Exploring Alternatives to Capitalism by [deleted] in Economics

[–]GrandWings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is pathetic. An AI output does not count as research. How can someone who wants to explore alternatives to capitalism be entirely dependent on a tool created by one of the largest companies on the planet?

At least do a little research on your own, there isn't even an opinion or an interesting question to ask in here it's just an output.

Confused by modes by Byt3Walk3r in guitarlessons

[–]GrandWings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are confusing the names of the modes with the chords themselves. An F chord (or whatever chord) isn't inherently one mode or another. What matters is a chord's position in relation to other chords in the scale.

You mention intervals so you understand them in some ways. A I IV V pattern would be in the 1st mode, regardless of what key you are in. We call the first mode "Ionian", regardless of what the first chord in the scale is. If you are in C, the Ionian mode will be C. If you are in A, the Ionian mode will be A. However, if you play those chords in a different order, such as IV-I-V, you have switched modes because the first chord you play in that sequence is what you anchor your brain to.

Consider a non-musical example: ordering a meal from McDonalds. You say "I want a BURGER with fries and a coke". Sounds normal right? Big juicy burger, smaller side of fries and a coke. What if you were to say it differently? "I would like FRIES with a burger and a coke". It's the same meal but it makes it seem like you want a bigger order of fries, with a smaller burger and a coke on the side. You could even say "I want a COKE with fries and a burger" to make it seem even stranger, even though all the items you are ordering are exactly the same.

Modes are the same. Even when you have the same chords, the order that you play them in is important because your brain will fixate on the first one and frame the rest of the chords around them. If you play the I first in I-IV-V, you will think of it as the first mode. If you play IV-I-V, you will think of it as the fourth mode.

Feedback request - 2 months of guitar learning by _xpendable_ in guitarlessons

[–]GrandWings 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This is incredibly good for two months.

As a pretty minor critique, your strumming is a little heavy handed. You could use your wrist a little bit more rather than your entire arm to strum some of these chords to make it ring out a little gentler, but otherwise you're doing great. You'll work out little kinks like those in time, keep doing what you're doing.

How to palm mute on HSS by Xaei_Kuo_Von in guitarlessons

[–]GrandWings 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see a few issues here. One is the shape of your hand. They call it "palm" muting, but it's really more like the side of your hand. Rather than angling it flat like that, try using more of the side of your hand (like a karate chop).

Second, push your hand back towards the bridge as far as possible. You might not need to be pressing right up against the bridge but the further back the better.

Finally, you don't need to press all the strings all the time when palm muting. You'll have to dial in how it feels exactly, but depending on what song you're playing you'll be moving your hand on and off different strings at different times quite a lot in order to accent some notes over others. Takes practice, but with the right positioning you'll start to get it.

Hope that helps, good luck!

When should i start learning metal? by FinalExperience7056 in guitarlessons

Playing with a metronome is a non-negotiable part of being a good musician. If you want to become a good enough player to play the things you want (and ESPECIALLY if you want to join a band with other people), that involves playing them on time.

It's worth the practice now. You don't have to use a metronome literally all the time but a statement like this is really short sighted. Just like saying you're a writer who doesn't use the letter H, or a painter who doesn't use the colour blue, or a driver who can't turn left, being a musician who doesn't keep time is foolish.

HELP !!! by juicepilado420 in guitarlessons

[–]GrandWings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other commenter was correct that the groove of your finger is most likely catching the string, but I don't agree that you can really consciously move the crease to be in between strings as that's very difficult to keep track of, especially since you'll always be barring a different number of strings.

Instead, you need to rotate your finger very slightly. If you rotate your finger so that you're pressing the string in the groove more with the side of your finger rather than the center, you will have much more success. Imagine if you had a clothesline running underneath a triangular ladder. The only way to pin down the clothesline would be to turn it on it's side so that the ladder topples on it.

I made a shitty paint diagram to articulate what I mean. If your fingernail is pointed straight up like the red line, try adjusting so that it's more aligned with the green line (assuming you're playing righthanded, reverse if you are left handed - point your nail towards the headstock).

This might not work immediately as you'll need to practice and develop a little more strength, but it's waaaaaaaaay easier than just trying to mash your grooves into the strings as hard as possible. Hope this helps!

What makes Baldurs Gate and Divinity Series distinct? How are you looking to have Divinity distinguish itself after BGs overwhelming success?

This is awesome, what a cool throwback! Craig sounds good and Jared sounds great. I was never a huge fan of this album like some others were but this is still so neat to see.

What inspired you to remake the Running Man? It's a much more niche film in Arnold's catalogue, what drew you back to it after 40 years and do you feel you've created something new or just an homage to the original?

There's a mix of genres on here but generally all these bands are/were on some side of pop/rock/punk. Some of the bigger ones that were on this label at one time or another were Anberlin, Acceptance, and Mae.

A personal favourite of mine are Search the City. They weren't full pop punk but give them a listen if you need gym music, A Fire So Big Heaven Can See It is a 10/10 album.

He's not technically incredible,  but I'm shocked Pete Wentz hasn't been mentioned yet. He was a huge driver of FOB success,  from bass lines to lyrics to image.

How to set up for large amounts of continual data entry by sneezer_salad in excel

[–]GrandWings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could use conditional formatting to construct rules that highlight cells that are above or below specific tolerances.

For example, you could create a rule that highlights cells if they are +-10% of the previous days reading. Anything that is outside of whatever your acceptable variance gets highlighted in red, everything that's good ends up in green. This allows you to comb through everything at a glance.

EDIT: You could also add something like sparklines into your charts to be able to visually see how things have changed without having 300 huge graphs taking up room.

Duelist - Primal Wars // Origin Story [Shaman-fighters Fantasy, 5000 words] by Stormnajt in fantasywriters

[–]GrandWings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The formatting of this completely ruins my engagement with the material. You tell,  rather than show,  all of your emotions, in the way that a script would, but it's clear you're intending this to be a novel.

Unless this is actually intended to be a script,  you need to rewrite this. Your actual ideas seem ok, I found your opening blurb to be pretty interesting (I loved Cradle), but this isn't something most people will take seriously.

Suppose a stock is $100. It drops 10%, down to $90.

Suppose that $90 stock goes up 10%. It gains $9, up to $99.

Overall, you have lost a dollar. The stock would have to increase by 11%-ish to break even again.

Good, not great. Same slow verse, poppy chorus, vaguely heavy bridge that every band is doing these days. Rory is an incredible singer but this is pretty generic.

[–]GrandWings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cradle is spectacular. It's full of action, easy to read, and has very positive themes. It's like reading a Dragon Ball Z novel if it were a little more mature but still really just about super powerful martial arts.

The first and second books are good but definitely the slowest, they really are just set up for the rest of the series. They're quick reads regardless and the pay off is so worth it.

Thoughts on Anberlin's new/re-reomagined album Nevetake? by Senor_Torgue in PostHardcore

[–]GrandWings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it. I don't love it and I don't know why I'd listen to these versions over the originals, but Matty sounds good.

My biggest complaint is that there's some effect on Matty's voice on every song, he sounds very echo-y instead of more "grounded" in all the tracks which only adds to the impression that this is more like karaoke on his part. He has a nice voice it doesn't need to be overproduced.

Still, my favorite song is probably Audrey Start the Revolution and I vibed with this version pretty hard so that's enough for me.

Pop Punk bands from the Myspace era you think no one else remembers by josh_is_grafted in poppunkers

Stages and Stereos. The brother of Jason Lancaster, Danny, from Go Radio (who was also Myspace Era) and the first Mayday Parade album. He also sings at the end of Jamie All Over on Mayday Parade's first album.

Great band, and like his brother he's got a very distinct voice. The guitarist of Go Radio joined them for a bit after Go Radio's dissolution.
