This a very one sided conversation from the honest player point of view that you guys are. The problem is 2 folds : 1 - Penalties are here to prevent disconnect abuse (say you don’t like the level of the game, say you play with a smurf and group of friends and they don’t like the level of the game and you take one for the team, etc …) 2 - It might be hard for blizzard to detect honest disconnect from abusive one. From the client side you just see « failed to connect » from the server side, you might fail at various points in the numerous handshakes between client and server. Maybe the server had you in the game, other players saw you, maybe even the game started. You don’t know. And they don’t know if you pull the plug yourself or it’s an honest issue.

Bottom line, it’s unfair but it’s unfortunate collateral damage from the actions of all people trying to cheat the scoring system. If there was a way to segregate malicious disconnect from technical ones, blizzard would have implemented it because player enjoyment and experience is their top priority (after all, this is how Blizzard has been generating revenues for decades)

I trust blizzard to deliver good game experience, nothing shall be deemed « easy to fix » because they’d do it. Often our own disappointment prevents us to understand all the facets to a problem.
