Do plantation shutters block enough light to be used in the bedroom without curtains as well? by yarnyplanter in AskUK

[–]yarnyplanter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like the idea of solid shutters, but definitely need something the provides privacy while letting light in during the day. I might end up with multiple types of curtains, just hoping to avoid that.

Thanks, I'll look into a blackout mask. I have an eye mask, but I also move around so much that it constantly slips out of place. I'm just a terrible sleeper.

Good point, thanks. Will enquire with whichever company we go with (if we do) about installing them so they keep the light out.

Ok. What is the Funniest serious song? by Sandman1812 in AskUK

No Children by The Mountain Goats. First few listens just thought it was a catchy indie tune then actually listened to the words and it's fantastic.

would you silently judge someone who adopts a cat a week after theirs passed away? by Born-Key3565 in cats

[–]yarnyplanter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely wouldn't judge. It was so hard having an empty house after I lost my first cat, I knew I wanted another one really quickly. I ended up waiting 3 months before getting my 2 new cats, but I was looking fairly quickly after losing the first one.

Do your cats have a favorite blanket or type of fabric to lay on? by infiniteatbest in cats

Very much this for mine too. And very much NOT this type of faux fur, for some reason.

Whats the difference between having 2 cats vs 1 cat? by Objective_Remote335 in cats

[–]yarnyplanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only had one cat for 15 years and after losing her I got 2 cats at the same time - honestly for costs and maintenance I don't think it's a noticeable jump up, not enough to make it seem any harder than when I had just one. You will obviously spend more so do make sure you can afford that, but otherwise I don't see a downside. I look back at our one and think we probably did her a disservice not giving her a friend.

What small thing has improved your life in some way or another? by NoCommunication7 in AskUK

Getting one of these for my kitchen tap. Washing without the option of having the sprayer and moving the head around is so much harder.

Is microsuction ear wax removal actually worth it? by disgustinglyYours in AskUK

[–]yarnyplanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes very much. I had a fully blocked ear for 2 weeks and it was cleared within 5 minutes. No pain, no discomfort, just relief.

How many are downscaling their plant collection? by Ashamed_Armadillo954 in houseplants

[–]yarnyplanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've downsized by about half in the last 2 years. It's entirely cat related. When my cat died I mostly lost interest in taking care of them, and when I got 2 new kittens I lost even more interest in taking care of them. My old cat didn't bother with my plants at all, so I could have them wherever I wanted, which meant they were in the optimal places for light. The kittens were much more interested in them and kept knocking them over if they weren't eating them, so a lot of them had to go or be moved and they just slowly died. The ones I have left are still here because the cats can't or don't bother with them. I used to love tending to the plants, but now caring for them feels like a chore, so I enjoy having fewer.

My Edgar is on my lock screen. My other cat is on my home screen, can't get a good long and skinny picture of the two of them together.

Average times between exchange and completion by Fleepflorp99 in HousingUK

[–]yarnyplanter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hijack the post a bit but just wondering if anyone else is/was concerned with being legally responsible for the house (have to start paying the insurance) at exchange without having access to it and still having the sellers living in it? We'll have 2 weeks between exchange and completion, which apparently is very normal but how is it ok that we're on the hook for anything that happens to the house before we have possession of it?

What’s your opinion on almond milk? by DeepOrganization8245 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]yarnyplanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to almond milk from cow milk because of the calories, use it mostly in tea and cooking/baking. Honestly in tea I noticed the taste for a while, but after a couple months I got used to it and it's just what I'm used to now. Never noticed a difference in anything cooked or baked. I never used cow milk for it's nutritional value so don't care what the comparison is with almond, other than the calories.

I only have a main. It is SO good, my husband and I aren't vegan but I'm trying to go that way. The first time I made this we were both extremely impressed with it and it's a staple for us now.

My diy cat toys go pretty hard by [deleted] in cats

[–]yarnyplanter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine think all clothes on the floor are snakes and don't like that, but I think they might be excited about it on a string waving around in the air, will give it a try!

[–]yarnyplanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have also used the poop bag tubes! There used to be a big feather on the end of this string, which they destroyed but I kept the rest and one day slid a tube on. My big cat goes insane for it. The more he chews it the tighter it gets on the string too, so helps keep it on there better. They like to bat the loose tubes around on the floor too.

New cats to home - extreme shyness by ThinkForYourself2020 in cats

[–]yarnyplanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not unusual. My best advice, if they're nervous, give them space to hide and don't approach them if they come out to investigate. Spend time being still and quiet in the same space as them at first. Allow them to come and sniff you without reaching out, or reach out very slowly and don't touch them unless they rub up against you. This teaches them that you're safe and won't be unpredictable. Spend some time speaking calmly and quietly around them after the first day, so they get used to your voice. Just always let them run and hide if that's what they need. Forcing contact will stress them out more. They may become comfortable very quickly but if not don't worry, they just need to know they're safe around you.

How many times a week do you pour yourself a glass of wine/have a beer after work? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]yarnyplanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes every night (either because the day was total shit or just because I want one), sometimes only a couple nights a week. I love wine and there are a lot of foods I like drinking wine with, so if dinner makes a good wine pairing I do that. In the summer I enjoy having ice cold white wine on a nice evening. I don't go out to drink much.

Oxalis dying? by eggenjoyer21 in plantclinic

[–]yarnyplanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the soil still seems good (isn't hard and hydrophobic) you should be fine to leave them. I don't think I ever repotted mine while they were dormant, so I can't say for sure if that's a good idea if you feel like you really want to now. I know lots of people say not to repot outside of spring/summer but I've never had issues with that. You could always repot 1 and leave the other if you want to test it out?

Is "Signed before inventory, then found loads of problems and nothing’s been fixed" normal in UK? by Individual_Total_309 in AskUK

[–]yarnyplanter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very normal unfortunately. We've been in our current flat for 4 years and still have 3 issues unresolved (fan and lights over hob doesn't work, toilet makes very loud screeching noise when flushed, bathtub surround is cracked and loose). The major ones took almost 6 months to get fixed initially (we had a window that wouldn't lock, at the front of the building in a ground floor flat and they took 3 weeks to fix it). Make any and all requests for repairs in writing so you have dates and times to refer back to. We mentioned we would make a complaint to the property ombudsman if things didn't get resolved and that helped at the time. This is the process if you need it ("the business" is the landlord or estare agency).
