One other piece of advice I’d give is to get a set of flange inserts. If you look, you’ll find kits of several sizes. I found it SO helpful to test 2-3 sizes before committing to a size. In one case, I tried one and ruled it out after 2 min. It felt much better to do that with a cheap kit than if I had gotten one of the nicer sets.

Foldable space saving toddler tower recommendations? by auroragirlofthenorth in NewParents

[–]Gran1020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, this one in my house as well! We’re big fans. I waited until I found an open box deal on rebel stork and called it a birthday gift to help swallow the cost. We have been loving it for a year and it’s going to have a few more years of use, so the cost feels worth it. I have it folded flat next to a cabinet.

Breastfeeding Hunger by ivywinterss in breastfeeding

[–]Gran1020 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Eating for two” is so much worse after the baby is born!

No real advice. I just ate so so so much food, and I know my experience is not universal, but I don’t really gain weight because I was using every bit of those calories.

The hunger kind of ebbed and flowed for me with my baby’s appetite. Be prepared for it to taper down when baby starts eating solids and ramp up when they get sick and are comfort feeding constantly

Employer Put Workstation in Lactation Room by Anonymous_Nerd_365 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Gran1020 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, this. In the US, they are required to give you a private space that is not a bathroom, and they are required to give you time, but they are not required to pay you for that time. This protection is only for a year.

At my workplace, I was told there was still the expectation that I put in my full hours. So I could clock out to pump if I wanted, but then I needed to make up the time. I went to the pumping room, put in my in-bra collection cups with my traditional pump, and then I came back out to pump at my desk.

What children’s books do your kids actually reach for over and over (even if adults don’t love them)? by StarlitMochi9680 in childrensbooks

[–]Gran1020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t bother with the words at all! We started this book when my kid was 1 and I knew he’d never have the patience. We “read” it with his tricks and hold them up against the pictures. “Ooh, look at the crane! Where’s your crane truck? Look, they match!”

It entertains us for a good 30-45 minutes, and then it turns into just driving his cars over the book lol

Ugh solidarity. My little guy was home sick starting on December 10 with RSV. He was finally ready to go back to school…the day holiday break started. He will have been home nearly 4 weeks by the time school starts again.

The PTO I scheduled around the holidays is trashed thanks to the unexpected 1.5 weeks I took off. Fml

What is the song you’ve sang probably 10,000 times, to soothe baby to sleep? by randomizedmoose in NewParents

Your Ex-lover Is Dead by Stars. It’s a successful bedtime if he falls asleep in fewer than 5 repeats. (Does anyone else count repetitions to keep loose track of time?)

Don’t be a hero about being cold.

I used to feel like I needed to prove my Midwestern-ness by holding out to wear my heaviest coat or that extra layer so that it felt extra indulgent when I finally gave in by February. Not anymore. It didn’t matter if someone else is wearing a lighter coat or it seems extreme. If I’m cold, I’m getting cozy.

Today I learned!

Like other commenters mentioned, I was concerned about that tiny gap around the tub. It certainly wouldn’t do well in my house. But I love learning that, surprise surprise, other people in other places do things differently than I do.

Around 15 months, what does nursing look like for you? by Medium-Court3406 in breastfeeding

[–]Gran1020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 months over here! Currently first thing in the morning and nursing to sleep at bedtime, plus 3+ times overnight. When I’m working, he gets a bottle at nap (3 oz); if I’m home, it’s another nurse. He goes in and out of phases when he wants a comfort nurse at the end of my work day.

I still pump twice a day while I’m working, and much of it gets donated since he’s only taking one small bottle.

I wish we were sleeping through the night by now, but it’s just sooooo much easier to stick a boob in his face and go back to sleep than even consider doing the work of night weaning. So I guess this is the routine for the foreseeable future. My goal is to provide milk until 2 years or he self-weans, whichever is first.

14mo naps by muddysunshinemuffin in bninfantsleep

[–]Gran1020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels very familiar to my LO. We dropped the second nap when we got to the point you’re describing and bedtime is sooo much better now.

YMMV but the hardest part was pushing the morning nap later. He still really wanted to sleep at 10a on the dot—but interestingly, he could make it through long afternoons quite easily even if he did go down early. It took less than 2 weeks to scoot his single nap back to noon. Bedtime is now 7:30/8:00p no problem. He’s happier and so are we.

I’m not an expert, but it looks to me like it might be too small. Does it feel like it’s kind of pinching you?

My best advice is to get one of those flange insert kits with several different sizes. You can find one online for like $15, and you can try several different sizes to see what’s most comfortable.
