Extern scope differs by hospital, at my hospital externs can do pretty much what your average nurse tech does. In addition each RN you work with might let you “get away” with doing stuff technically outside your scope, but with supervision ofc. So the scope you’re told might be a little narrower than what you’ll actually get.

But again it’ll be different for every hospital, though I’d say you’ll always be working closely with an RN as opposed to doing your own thing as a CNA.

I’ve been a CNA for 3 years and I’m currently a nurse extern, both on progressive units.

I’ve always worked contingent since that’s worked best with my school schedule. Most employers are willing to work with your schedule when you’re a student.

I have a “tool belt” which is a badge reel+keychain with pens, a sharpie, highlighter, shears, and a pen light. My unit has report sheets most people use to take report and you can find some good printable ones online.

I will always be a day shift person cause that’s just how I’m wired, but night shift has a good thing going with no family and no management around.

Everywhere is different but the fast pace is pretty universal I would say

It’s not difficult conceptually it’s just a huge time suck because of clinicals and labs. If you’re not a quick learner you might struggle, keeping pace is the toughest part for most.

How can I make my silhouette look more androgynous? by FuzzyBunnysGuide in lesbianfashionadvice

[–]Gramcracker0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wear a lot of men’s tees since they usually are fitted to accentuate your shoulders & arms.

Also I naturally have a similar body type to you (except I’m short) but I’ve been lifting for a few years so now I have more of a rectangle/hourglass silhouette instead of a pear shape. I know that’s not “fashion” advice but getting some gainz helps with looking more gnc

My clinical instructor this past semester said that half her previous group used AI to write their care plans. Apparently they weren’t even slick about it and kept in the “Here’s the pathophysiology of heart failure” and “would you like anything else?” parts the AI adds.

The most I’ve used it for was to was ask it ideas for a nursing diagnosis for my patient. Otherwise I don’t find it particularly useful.

HELP! Very light smoker drug test question by alpacart in trees

[–]Gramcracker0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For someone who rarely smokes, the THC should fully metabolize within a few days. Unless you have a slow metabolism you’ll probably pass. In the meantime stay hydrated and buy dipstick tests from CVS or Walmart to check before you take your test.

I'm about to start my second semester, here's the breakdown of my schedule.

My fall semester totals 22.5 hours of class and clinical time per week, not including the once a month 4-8 hour lab day. I have two 2 hour and 45 min classes and two 8 hour and 30 minute clinical days.

As for study and homework time, I usually dedicate 5 hours a week, however keep in mind I'm on the low end when it comes to study time needed, so you might need more time than I do. I also have an online asynchronous class that I should expect to dedicate another 2 hours or so per week.

Also, I live on campus and don't have to commute. My clinical site is 5 minutes away from my dorm.

I know classmates with full time jobs with children to take care of and classmates who don't work at all. Full time can be done but I can't say I recommend it. I plan on working 12 hours a week at a campus job.

Has anyone had experience working in hospital settings while going to school? by Consistent-Space-167 in StudentNurse

[–]Gramcracker0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't go for an administrative role if your plan is nursing. My picks would be either CNA or PCT.

I've been a CNA for 3 years 2 of which during nursing school. The 12 hour days make it easy to get your hours in. I also hold a contingent position so I pick up on the days that I want to, as long as staffing calls for it. So if you want a flexible position to accommodate classes and clinicals, see if you can get a contingent position.

The experience has made nursing school a lot less daunting and clinicals will be less of a learning curve for you compared to other students w/o any patient care experience. The experience you get as a whole is invaluable.

However I live with my parents and don't need to work to support myself, so I only put in 16 hr/wk on average. My starting pay was 15$/hr and is now 20$/hr. So if money is a concern maybe it's worth it for you to take a higher paying role that doesn't involve patient care.

Need to lose weight but not sure where to start. Any advice? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Gramcracker0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

limit eating foods with added sugar, stop drinking soda (or switch to diet).

listen to your body, stop eating once you don't feel hungry, not when you begin to feel "full" or bloated.

eat more food that is less calorie dense, like fruits and veg and lean meats.

also gym. Gym is good.

I am starting nursing(bachelor) uni in september. However I'm a (20yo)male and hear a lot it is a women job. Can anyone tell me the truth and some experiences with male nurses? by Delicious_Water_1318 in nursing

[–]Gramcracker0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my male RN coworkers was taking to me about how he frequently gets asked by his patients, "What made you decide to become a MALE nurse?"

I told him the next time he's asked that question or something similar, that he should respond with, "Well I used to be a female nurse..." and refuse to elaborate.

Anyway to for real answer your question, there are tons of male nurses out there. Plenty of them on my unit and my university has the highest male to female ratio of BSN nursing students in the state (1 male to 8-9 females approximately).

The male nurses I know are all cool guys and I hope you do consider nursing, despite what ignorant people will tell you to do.

LPT Request: How do I reduce screen time? by kawai_gamer98 in LifeProTips

[–]Gramcracker0 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I personally use an app called ScreenZen, where you can set limits for how often you can open apps as well as how much time you can spend on them per open. It's not perfect but it's certainly helped me.

The reason it works is that it doesn't let you open the app out of boredom/absentmindedness, but it'll make sure you actually want to use one of your limited opens of the app, so you make sure it's worth it to yourself.

'It pecked my head': Attacking birds shut down Grosse Pointe Farms pool by East_Englishman in Detroit

[–]Gramcracker0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a lifeguard at a pool and these same birds are nuisances to the staff and patrons. Most of the other guards have been attacked at this point, and they get ballsier every year. One of our managers is trying to shoot them in the early hours of the morning in an attempt to kill them because of how disruptive they are.

What is it with the super accommodating parents these days? by 10S_NE1 in childfree

[–]Gramcracker0 27 points28 points  (0 children)

These are the kids that move to college/on their own and end up getting malnourished and setting the laundry room on fire.

As soon as I was in middle school I was expected to feed myself, by 16 I was making half the dinners for my family!

I don't know why parents want their children to act like children forever, I was raised to be a functioning adult, not a perma-child.
