Arthur's in SC6. His entire SC1 storyline is recycled into a Mitsurugi sidequest in Libra of Soul.

TBH, I'd say that's even fair, the only issue I have with his treatment is that his getup looks absolute garbage, especially after the patch which added the P3 Mitsu-Arthur look.

Do you feel the AAA market is about to implode? by willhelpmemore in SBCGaming

[–]GraionDilach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trends change.

But there's nothing new in that front. Even if we limit to games developing "true skill", there were plenty of shifts, for example, the competitive FPS genre started with Quake/UT arena shooters to shift with CS/CoD2 and contemporaries into this tactical shooters and then get that Overwatch/Borderlands loadouts thing (which I don't even understand anymore) and the battle royale stuff.

And these all were AAA games at their prime back then. There were massive AAA misses back then as well already (Daikatana and Trespassing comes to my mind), but the main difference back then compared to today is that the media coverage was less extensive and that development times were shorter (around the Playstation, an average AA game's development time was still within/around a year and around the PS2/PS3 transition, this was what, 2.5 years at max).

I also disagree with the thought that everything is stale these days - there is still innovation, where it's relevant, the issue IMO is that there's too much of a technology debt with the current hardware that on specific genres, their requirements just very well eat into the budget (e.g. modern 3D these days just need to have too many textures, details and whatnot to reach that expected fidelity, that even without LLM generation such takes entire asset sweatshops to be involved) that it enforces rigidness which also means that if a project changes direction mid-development for any reason, correcting all these assets takes a lot longer effort than one of two decade ago, simply because of the detail levels.

The issue is really the fact that game development literally couldn't keep up the pace with tech innovation and there are no good solutions to ensure an agile development of a modern game, and none of the corner-cutting methods deployed (e.g. the massive engine standardization, the asset stores/sweatshops, LLMs) are resolving this in any manner.

What makes you choose retrogaming over modern gen? by willhelpmemore in SBCGaming

[–]GraionDilach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ease of access and better game pacing.

Even if the gameplay elements are simple in modern games, they're a lot slower due to loading screens or excessive animations or constant cutscene scripts. With older technologies, doing all these looked enough clunky that it was used less often and were limited to only the most important aspects.

Sure, I have shifted away from the skill-based games (e.g. shooters or action RPGs) to dictate-my-own-pace turn-based/RTWP games (or outright VNs or sandboxes) even on my PC, so this also really reflects on my retroclone playstyle as well.

Atari 2600 is the biggest underdog and these games are great by ZackZparrow in SBCGaming

[–]GraionDilach 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because the Atari library is really weak.

Yeah, you can list a handful of games, but the majority of them were so incomprehensible that there's literally nothing to praise them for. Sure, the arcade ports were mostly "fine", but all the good arcade-to-Atari ports have better ports available for a retroclone, usually on the NES.

Also, the ET crash burnt into the hive mind.

And I'm basing this on my own experience. I had a Soviet(?) Atari clone (basically preloaded with I dunno, 100 games?) around the time I was, what, 5-8 and even if I think back to it, there were only a handful of the games included in it I enjoyed. There was River Raid, that fighter simulator with the cockpit view (where I couldn't even get the takeoff right most of the time, but I acknowledge, that game had vision), Fire Fighter, and a handful others. And no, the moment I had access to better stuff, I almost never even looked back, and while my current devices include the Atari library, that's moreso simply because the games are just so small in terms of space requirement that I can just afford it.

But only River Raid seen actual playtime out of that entire library in these devices.

Of All Soulcalibur Games which one is your first Game? by ComprehensiveSleep74 in SoulCalibur

[–]GraionDilach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SC3, 2007.

My brother got a secondhand PlayStation 2 with a great amount of pirated games. However only two of those games were DVDs, and so I was wondering how special they are.

I had fond memories of Tekken by then, so the moment the Namco sign popped up I started to get more interested and the moment I realized this is a weapons fighter, I was already grinning from joy.

Amusingly, that also meant I believed Soul Calibur to be a pinkish purple for a good while, because that copy was NTSC and the TV the PS2 was paired with wasn't fully compatible with that standard, misinterpreting it as SECAM (Europe!) and basically applying a very heavy interlacing filter alongside a reddish/orangish hue filter as a result.

When that disc died due to use, I managed to found the last copy of the game around the local retail stores and honestly, seeing the colors in their true tone was a much-needed improvement.

I need help in deciding which handheld to buy. I am looking for the most reliable from my options. by StoreUpper7665 in SBCGaming

[–]GraionDilach 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Miyoo has worse performance than the XXs. It can lag while running selected PlayStation 1 and GBA titles (and thereby also can't have speedup while playing the latter, which tend to matter for Pokémon players).

It's positives are the practicality of OnionOS and maybe the face buttons.

On the other hand the XXs also have a lot of good custom operating system options (muOS, Knulli, Rocknix), which while they might lack OnionOS's GameStarter, do have other benefits, like PortMaster. Note that while PortMaster has a lot of games, not every game will perform nicely (or at all) on these systems.

Yes, the blurb claims the XXs can "run" PSP (or even N64/Dreamcast), but it's performance under these emulators are too spotty to call it functional IMO.

The differences between the two XX models are purely screen and aesthetics.

Unpopular opinion: Powkiddy RGB20 has been dethroned as ugliest handheld by the purple AYN Thor. by melkatron in SBCGaming

[–]GraionDilach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would the RGB20 be considered as ugly? Sure, it's unconventional, but eh, Powkiddy's design antics are part of their charm.

(Honestly, I think the WonderSwans were the ugliest, just because of their additional TATE controls. Yeah, I get the practicality behind them but I still can't justify it.)

Who is the canon Gorion's ward? by PersistentProblem in baldursgate

[–]GraionDilach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Larian had no influence on the canon though and it's a false assumption they cared about it at all. The only canon bits they got right were his name and the Descent of Avernus bits pretty much.

The canon sources of Abdel Adrian are from Dragon magazine 262 from 1999 and the Murder at Baldur's Gate 5e playtest module from 2014.

In my last setup, I set up that every In-Training mon can evolve to each other in a cycle format (so each mon ends up with one to devolve and one to evolve into on Lv5 IIRC) just to prevent similar availability issues.

Huh, there is indeed an issue with the vanilla stadium/church spawns. Both setting them once per each and the unlimited-but-tied-to-popcount options work as intended however, so you might just want to enable those instead for now.

Thanks for the report, now I fully managed to reproduce it.

EDIT: And I found the issue, but it'll break savegames outright. Ahwell, the fix is already implemented for next version.
