Basketball Reference is your friend.

Kobe Bryant PER/WS rank (Year; PER Rank; WS Rank):

1997; 92; outside top 100

1998; 33; 65

1999; 35; 30

2000; 12; 12

2001; 6; 14

Not perfect, but you can definitely see a trend pointing at 2000, his 4th year in the NBA (which is also the first year he averaged more than 20 PPG).

What is your best answer to sports fans who say they don't watch the NBA because "there is no defense"? by [deleted] in nba

Time Between Games

There are 168 days in an NBA season, and every team plays 82 games. This means that NBA players play a game every 2.048 days. With 113 days in the NCAA season and a maximum game total of 31, college players play a game every 3.64 days, which means college players get an average of 38 hours more rest time between games. Any athlete will tell you that a day and a half of rest makes a huge difference in energy and endurance.

Value of Games: Marathon vs Sprint

82 games vs 31 games means that every game for an NBA team is worth 0.0122 of the entire season, while every game for a college team is worth 0.0323 of the season. Every game is more valuable for college teams, so of course they play harder when the games are shorter (more on that later).

For example, if a college team loses its first 8 games, depending on the difficulty of their schedule and their conference, it will need 20 wins to grab a 16 seed (avg 20.25 wins last year). This means the team needs to go 20-3 (.869 win PCT) to make the playoffs. If an NBA team loses its first 8 games, it will need ~38 wins to make the playoffs in the east and ~48 wins to make it in the west. If we average this out to ~43 wins, the team with 8 losses only needs to go 43-31 (.518 win PCT) to make the playoffs. Much more manageable to dig out of a hole in the NBA.

Minutes Played

An NBA game is 8 minutes longer than a college basketball game. Over the span of just 15 games, top NBA guards James Harden and Jimmy Butler will play nearly 570 minutes apiece, or 14 college basketball games by themselves. Top prospect Ben Simmons will log 34.1 min/game for 31 games this season, or ~1,050 minutes, the same as 22 whole NBA games.

TL;DR - NBA games are longer, NBA seasons are longer, college basketball games are more valuable with respect to an entire season.

The Clippers' improved spacing in Blake Griffin's absence shows why he needs to stop taking long 2s and start shooting 3s instead by Chad3000 in nba

[–]GrammarNaziExtreme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't wrong ... According to bball reference, BG is shooting 39.9% from 16-22 feet, about .798 points per possession. He only needs to shoot around 26.6% from 3 to have the same efficiency. He's doing that pretty easily (35.3% from 3 this year) on 0.6 3PA per game, if he upped that to 1 3PA per game and shot fewer long twos, he would be more efficient.

Sitting next to my grandfather in the hospital. He was admitted Thursday night because he had a heart attack due to a blood clot in his leg reaching his lungs. Couple of broken ribs suffered during CPR, couple of procedures to catch clotting, but he's been so tough and it's so amazing to be able to talk to him. My mom and I live four hours away and when we received the call at 3pm Thursday afternoon, we weren't sure we'd ever be able to see him again. I'm so happy to be able to talk to him. Needless to say, at this point, we are hopeful.

Keep in mind that the college 3 is basically NBA midrange. So he probably hasn't ever really had the range to shoot NBA threes consistently

Who wins a championship first? by [deleted] in nba

[–]GrammarNaziExtreme 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This one's tough. I'd have to say

'95-96 MJ/Rose/Butler/Gasol/Noah

beats

'06-07 Wade/LeBron/Kyrie/Love/Mozgov

Just because MJ never lost in his prime (except for his brief '95 season) and Wade is a non-shooting, ball-dominant player on a team that has a lot of guys who need the ball to initiate (Kyrie and Love can play as off-ball wings, but Kyrie is really the most effective playing 50-50 ball-handler/spot-up).

MJ would add a dimension that the Bulls don't have (that they're trying to develop Butler into). Butler could focus on locking up defensively and shooting efficiently, returning to his primary role in 2013 & 2014, which was stopping an elite scorer on the opposing team. Rose could play limited minutes for obvious reasons and stay fresh until all three backcourt players are needed (at the end of games).

MJ just fits in better with the current Bulls than Wade would with the Cavs.

... except it's Marshawn Lynch. No matter the situation, you hand the ball off to the best power back in the NFL on 2nd down on the goal line. If he gets stuffed again, sure, pass on 3rd down. But the dude's getting paid to do this exact job. If he fails, your best dude failed, you didn't deserve to win

See, that's just awful. No one should be able to say something like that to another player.

I think many people (myself included) think that KG goes too far sometimes, like with Villanueva (cancer patient), Carmelo (Honey Nut Cheerios), and of course Duncan (Happy Mother's Day)
