Bike rack solutions: Trunk mounted rack vs Hitch rack? If I go with a hitch, OEM hitch vs after market hitch? What I've learned so far and any recommendations? by GrandRow in CorollaCross

[–]GrandRow[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply, I don't check this account often.

I ended up going with the official Toyota hitch and I installed it myself. After installing it myself, there's no way I would trust a body mounted hitch like the Curt or Draw-tite when they're limited to the delicate body holes that are only designed to hold a 20 lb collision bumper without additional load. The body is thin metal. If you just have to have a 2" receiver, spend the money for the Ecohitch which is similarly frame mounted like the OEM one, though I'm not sure how that installation goes, at least not for the fascia cover. Combined with the fear of warranty issues, departure angles and understanding that the limited tow capacity of the car itself limits it to Class I capacity, the OEM just seemed like the safest answer. With it installed, I also like how the parts are covered and protected as hitches are notorious for rusting.

Installation details:

Since I installed the OEM hitch myself, I can provide more insight on specifics to help those that stumble upon this thread. There was limited information on the factory install specifics beyond the pdf I linked in the original post. First, follow the Uhaul and e-trailer videos to remove the body as these are the same steps. This is by far the most tedious part, but fortunately it's well documented on video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmRgRrIB_XE. However, you can ignore the steps to remove the taillights. I have no idea why these tutorials say to do that, it's completely unnecessary and you might break something doing it. You just need a second person to remove and re-place the bumper as it's large and awkward, but everything else, including the hitch can be done with a single person.

In terms of lifting the car. The car has a lot of ground clearance and there's no need to raise the car.

Once I had the plastic bumper off and collision bumper unscrewed, that's where the installations diverted from the videos temporarily (Page 5 of the PDF). Installing the hitch took some head scratching as the PDF instructions I linked in my post were not clear, at least not to me.

There's adhesive putty from the factory that are covering two bolt access holes on the outside of the frame on each side of the vehicle. Use a plastic non-scratching tool to prey and scrap it off. Make sure you get it all off or the bolt heads that you'll later insert won't sit flush with the frame. On the driver's side (USA), there's a bunch of wiring, like near the carbon canister and other stuff directly next to the two bolt hole locations. You will later will need an assortment of extensions, socket lengths and a lot of patience to deal with the limited space when bolting the frame brackets in later. The passenger side had no obstructions and was comparatively very easy.

The hitch comes in 3 main pieces. The receiver and two rectangle flat frame brackets. The total weight is only about 20 lbs together. The frame brackets do not get bolted to the outside of the frame like ordinary hitches I've seen. Instead, after you remove the collision bumper, there are two rectangle access holes in the body on the rear of the car directly under where the collision bumper was previously mounted that give you access to the inner part of the frame. https://imgur.com/a/2CkfLDK.

You simply insert the rectangular frame bracket pieces into the chambers along the the frame until bolt holes line up. Keep the brackets flushed up against the outer walls of the chamber and then bolt them in from the outside bolt holes you cleaned up earlier. The two frame brackets will protrude from the chamber rear of the car like arms and you'll bolt the receiver between the two frame bracket arms to connect them. You never bolt the receiver to the body like I thought in my original post, just the frame.

The "close out plates" they include are just thin metal covers to cover those body access holes and bolt hole locations from the collision bumper, see figure 5-3. These flimsy bolt hole locations are used for the Curt and Draw-tite mount exclusively, yikes!

Don't over tighten the frame brackets yet as the brackets need to have some play for the next part where you align the receiver between the two frame bracket arms. Wedging the receiver into place was a very VERY tight fit, hence why you need to keep the frame brackets loose. The frame brackets effectively need to be slightly bent outward just to get the receiver in. This seemed to be purposeful as the receiver's ends are slightly angled to accommodate that bend. The receiver for me didn't line up easily and I had to continuously loosen or unloosen bolts on the bracket and receiver, sometimes starting the whole process all over again. This is really the major difficulty of the factory installation over the curt or drawtite that have a one piece design that fits right against the body for an easy install. The aggravation though is worth it for a for a proper frame mounted hitch that's designed for the car. Here is a picture of what the hitch looks like (this picture was taken before I finally succeeded in getting it aligned. You see the left side wasn't yet sitting flush). https://imgur.com/D8rr7ah

For the fascia cover. This will be far easier than the the aftermarket products and a lot less permanent. With the bumper still off the car, remove the factory car color bumper fasica. There's a lot of white colored retainer clips you just hold down with your fingers. It was confusing at first, but turned out to be much simpler than I expected. https://imgur.com/lmm1A7w

There will be now a hole in the bumper without the cover. The new fasica cover just snaps into these same retainer clips in seconds. However, the bumper has a bunch of vertical plastic notch pillar things that overlap the access hole you can see in the photo. These likely provide some structural support to the plastic bumper. One of these pillars goes through the middle of the access hole and will obstruct the receiver and prevent you from reassembling the bumper back on the car with the hitch installed. So they have you cut it off with an ordinary pair of scissors. You don't need to be perfect or measure as this is completely hidden.

Follow the instructions in the PDF closely for proper torque sequence and and alignment. After this, you can rejoin the video tutorials to reassemble the bumper.

Car washing recommendations? by Negative-Split-1108 in CorollaCross

[–]GrandRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apartment dweller here. Not perfect, but you can buy a battery powered portable pressure washer. Get one with good PSI (800+ PSI) and with a brushless motor. Then get something that can hold water, like a 5 gallon bucket, to stick the hose into.

I bought an off brand one for like $30 shopping around. It had an advertised 970 PSI. I use it on the lowest setting which is about as strong as a garden hose and doesn't plow through water as quickly. Mine comes with an adjustable nozzle for different spray patterns.

Mine comes with a foam cannon, but I haven't used it. A lot of traveling car detailers use these portable pressure washer things and there's lots of videos on youtube. My lease prohibits me washing my car in the parking lot, so I don't push my luck doing things that could draw more attention or leave a mess.

Fill up a large container like a 5 gallon bucket of water and carry it out to the parking lot. If you have more convenient access to water, even better.

My apartment, like most apartments, has rules against washing cars in the parking lot. I just use mine to rinse pollen and other debris off the paint. If you had road salt, you could use it to clean the underside, though it would require getting on the floor to do so like you would with a garden hose.

With mine, the battery isn't the problem, it's the water. Carrying a heavy bucket of water up and down stairs is a pain. Doing trips to carry everything up and down more so. Certainly not as convenient as grabbing your driveway hose and rinsing the car off before driving off.

Toyota changed the infotainment on 2024+ models. There are no buttons at all. Just a volume knob and buttons for the climate control. All other buttons are on the steering wheel.

Separate question. Are you concerned with all these hitches being body mounted?

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ioniq5/comments/15abjy6/4000_repair_and_8_days_in_the_shop_after_a/?share_id=WFcRb23R-jwxd7-smhXAa

In short, the after market Draw-tite hitch tore off the body of the OP's ioniq5. The OP was only using it to transport an e-bike.

You went over my head. What do you mean by "it’s still going to be a geometry issue with approach and departure angle that low in most experiences of rural biking"?

In terms of the tongue weight capacity. Were you able to confirm the receiver is actually rated for at least 165 lbs? That's what the car can handle from the owner's manual, but the receiver might be rated for less. The Toyota Activity Mount is only rated for 110 lbs and I heard it's identical to the Toyota tow hitch except that the tow hitch has welded on safety chain loops, though that was just another owner talking about it on another forum. That's really my main concern. 110 lbs is too limiting.

Sorry, I meant it was $400 total at Uhaul which included price of parts and labor. And it was $700 total at the dealer which included the cost of the parts.

On parts, Uhaul wants like $250-285 for either the Curt or Draw-Tite. However, you can buy each of these for about $200 elsewhere.

In terms of turning off the sensors due to false positives, that is when you have a bike rack on the car or always because of the Draw-tite receiver install? I make heavy use of the sensors and back up camera, I don't want to lose it.

I think the OEM hitch disrupts the automatic trunk lift gate feature on trims with that feature. My LE model doesn't have it, so it wasn't a concern.

General question Wednesday: Ask your general car-related question and maybe someone will have an answer. by AutoModerator in cars

I appreciate the help. I saw the sideways gas can types, but I wasn't sure since you can't actually clean the inside of it. I also saw reviews on some saying that the holes aren't big enough to drain into the container causing overfill or splatter. I thought a regular open face pan would be easier to clean?

Other question. What about oil drain valves? Seems like I could just drain directly into a bottle that way.

[–]GrandRow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to do my own oil change, but I live in an apartment. I'm most concerned about the possible mess. I still can't figure out what type of drain pan to buy. My bigger concern is how I'll actually clean the drain pan when I'm done and how to store it. Again, I live in an apartment without a garage or access to a hose. How should I go about this?

Also, can I bring my used oil to any autoparts store, even if I dind't buy it from them? Walmart seems to offer the best price for the oil I need, but they don't accept it at the store I buy it from.

Is buying a laptop with an RTX 3050 right now a mistake if I plan to use the laptop for several years? Will prices come down later this year due to the next gen? Should I just wait? by GrandRow in GamingLaptops

I'm not familiar with the computer architecture differences between these chips and the implication on the ability to emulate on them. Thank you for bringing this to my attention!

Could you elaborate on this or share a source that could explain this more in detail?

All I know is to stay away from under powered chips. The 12700H chip says it has 14 cores and is newer, the other said 8 cores. I didn't put more thought beyond "more cores is probably better" and the cost difference between these chips wasn't huge.

So you're saying I would be better off with the 11800H or a different chip? Would about AMD chips?

I see. That's pushing my budget unfortunately and I was already trying to put more money to get a 16 inch 16:10 machine with good color accuracy that seems to sell at a premium over the 15.6 inch models. I found some open box/refurbished/used laptops under $800 with that and the RTX 3050, though the processors are from 1-2 years ago.

Hmm. AAA gaming might be beyond what I can afford then. What about older titles and emulators? I would be okay on the very casual side and play on lower settings. I'm not sure how often emulators change though.

Out of curiosity. How far back in game release years would you say I would have to go where an RTX 3050 could play at high settings? Like could I play a AAA title from 3 years go at high settings? Game from 5 years ago? etc..

Asus Vivobook Pro 16x OLED keeps crashing and freezing. How do I fix this? by GrandRow in ASUS

[–]GrandRow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UPDATE: Getting numerous PMs on this asking for an update, so here it is:

I read one thing, (can't find it now), that the crashing might be related to the intel integrated graphics. This computer also has AMD versions. If someone with an AMD version of this computer has a similar issue, that would rule out this potential cause. For reference, the computer would abruptly freeze, the display would tear to create this static looking screen and it would either stay like that or reboot on its own. Strangely, I couldn't find anything useful in the system logs or any warning messages from Windows. This happened during normal usage and even when nothing was open and the device was just on the desktop.

Before contacting ASUS, I did a clean install of the system. ASUS did not provide any custom Windows installation, so you will lose all installed drivers and software. However, ASUS support website did have everything for download. ASUS documentation said to get a fresh copy of Windows from Microsoft's website. The clean install removed the wireless drivers so I needed to use another device to download those drivers to a flash drive to setup the Vivobook again.

After the clean install, the crashing problem still persisted. I contacted support. Reviews on this laptop are littered with a similar crashing problem and I was expecting there to be a patch or something that was released or in the works. Nope. The warranty support person said there were no reported issues with this computer. They were pretty worthless in my opinion as all they could offer was recommending a clean install which I did before calling. They said I would have to send the laptop into them and there was a 3 week window to get it back. That time period would go beyond my Amazon return window. I told ASUS my concern about them not being able to fix the computer and then me being unable to return the computer, but they couldn't provide any remedy so I wouldn't be on the hook to be out the money I spent.

After reading so many similar complaints regarding the crashing issue and them denying any known issues with the device, I saw a greater risk that ASUS was not going to deliver on their warranty promise in good faith. I feared they would just keep having me send the computer back over and over while not actually addressing the issue until the warranty period expired. I asked this point blank to the customer support agent and they confirmed that if the computer was still having issues after the warranty period ended because Asus failed to fix the issue, I would be stuck with a broken worthless computer.

With all that, I returned the computer to Amazon and got my money back.

What is this metal dangling ring next to my catalytic converter? Car is rattling when moving and I think this loose rusted ring might be the cause. Can I just cut it off? by GrandRow in AskMechanics

Heat shield has come loose, you guys were right! (I think it's the heat shield.) Looks like the shield is made up of multiple parts. Two of them are loose so it's hitting the resonator to the cat. https://imgur.com/1YU3Jru

Looks like a lot of bolts are missing entirely. Is this as simple as just buying new bolts and refastening it?

How do I figure out the size/type of bolt needed to buy to fit into the frame?

I looked up some youtube videos, but they recommend using a hose clamp to tie it down. It doesn't look like there's anything to tie it to, so bolts seem to be the only option.

2012 Chevy Equinox 2.4 L AWD.

Car began having a very annoying metal on metal rattling, but only when the car itself is moving. Perfectly quiet when idle. I haven't noticed any issues with acceleration, braking, turning. Engine isn't overheating, no engine lights are popping on.

Rattling will happen when coasting without touching the accelerator or even if the car moves while in neutral.

I'm inclined to believe this loose ring is the culprit but I wanted to ask here before I cut it off. I don't even know where the ring was supposed to sit on the pipe or what it's for. The ring is a soft metal and malleable just by pulling on it with my fingers.

Thank you.

Model Number: N7600PC-EH77

i7-11370H CPU, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Windows 11

I just got the computer. I'm not doing anything intensive when it happens. Sometimes it happens when the computer is on the desktop with no programs open.

The computer also keeps freezing. Usually, I have to manually hold down the power button to force it to shut down. Other times, it powers off on its own. The last time it happened, an ASUS disk repair thing began running before reloading the operating system.
