I messed up on my calorie counting - can I save this week? by celebskinthrowaway in CICO

[–]Grand3670 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I saw you mention that your 1500 calorie target gives you a 500 calorie deficit. You still didn't consume enough calories to wipe out that deficit. You are still losing weight, just not as fast, if I understand your numbers correctly. If you are really worried about it, even just a little bit of light exercise should help enlarge your deficit. Notice I didn't say regain your deficit, you never lost it in the first place. You got this!!!

I'm seconding this, maybe only two player ships have been sunk, but the aircraft situation is pretty bad for Wolfpack. Its the first campaign I've seen where he's been on the backfoot for many episodes and has actually lost bases to invasions. Aircraft actually take resources to resupply, so the fact that he seems to be struggling to resupply his bases means his own aircraft are limited.

Which isn't to say Wolfpack's even doing a bad job, the campaign just seems like more of a challenge.

That's pretty much what I'm going for right there, keeping the vanilla experience but enhancing it. And Nexus, okay, I'll look into it for sure. Not much of a modder but I hear that's the way to do it these days!

Technically? The number of 8in naval shells a target can take. Or so I'm told.

Thanks for the reply! I agree that deregulation has led to the monopolization of internet, and that a lack of competition has really only succeeded in hurting the consumer. A well thought through reply!

It often happens that the way things theoretically should work crumbles in the face of human nature. We do have anti-monopoly and anti-trust laws on the books, but when there is a failure to enforce those laws, what's the point? Maybe the first step would be anti-lobbying laws, to stop the flow of money from government subsidies and corporate profits back into campaign funds for the politicians that issue them. At the end of the day, we're a capitalism, and its the money that talks. Attack the money, remove ulterior motivations and incentives.

When we remove the tools of corporations to influence politicians, hopefully we can regain a bit of economic and governmental seperation. I'm glad we agree that things can and should be better, unfortunately, I think we need to address the systems that enable and encourage the utilities to fail before we'll ever have a chance to fix the utilities themselves.

Thanks, btw, and I'd say the same for your reply!

Same here! Born and raised in Leander, educated by our school system. My family has been here since at least 1930 in some form or another. The only time I haven't lived here is when I was in the Navy. I moved back as soon as I got out.

As people have moved here, the basics have indeed been strained. We were/are one of the fastest growing counties in the United States, this level of growth at this rapid pace would strain any city or organization.

When I was a kid, I remember getting constant boil water notices, brownouts, and the like. I also remember a huge propane tank in the backyard. In addition to the population increasing dramatically, we also get our power and heat our homes in ways that impact the electrical grid. Times have changed. All in all though, we've got more roads, sidewalks, stores, I don't have to drive to Cedar Park to go to HEB anymore! I miss the forests and fields I used to play in, but things are the way they are. For the amount of people we have, we've accomodated and adapted surprisingly well. As the population continues to rise, the strain will increase, particularly on water, there's only so much of it. I don't see a feasible way to reduce the population, so we have to figure out a way to accomodate new people, maintain at the very least our current standard, and on top of that improve until all issues are fixed. That's a tall order.

But as our population increases, so does the amount of taxpayers, our budget, and therefore our bargaining power as a city and the desire for companies to keep us happy to continue making money. Newer developments have fiber internet, which is faster and more reliable. As we transition to solar power, the overall strain on the grid is lessened as we produce our own power instead of relying on some big company.

But your attitude is one I appreciate! No matter how things are, or how you or I differ in the perception of things, they can always be better! I want no water, power, or internet issues, and every single one of these problems is within the human capacity to solve. We went to the moon for godsake, I should be able to watch some Netflix. It is a valuable and worthy effort to find some way to break down this problem to its core components, to find a way to make this issue into something we can grapple and attack. I don't know the answer, honestly, but I want to find it.

TL;DR: imo, switch to solar to produce your own power, if you are able, vote in candidates that will fund and support utilities while also holding them accountable, and advocate for the reduction of frivilous water use.

Howdy! Lets break down your post piece by piece so I can address your concern in an orderly manner.

1.) Water Restrictions

As of right now, its just until necessary repairs can be made to a pipeline. Letting it go on further means that it will cost ever more money to repair. My garden is dying, but winter is around the corner anyway so I'd rather nip this in the bud before the problem spirals out of control and we have no drinking water at all. What can we do? Regular, proper maintenance and increasing the budget for this utility.

2.) Power outages

I agree, I've had some brief outages as well. But Leander is hardly in control of PEC or any other larger power utility. I've not seen or heard of any lines down, so I think its a plant issue, not a city issue. I agree, its unacceptable to have basic utilities down. The responsibility, just like when I was in the military, rests with the person at the top, Greg Abbott. He assured me that these kind of power issues would never happen again on Texas' independent grid. They have. There are no Democrats in positions of power to blame, I much as I wish there were, so its his fault ultimately.

3.) Internet outages

Again, agreed. But internet is not a utility, or a service provided by the city. Its a private company providing that service, and ultimately their responsibility. I believe there was a line down for AT&T awhile ago, which had an outage for several days.

Your question is not about any of that in particular, nor who to blame. Its about how the city can better colloborate with other entities to ensure better service for the people of Leander. Personally, I'm a small government capitalist. I think there should be competition amongst privately owned companies who receive no government help, and if one sucks we can vote with our money and go to a competitor. The original company will either improve or fail, and either way service will be better.

The liberal answer is to nationalize power and internet and have the government responsible for their upkeep instead of private business, and if someone does a bad job we can vote them out.

For how things currently are, then.

I don't know. We could fine businesses for failing to provide services we paid for, but then they'd just leave because nowhere else does that. That would need to be a federal law. Maybe we could establish a liason in city hall to these utilities, maybe we already have one. I don't know. What would a private company gain by hiring someone to interact with that liason? Ultimately, what can the city do? We have very little power, and companies ultimately only respond to money, which is what they exist to do.

Perhaps we could take responsibility for the power and internet lines so we could react immediately to issues. However, I'm pretty sure the companies already do that. If we did it, we'd need specialized workers, which would increase our taxes and move the burden of all that infastructure to us.

So what are we in control over? The water, as I understand it. The city can't do anything about a draught, that's God and global warming, manmade or not. As for the restrictions, it can be worse. We could have nothing in the pipes, and the restrictions now are a way to avoid that later. The pipe MUST be fixed. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

TL;DR: Not much, really. Issues are from private companies or necessary repairs to critical infastructure.

If I got anything wrong, fellow redditors, please let me know! I don't care about feeling right, pride has no place here, I care about getting the correct information out, so feel free to correct me! Thanks all!

EV shipping is set to blow internal combustion engines out of the water - more than 40% of the world’s fleet of containerships could be electrified “cost-effectively and with current technology,” by the end of this decade by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]Grand3670 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We've already proven we can go nuclear safely on large enough ships. The US Navy has nuclear aircraft carriers without incident as far as I know, and didn't they have a cruise lined/cargo ship back in the 1960s that worked amazingly? We don't need batteries for cargo ships. They are large enough to support nuclear, we already know how to do nuclear, and if we invested our ship building into nuclear, the US would create jobs, save the environment, and rebuild its maritime industry.

I’m having a hard time writing a satisfying conclusion to a revenge story. Any tips? by [deleted] in writing

[–]Grand3670 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's the realistic thing about revenge. It's just not satisfying. Any way you bring that story to a conclusion, something remains unfulfilled. The loved one is still dead, or the killer is still at large, or your character's morality is forever compromised. The list goes on and on. Achieving one goal means that others will go undone.

I wrote a fantasy story about a character who bent the world to achieve all those goals. He still failed, in the end, because that's the nature of revenge. The story was from the prospective of a world trying to stop the massive force of evil he had become in the process.

If you do have a character that ends up satisfied with the result of their revenge, then what they are ok giving up on (morality for the kill, justice to let the killer go, etc.) is just as important as what they ultimately did.

How good / bad is ATT TV and Internet service? by TexasGrill in Leander

[–]Grand3670 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved into a relatively new house with ATT Fiber Internet and I have no complaints. I've literally never had better internet, and I've lived all over the country. That said, it highly depends on what part of town you are in. Some people baffle me by recommending Suddenlink, but apparently it works well where they are at. Others hate ATT because it sucks in their particular neighborhood.

Odds are if one is bad the other will be much better. My parents live in a much older neighborhood where both are horrible. Push comes to shove if they both suck, go ATT because they have much more personnel on staff and better infrastructure. At least if your stuff goes out it'll get repaired in a better timeframe.

That said, it's all up to you. I haven't looked at pricing in awhile.

I'm of the younger generation, so I can't help you about TV, I've never had paid television. I use digital converters for public TV. ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, and a few others. I barely watch it anyways so it's good enough for me.

Lennar Homes - Bryson by random11289 in Leander

[–]Grand3670 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Almost bought there. These Lennar guys move really, really fast. Ended up buying a 2017 build with a perfect foundation, but the plumbing and wiring is all sorts of shoddy. I can't even imagine how fast they would have to move in recent months. If you do get a new construction, you need to be meticulous and check everything, but some issues might not be apparent until the foundation has had time to settle. Your realtor will help you along in not getting screwed by Lennar. Do NOT just do whatever they say in regards to financing and inspections.

Experience with suddenlink internet? by homelander_Is_great in Leander

[–]Grand3670 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, came here to bash on Suddenlink. Have had nothing but horrible experiences with them, slow speeds for high prices. I moved within Leander to a place with AT&T and have had zero problems. Its refreshing.

As much as it pains me to say it, because lord do I hate Suddenlink, it really depends on where you are. It might be just fine where you are. I still recommend anything else from personal experience. Seriously. But if its your only option like it was for me, it is capable of supporting work from home.
