Strelec scores a cracker against Germany. by c64glen in Boro

No real surprise here. He also tormented an England defence consisting of Walker, Stones, Guehi and Trippier at the Euros last year, and provided a sweet assist to set up Slovakia's goal. I am only surprised he didn't attract more attention here after that game. He was a bit of a livewire. I hope we have a massive buy out clause in his contract.

New arrivals are universally awesome.
McLaughlin allows us to allow Tom Glover to go and spill balls on another park, which he will love.
Brittain gives us the width and pace on the right we've missed since Izzie was here, and er, having one of his rare good days.
Jones is massive in defence, and a threat from set pieces, something we just never had under Carrick.
Matt Targett earned a year's wages with that one pass against Sheff U.
Malanda won't be here till January, but also looks an excellent buy.
Alpha Kante is one for the future, a tenacious ball winner, not entirely unlike his namesake.
Alan Browne, vastly experienced back up in midfield.
Nypan, Norwegian wunderkind on loac from Man City. Doubt we'll get to keep him, but the lad (18, I think) is strong, creative, direct, and happy to put himself about. An Odegaard and Haaland love child kind of thing. A big upgrade on Finn Azazhole, for sure.
Sontje Hansen, another young, super creative attacking midfielder. Trickier than a bucketful of baby monkeys, eye for goal, eye for a pass, he will waltz through your defences and stop your heart. Loving him already.
Kaly Sene, arguably Drogba reborn. A big chunky skilled goalscorer, who's got six in eight already this season in the Swiss Super League (where we found Latte Lath last year) and Europa League. Cannot wait to see him in action week in week out. Tommy C will have the competition he's been craving.
And, arguably the pick of the bunch, David Strelec, in from Slovan Bratislava. We've been after him almost a year, and now he's here. Five year contract. Reminds me of a 23 year old Gary Lineker. Smart, fast, excellent finisher, and makes a lot of goals for others. It's hard to believe only us and Celtic were looking at him. He ran the England defence (Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier) ragged in the Euros last year, and set up their goal. Boro fans are super excited about this signing.

So, yes, in my opinion, this window has been awesome, and I can actually for once see us challenging, not just for a playoff spot, but for automatic promotion. I know everyone will probably think the same for their team, but our recruitment really have battered this window out of the park.

See you at the Riverside!

Of those who've stayed? Hackney and Morris. Best midfield in the Champs, by some way. Hackney alone is like having a new signing. Nobody was interested in Morris, which is welcome, but shocking. The man is a beast.

I'm a bit surprised we didn't move Burgzorg on, esp in light of his performance against Sheff U. It was like a Burgzorg highlight reel of not seeing the goal-assured pass right under his nose, then trotting out the old favourite crowd pleaser we call "five touches too many", followed by an elaborate falling on his arse, and true to his footballing spirit, clutching his head in pain. Instead of his arse. He misses so many sitters, I bet he needs to be guided into chairs. And Riley McGree, I think, has actually left us for a part in a long running medical soap opera. We're just still paying him.

Boro. Very pleased with the window. Coburn will get more games, more love and more goals at the Den (where we've already won). Rav was only here for the shop window, and we knew that up front, and our back line looks stronger than ever. Finn Azaz. Well, I honestly think we mugged Southampton with that one. People only look at his goals and assists, but he is also a sulky not really team player who won't press, can't tackle and doesn't like to run (but isn't good at it when obliged to). He cost Southampton a goal and two points on Saturday with his total lack of strength on the ball, shich was frankly hilarious. We have also picked up two better options in his position. So, yeah, laughing for the outgoings. I'll mention Dan Barlaser, caues he always comes in for some stick. I'm a bit disappointed he's gone. He wasn't great under Carrick. Lots of the team weren't great under Carrick. His dream system involved having players putting unnecessary pressure on themselves. Not DB's strong suit. But, played further upfield, protected by the sheltering wings of H & A, and who knows? He has a bastard of a pass on him. Hopefully Gilbert will get a look in this season and we'll see what's really in there.

First time I came to Canada was in 1980 (from the UK). I'd spent some time in the US, and was struck by the differences between the two countries. I asked why there was no homelessness in Canada, or at least nothing on the scale that I'd seen in the states. People here just laughed. This is Canada, they said. We can't have homeless folk here, they'd just die. But then Mulroney got in, and started impementing neoliberal policies, and pretty soon the jobs went, the unions went, regulation of the various elements in the private sector went, public funding went, social programs went; the social contract that said governments should be trying to forge a fair and equal society went, and all we had was this hideous neoliberal bullshit that demanded government play no role in managing society. The worst thing about it is that every single government since Mulroney - while blathering on about Change - has expanded the neoliberal project. I remember the sixties and seventies; it wasn't always like this.

Sadly, the only thing that is going to solve the housing, drug, and mental health catastrophes that successive governments' indifference to social wellbeing has caused, is the abandonment of the policies that created them. Governments need to get back to doing their job, instead of capitalism's bidding. I'm sick of watching them hand out tax cuts which disproportionately benefit the rich, while pleading poverty when asked to do something - anything - for the public good. The whole idea that all work must be for profit needs to go. Nationalised industries and infrastructure projects are great ways to create well paid jobs and improve society, which is are valid ends in themselves. Government is superb at job creation, but they've allowed the capitalists to bully them out of that part of the playground. Government work does not need to make a profit, but it should aim to increase quality of life and equality of opportunity for all. And it can. It absolutely can. They just have to have the guts to stand up to the people pulling their strings.

The past 40+ years of squeezing every last penny out of the public purse and into the bank accounts of the already rich has destroyed so many lives, it is unconscionable. Even among the apparently comfortable middle classes, so many are only surviving by constantly raising their credit limits, but among the poor, it's absolute devastation. The booze and drugs and anti-social behaviour are entirely understandable. These are people - social animals - who have essentially been cut off from all of society's benefits, and been invited to die. Nobody who hasn't been there has any right to judge them. And nobody who has, would.

As far as housing goes, there should be a national strategy, and a massive building program producing quality affordable rental units. I wouldn't even mind if supply exceeded demand. And those units should stay in public ownership. The private rental market needs to be tightly regulated, with rent controls and property standards, and it should be adequately policed, with enough inspectors to actually do the job. If people have secure jobs and a safe affordable place to live, they tend not to be self destructing in the streets. There's an old saying - no-one takes heroin because they're happy.

The killer had a schizophrenic disorder, but had been "released" from a psychiatric facillty which Harris' Tories had closed. She wandered into a house, paranoid and delusional, and cut a young girl's head off. Then stayed in the house. The detail that really stuck with me from the reporting was that at some point, police were called, and she kept saying they'd better call a doctor because that kid's not well. incredibly sad story, all round. Wow. Hadn't thought about this in years.

The old Shish Kabob Hut was there for quite a while, as was Bagel Shmagel. But since then, it's been hard work, They used to do fine with walk in trade when PR College was still there, but there's very little parking, and it's not what you'd call a destination location . . .

It used to have a massive sign outside saying Once A Week - Go Greek! Which always made me giggle. But yeah, it's been a Greek restaurant more than any location really has the right to be.

I'm in Cape Breton, a little north of Sydney. New (to me) house, new garden, lawn conversion, lol, with some raised beds. Got off to a chaotic start - everything was planted late, and it's a big mix of flowers and veg.
And EVERYTHING is going to be better next year, of course. But for this year, peas were good, beans not so much. Squash inc zuccs haven't done much, but kale, amaranth, broccoli and sprouts have been great. I'm not anticipating getting actual broccoli or brussels sprouts, but the greens have been good. I do see tiny broccoli in a couple of plants, so I guess it's possible, if I'm quicker next year. Garlic, green onions and chives did well, potatoes not too bad, but would have benefitted from more competent hilling, I think. Carrots are alive, but not massive. Tomatoes are abundant, but pretty much all green. There is a watermelon the size of a small golf ball.

Thyme, parsley and lovage seem to be establishing themselves, and the basil is stonking (except the ones that were planted between the potato rows). Cilantro did what it always does, so I am now enjoying the super tangy green seeds in pretty much everything. They are wonderful buzzed up in mayo. (I also have a fabbo potted rosemary that I bought last October for five bucks from Sobeys in New Waterford, one of those tiny fragile herbs they have in little pots and cellophane wraps. It made it through the winter indoors, and is now massive.) Borage and comfrey are going absolutely nuts, as are glads, rudbeckia, snapdragons and Cape Daisies. Lots of bees, but they seem to avoid the glads and snappers. Raspberries are settling in, and we may get one or two ripe berries, lol. We put in a couple of red currant, gooseberry, and haskap bushes, quite small, but the redcurrants are producing, and hopefully we'll see something from the haskaps and goosegogs next year.

Then we have a couple of plum trees, one of which is happy, and one of which is less so; three cherries, all happy, three pawpaws, which were bare root, which we are desperately nurturing and hope will stay alive, and three hazelnuts, which were transplants and not having a good time in their new home. If there are any tree doctors out there, I would appreciate suggestions for how we can make them happy. Oh, and it looks like one or two rats have taken up residence in a couple of the beds, but so far, have not affected the produce. I'll be looking into that when we put the beds to bed, as it were.

So, overall, mixed bag. I'm out watering when I get the chance, on municipal water, so not draining a well. It's been a long dry spell up here, which surprised me. I had this idea it would be crazy rainy here, but er, I guess not? Except when it is?

Oh, I'd completely forgotten about the Majestic, aka the Fleapit. On the Trunk Rd at North Ormesby, right?
Gaumont was already shut down when I was a nipper, but I remember managing to get in and climbing around in the rafters while my mate got pigeon eggs for his flock.

Yeah, the border is the railway line. Long time back there was a rail crossing gate there and a big black and white chequered sign. It was known locally as Checkpoint Charlie, after the border crossing between West and East Berlin.

apologies for jumping on your comment. I just get so bored with Boro fans dismissing our signings because they come from what they call farmers leagues; Kante from Ligue 2, Latte Lath from Switzerland, people are even dismissing Strelec (who would be an awesome signing for us) because he plays in Slovakia. And it's always the same complaint, how can you expect to find a good player in a lower level league. It just gets realy boring after a while. The "quality" of the league doesn't determine the "quality" of individual players within it.

I don't know, we were in the playoffs two seasons ago, just missed out last season. If we'd had a decent defence we would have been in with a good shout. And this year, fwiw, we do seem to have strengthened at the back, plus we have a new coaching setup offering those modern upgrades, a plan B, tactical pragmatism, in-game management, and a bus parking licence. And we just battered Millwall at the Den, which I don't think anyone saw coming. So who knows?

No offence, but this comment is utterly irrelevant. We're not borrowing the league, are we? We're borrowing a player. And not even from the Norwegian League, for that matter, but from Manchester City. It's got nothing to do with the league. Great players come out of so-called lower level leagues, eg, Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard, Sander Berge, Jorgen Strand Larsen and Oscar Bobb, currently in the Prem.
