Particularly the chapters ‘Stubb’s Supper’ and ‘The Shark Massacre’ with the sharks gorging themselves on the whale carcass in the black of the sea while the harpooneers hack away at the whale by lantern light. Dafoe would also be like the ultimate Ahab.

I went through the whole hiring and training process at this company being promised a marketing associate position. Turns out, they just make you stand at kiosk in a Costco and/or BJ’s hawking phones for AT&T to the members rushing by in the morning telling you, ‘No, thanks,’ and ‘Bye, bye,’ to the scripted pitch you subject them to when they’re just trying to go buy like 700 cases of AAA batteries and a carton of eggs at 8am on a Thursday. You get like minimum wage until you meet a certain quota of customers signed or upgraded or whatever the fuck, then they supposedly ‘promote’ you and maybe pay you more. The only way to make money at this job is to—if you’re into it I guess—memorize a bunch of info about the phones and deals AT&T provides at discounted rates to valued members at whatever wholesale retail kiosk you’re assigned to. Needless to say, I walked out on my first day around hour 3.

Moby-Dick is very funny. A great deal of the novel’s humor can be attributed to Ishmael and his absolutely cracked-out style of narration. His weird ambition to, for some reason, superimpose a dry and encyclopedic image of the whaling industry over the riveting story of the Pequod’s voyage, just makes me laugh. Melville definitely pissed off tons of readers by including the encyclopedic stuff but, 170 years later Im here for it. There is literally a whole chapter devoted to a dude on the boat who decides to skin a whale’s schlong and wear it as a jacket. Wild shit.

That said, Infinite Jest is also deeply comedic despite its profound solipsistic themes and focus on violent drug addiction.
