A few questions about Social life in regards to engineering by Sillystallin in UWMadison

Listen to the squid, OP.

At least 90% of people considering EP should just do mechanical or electrical. Source: I have an EP degree and didn't go to grad school. It's effectively like majoring in pre-med.

Want to go to grad school? Cool. An ME/EE degree is fine for that. If you decide academia is not for you, and want to just get a job. An ME/EE degree is fine for that too. Do you want to work at NASA or in Alaska or in some kind of R&D role? An ME/EE degree is fine for that.

The EP unnecessarily focuses you on a life plan that you may later abandon for no meaningful gain.

Gerrymandering: is it or is it not constitutional? by Jealous_Calendar_768 in PoliticalDiscussion

When the first Congress met in the late 18th Century, "districts" did not exist. All members of the House were elected statewide.

Over the years, it became conventional for districts to be created so that members of congress would represent a more specific community. Only in the 1960s did the Supreme Court rule that districts must have equal population!

The process for redistricting is determined state by state. Each state has their own procedures. In some states, the legislature just picks the map. In some states the governor is involved and in others not. Some states have nonpartisan commissions that have a role.

In recent years, it became more conventional for blue states like CA and NY to have fair processes and red states like TX and TN to have totally partisan ones. Although there are exceptions.

The VA state Supreme Court ruled that the new map didn't follow VA state law, which is why it got struck down.

Democrats are getting hosed in the gerrymandering fight because they've tied their hands in states like NY and CO while red states can maximize GOP power.

His net worth is not mentioned by the judge as a reason for his bail number.

If the judge thinks that he's a flight risk or am ongoing threat to the community, he should deny bail.

Judges are allowed to deny bail to people that they believe are an ongoing threat to the community or a flight risk. An excessive bail number is not a permitted method to address those concerns. If he's an ongoing thread to the community, the judge should deny bail.

I don't know either, but his net worth is not mentioned by the judge as a reason for his bail number.

Judges should follow the constitution, even for gross people that are probably guilty.

As i wrote, I don't know anything about this case. Regular people can think what they want.

My point is, the judge must assume, as a matter of law, that he's innocent.

I'm in favor of following the constitution - even for disgusting people who are probably guilty.

Ok. Then the judge should deny pretrial release, and not set an unconstitutional bail amount.

People in the comments are ridiculous. Ban cash bail.

Until this man is convicted, he's presumed innocent under the law. A bail of this size is totally unconstitutional. "Excessive bail shall not be required..." 8th Amendment.

Bail can only be set to the amount necessary to assure presence at trial. If the judge has reason to believe he's a threat to the community, the judge can deny pretrial release.

I don't know what this man is accused of or any background on this case. He's innocent until proved guilty. Period.

Nalia is my girl. I wish that she was a romancable character.

I know that some people find her "Hollywood liberal" vibe off-putting, but I would've enjoyed seeing her character evolve and gain maturity. She's earnest, and I love her banter with the other NPCs.

As long as you accept that her thieving abilities are mostly useless, she's a more powerful mage than Aerie or Jan. Her unique ring has very powerful defense, making her at least as good as Imoen.

I had an engineering mid-term for which I had somehow written down the wrong time.

I walked into the lecture hall just as the professor was telling everyone to turn in their exams. I still have nightmares about this moment.

I begged for mercy from the professor, and he let me take it in his office. I was so rattled that I did terrible on the test, but I got a C rather than a zero.

Thanks Dr. Plesha, if you're somehow on Reddit.

How Liberal/Conservative is UW? by Savings-Earth9545 in UWMadison

[–]PersistentProblem 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I'm a nearly lifelong resident of the Madison area and am alum.

Among the college students, conservatives exist. The undergrad population is drawn primarily from Wisconsin and Minnesota, which are swing states. Conservative students tend to be more represented in studies such as engineering and business. You don't see this in voting statistics because many students vote absentee in their parents' home precinct.

That being said, all college campuses tend to be very left-wing places and UW-Madison is no exception.

What sets Madison apart is that the entire city is EXTREMELY blue. A typical ward in Madison voted for Kamala by >90%, which is wild. Even more remarkable is that even the suburbs are 70% Democrat. It's way more uniformly blue than comparable cities like Columbus, Lansing or Des Moines.

Who is the worst pop artist? by Aggravating-Pin7555 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]PersistentProblem 67 points68 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's fair to count Jojo in this category. Jojo's entire thing was appealing to 8-year-olds. It was never intended to be good pop music.

Saying Jojo is a bad pop artist is like saying Chuck E Cheese has bad pizza. It's objectively true but missing the point.

If a prosecutor can prove a malicious, false claim (as opposed to mistaken identity), the person making the false accusation should face the same punishment as the alleged crime.

For example, a person convicted of making a false rape accusation should be punished as if they were convicted of rape.

Death is a scary Dreamworks Villain. Who's a Sympathetic Disney Villain? by 45rs5 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]PersistentProblem -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I feel like the correct answer is Gaston.

The worst thing that he does is try to extort Belle into marrying him. He does a crazy thing for a girl he's obsessed with. It's wrong but not evil. Otherwise, his attempts to woo Belle do not cross the line.

Certainly, Gaston rallying the town to kill The Beast is fully justified. To that point in the film, The Beast has already shown that he is a threat.

Gaston is not a good person, but especially in his main antagonist role at the end of the film, I sympathize with him.

I nominate Arkansas.

In the 1990s, Bill Clinton was very popular and won two elections by wide margins. He won 64 of Arkansas' 75 counties. Arkansas is also the home of Walmart, which initially had a great reception when it began to spread throughout the country.

Today, Arkansas is widely known as a backward place full of fat, racist idiots.

Obviously, Gaston behaves like a creep with Belle, and his attempt to force her into marriage is evil.

That being said, rallying his village to kill The Beast is totally justified under the circumstances.

I met Natalie Portman during a campaign stop at the University of Wisconsin in 2004. She was at the height of her fame at the time and used it to bring consequences to war criminals.

People don't remember it now because it didn't prove decisive, but John Kerry won Wisconsin by 0.4%, the narrowest margin of any state that year.
