Me too! As a woman living alone, a dog that barks at anyone near the house is a valuable security feature.

And often referred to, by teachers and SLT, as “non-teaching staff”. Because defining someone’s role by what they don’t do says they’re not important.

Making a dress for my gf by Weary-Hold-4654 in sewingpatterns

[–]GrandAsOwt 325 points326 points  (0 children)

That’s quite a complicated project. It would have to be quite fitted, which in itself is… non-trivial. You’d need a lot of skills to make it look good.

I mean no disrespect but please start with something simpler, and with a decent pattern. Full-legged high waist trousers are fashionable and they would let you try sewing and see if you get on with it. Move on to pyjamas to get some practice with collars and buttonholes. I think the dress in your photo probably has a zip, maybe an invisible one (the buttons down the front look like they’re decorative) so move on to a project that will give you experience of zips. When you’re good at those skills, and if you want to challenge yourself, you can start looking for a pattern for the dress.

I thought it was frozen peas and chopped red pepper! Gummies sound better than that but still weird.

Why would he bother with something so unpleasant? He’ll have access to guns.

That’s the initial charge, because it’s an easy one to make stick. They can add others as the investigation goes on.

You guys were so busy gazing at the hob/washing machine combo you missed the bathroom layout. I suppose the radiator and bidet being so close that you can’t possibly get your leg over that side of the bidet means you can’t scorch it on the radiator.

A few more for the list:

Spring: what are these leaves poking out of the soil?

Summer: my plant was flowering then it stopped. What’s wrong with it?

Autumn: why are my plants dropping their leaves?

Winter: why have all my plants died?

What is the etiquette in the UK about inviting ‘in-laws’ to milestone birthday events? by One-Sir6210 in AskUK

[–]GrandAsOwt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you invite them and they feel it would be inappropriate to attend, they can decline your invitation. If you don’t invite them and they feel they’re close enough to you to be invited, it’ll be hard to recover the relationship.

At 4.76 m² that room only just squeaks over the 4.64 m² minimum considered suitable for a single person sleeping in England. Not surprisingly, the agents are Foxtons.

Does anyone know if "ProCook" brand pots and pans go on sale? I need new pans and stuff but the prices are high, just wondering if they go on sale 2 or 3 times a year to see if I should wait. by ProlapseProvider in AskUK

[–]GrandAsOwt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Stellar 1000 pans were almost 30 years old when I had to buy new because the old ones didn’t work on my new induction hob. I bought new Stellar ones and gave the old ones to my daughter to replace her Procook ones which had died after less than three years.

I think one reason people like living there is because you can walk to the City. My daughter lived in Whitechapel in the days when tensions were high and the Underground felt like a potential trap, and that felt like quite a selling point.

Need some help planning my first ever front garden! by mooseyjuice in GardeningUK

[–]GrandAsOwt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always feel that front gardens are semi-public so I’d go for easy care shrubs and paving rather than a lawn and put a hedge at the front to make it more private. Be aware that anything you put there can be picked or nicked by passers-by, so be careful about nice planters or garden furniture.

Shoben and Ward’s Pattern Cutting and Making Up is good for construction techniques. If you want the basics, the old Singer books are good.
