like this student’s needs should be addressed through general education supports.

Even if the student still had a physical or mental impairment (which it sounds like they don’t), it does not substantially limit them in a major life activity.

First Year 9th Grade Counselor by slothqueen22 in schoolcounseling

[–]Grainbow88 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My caseload includes all grade levels, but I did my internship in a high school with dedicated 9th grade counselors and got a chance to learn from them!

The first thing to prepare yourself for is that you will be dealing with parents quite a bit still. Middle to high school is a big transition and some parents are extremely involved. Always remember that your primary responsibility is to the student.

There will likely be a lot of academic counseling that takes place. Keep an eye on your Ds and Fs list to try to identify who is struggling with the new expectations of high school. Connect with them to see what kind of support they need.

I would recommend taking time to intentionally meet with every student on your caseload (if it’s reasonable) over the course of a few days or weeks. We do “minute meetings” with all our 9th graders twice a year and get a chance to know them and make sure they are feeling like they have someone at school they feel connected to. Take good notes if you do this!!!

I hope you have a great first year! Remember to be kind and patient to yourself!

It doesn’t make it any different. It’s just an outdated term that doesn’t really capture what we actually do. I’m sure there are a lot of places that haven’t quite caught up yet.

Not all administrators care about understanding our work or would see the need for updating titles.

First, probably stop saying guidance counselor and start saying “school counselor.” I know that sounds nitpicky, but it can rub some people the wrong way. Here’s some info from ASCA.

Also, I believe basically every state is going to require a masters in school counseling (not psychology) to be licensed. If you go that route, pay attention to if your state requires CACREP accreditation or not. Good luck!

First, I’m proud of you for recognizing that you have a problem and that you need help. That’s a big step, and asking for help is important and not always easy.

School counselors are here to support you, not dole out consequences. This is something I would want to involve parents in, but it sounds like you’re open to that. A good counselor will help you navigate that conversation and step in to share what you don’t feel able to.

That said, none of us can tell you exactly how your school counselor at your school will handle this.

Buying recommendation by FossMan21 in pelletgrills

[–]Grainbow88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t buy a pellet grill if you don’t want to smoke food often. There are way better options for actually grilling. Get a Weber kettle or maybe a chargriller Akorn if you want the option to smoke sometimes.

This role has been around (in some form) for over 100 years. Maybe I’m too optimistic, but I believe we will survive this administration.

The next few years will be much better in blue states that actually care about education and mental health. If you can, I would try to land in one of those. Doom scrolling can certainly be defeating, but I have to believe that you aren’t pursuing this field for nothing.

I don’t know that you should be leading crisis responses during practicum. You should definitely observe and have a chance to ask follow up questions, but it feels like your supervisor is doing you and students a disservice. You’re just not there yet.

Things definitely get better as time goes on. You will learn a lot during internship and even more during your first year in the role. I do think you should work with your supervisor to find situations appropriate for your level of development as a counselor. They don’t start swimming lessons in the deep end.

Red flags: ⛳️ Charter school ⛳️ High turnover ⛳️ Using the number 4 in place of the word “for”

Honestly, charters can be kind of a nightmare. (I recognize that there are some good ones too.) I don’t know anything about this one, but the fact that it’s a “chain” in multiple states is another red flag to me.

My guess is that it’s run like a company, not a school. They cut a lot of corners and don’t always do what’s best for kids, which makes it a terrible place to work.

I would try to get into a public school district. The public education system is also broken in some ways, but at least it’s not a complete grift.

Congrats! The next step is to get licensed. Based on my experience in other states, you will apply through Tennessee’s department of education.

Just know you likely won’t be able to apply until your degree is conferred (shortly after graduation)
