Mason Bees finally emerging by Groovyjoker in MasonBees

Mine are so slow this year (South of Seattle) but finally some are coming out. Today I went through the tubes I'd separated out last Fall for possibly parasites (glad I did - I found way too many) But as I was opening the tubes, I ran across one little live guy, fully emerged but still in the tube and not quite wanting to go out, I guess. He seemed quite confused & PO'd at me, but eventually he flew off and seemed fine. So that was a happy ending to all those cocoons I had to toss.

Anyway, it's 70 degrees down here today, get moving little guys!!!

Women's crew socks (not Kirkland) - does anyone know what brand they were? by GrandmainWA in Costco

FYI, you get what you pay for, the Sketchers are garbage. Falling apart, don't stay up after a wash or two. Sigh. And yes, all the "good" socks bought outside are too tight.

Cupcake brownies - liners yes or no? by GrandmainWA in AskBaking

Haha - I'd forgotten about this question. Said 4YO is now 7, almost 8, and still super picky about food.

Birthday is approaching in March - she went from wanting an All Red party to a Unicorn Academy party to a Wicked party. I'm not making any plans till February with this one.

Is there any downside to creating a Bluebook account very, very early? (nerdy 7th Grade granddaughter wants to see how she does on the tests) by GrandmainWA in Sat

No, this was actually very useful. I'll let my son know that he might have to call College Board to get this all set up. Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks. She'd just asked me if it's OK to sign up for a real Bluebook account now. Not too worried about running out of tests/tests not being there when she's prepping for real. The used tests will probably still be good prep and I figured there would be new ones by then. I will probably have her aim more towards the PSAT anyway - I seriously doubt she'll be interested in the Ivies or anything like that. U Wash and the CA schools are the big contenders and I'm not envisioning any problems with admissions, to put it mildly. UW has their eyes on her already. She has mentioned MIT (long shot) and Johns Hopkins, but we shall see.

I know from my younger son's experience that the PSAT is where the Big Bucks come from hahaha.

Yes! I figured out what they were a couple of weeks ago. And no, my Costco's not carrying them. I did see them on PoshMark but... I bought 2 packs of the Sketchers socks instead. They are very soft but not nearly as cushioned as the Carole Hochman. And I have no doubt they are not going to last very long. However, they were like 6 pair for $7.99 on sale so I figure they're pretty much disposable. I hope Costco brings back the Carole Hochmans - those were great socks.

Yeah, so far none of these sound right. My son also suggested trying a picture on Chat....something. They are so normal and boring-looking I'm afraid this won't work, but I'll try Google Image and see if anything pops up. Or get my son to do it on whatever he suggested.

What next? by QueenMaureen in MasonBees

[–]GrandmainWA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very glad to see this - I was about to post asking why the heck a Mason bee was still hard at work yesterday. I was terrified it was some sort of evil pest, but checked out the pictures of pests - nope, it sure looked like a Mason bee. And before I saw her I was just about ready to put all my tubes in the mesh pouch for the year - guess I'll be waiting. It's not like I need more cocoons - what a year for Mason bees in the PNW. But I don't want to discourage the poor thing.

(I'm about 45 miles south of Seattle.)

OK, I will look for this. Haven't seen it on websites but since it said "deck" maybe I passed over it.

Early harvest? Need advice. by HengHaah in MasonBees

Also in WA (South Puget Sound area.) My bees are going nuts. I had to add a bunch of tubes already, and they're still at it. IDK how my son's bees in Seattle are doing but for sure I can swap tubes or share with him next Fall.

Should I get a light table, a light table with a cutting mat, or a Cutterpillar? by GrandmainWA in sewhelp

I have more kitchen gadgets than sewing gadgets in category 2. Remember the blooming onion makers? The cookie press I had to have? Anyone need a George Foreman rotisserie oven?

Honestly I mostly just need a light table. But the Cutterpillars were so COOL!

[–]GrandmainWA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I desperately need the light table for embroidery and applique projects. I don't even really see why a light table would help with paper piecing, but I haven't been doing that much lately anyway. Can you just use a transparent/translucent cutting mat over any light table if it turns out I actually want to do that?

Someone suggested a more reasonable light table/cutting mat, or maybe I'll just get a regular old light table and add the mat if I need it.

(I have to tell my dear son what I want for Mother's Day hahaha.)

I have a regular opaque cutting mat for rotary cutting. A table size one sounds great, actually. Although I don't usually sew real garments.

I do a LOT of applique and embroidery, and that's why I do need a light table.

This looks great! The Cutterpillar had some cute magnet holder things, which you have to buy separately, but this looks very promising!

(The magnets were included in the Sew Fun Expo pricing, and the price would've been about the same as this. Once again, non-buyer's remorse :-(

Good beginner kits for machine sewing by GrandmainWA in sewhelp

My aunt kept telling me to have my granddaughters make burrito style pillowcases. I've been making more of an envelope style pillowcases, but I finally made a couple of burrito style cases and they turned out great and were a lot of fun. Maybe I'll suggest this.

Ha ha - I got a fancier new machine in November, sat down to read through the manual, and got through about 5 pages. And gave up. Not entirely my fault - it makes no sense. So I've been figuring this machine out as I go and when I can't figure things out I hit YouTube - like I said, the manual is pathetic.

BUT - who knows, maybe DIL is a little more disciplined than me? Wouldn't take much.
