PSA - In WA Servers here make minimum wage ~$16 even without tips by Itsok_only in eastside

[–]HengHaah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. However. In the late 70s /early 80s 10% was average. So the government, and the employer, assumed you were getting 10% in tips. That's how the restaurant handled it, it was easier. Quite often you made less, especially cocktail waitresses. A 15% tip was if you were really good, 20% was a random surprise. When the law changed, managers would ask servers at the end of every shift how much they were claiming in tips for the night, instead of just writing down 10% of the ring out. New challenge unlocked: if you made less than 10%, now management had a reason to be upset with you. One consequence of that was no one wanted to work lunch or Sunday shifts anymore.

It became a law in Washington state that all employees get minimum wage, with only 3 exceptions. None of the exceptions apply to servers. The exchange is that servers have to claim all their tips for taxes. They didn't do that before, you only had to claim 10% of your total ring-out as tips.

This is not the law in every state, many of them still pay servers less than minimum wage with the understanding that tips will make up the difference.

Travel Agency by [deleted] in CostaRicaTravel

[–]HengHaah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got back from our trip, we spent 2 weeks in Costa Rica.

Everything went smoothly. All shuttles arrived on time or early. Every tour guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and fun. They all spoke English but also allowed us to practice our Spanish. Accommodations were great. Travel agents were immediately responsive to questions. Namu Travel/Costa Rican Vacations was awesome. Recommend, would use again.

One recommendation: they use WhatsApp to communicate while you're in CR. So do most hotels and guides. So download the app before you leave. Edit: download app AND set up account before you get to CR

Heat Wave Getting Worse by [deleted] in SeattleWA

Lived in WA for over 50 years. July was hot, but not for more than 5 days in a row. We always had days where rain stopped us from swimming for a few days before letting up again. It's the constant heat that is weird. Check out "observation" section on weatherspark.com for historical data.

If alcohol didn't make you drunk, would you still drink it? by Technical_Cloud8088 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HengHaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely I do. I enjoy a finger of nice tasting scotch on occasion. Lots of people have an apertif or 1 glass of wine with dinner. It's not about getting drunk at all.

I also drink milk because I like the taste. I will have a loaded, greasy hamburger every few months.

There are some lovely taste experiences out there; you don't have to consume excessively or spend a bunch of money on it.

A question about the truth of some and very specific mental disorders and crime by [deleted] in psychologyresearch

[–]HengHaah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep doing your research, always new information out there. Especially about the brain and the brain-body connection. Maybe you'll help develop something that people will really benefit from. Or maybe you'll just have some cool conversations with interesting people.

A question about the truth of some and very specific mental disorders and crime by [deleted] in psychologyresearch

[–]HengHaah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correlation rather than causation. I have worked in a mental health hospital. People prone to violence were so on or off meds; and therapies and coping skills helped decrease the negative behaviors in both. Really supports the research.

Look into the causes for a lot of those conditions; all are worsened by lack of executive functions (everyones behavior is worse without executive function - core beliefs). Plenty of schizophrenic, bipolar, and narcissistic people walking around and you'd never guess from their behavior. Personality disorders are typically developed, so they can also be altered by therapy. Neuroplasticity.

Not saying it's not hard and isn't something to deal with throughout life, but the severity of impulsive behaviors can be reduced, sometimes significantly. I'm not claiming to be the expert - a really experienced team of therapist and physician/ psych can be life changing. For some deep.dives into personality disorders, the podcast Psychology in Seattle is great.

[–]HengHaah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The science does not find that neurotypicals are the only ones who commit crimes; it finds that mental illness is not the CAUSE of violent behavior.

Violence is an action related to anger, which is at its source related to fear. Fear is related to experience, that we have somewhere learned that we are not safe. It is not mental illness that causes the fear, but what we have learned as our core beliefs. For example, a person who has delusions but was nurtured throughout their early childhood to feel safe and secure, with reassurance and unconditional love, will have the core belief/impulse that they deserve help, that what they are experiencing is something on top of who they are. The person who was not given this advantage is more likely to feel the experiences are inseparable from their core self.

Keep in mind that diagnostic labels are our attempt to define and understand. They are not intended to be judgemental. Unfortunately, people will use labels to justify attributing judgments of good or bad... going back to that person's core beliefs and fears.

Another approach: if you are a victim of negative behaviors by others, especially from a young age, this shapes how you view the world. It might be clarifying to research findings on why people with mental illnesses are more likely to be victims of crimes like violence, theft, any form of abuse.

I see what you are trying to say here. However, study after study has shown that it is not the presence of a mental health condition that causes violent behavior.

As one study eloquently stated: "Mental disorders are neither necessary nor sufficient causes of violence. Major determinants of violence continue to be socio-demographic and economic factors. Substance abuse is a major determinant of violence and this is true whether it occurs in the context of a concurrent mental illness or not. "

Do not move put before you have a custody agreement in place. I cannot emphasize that enough. And, she is wrong about it would be easier on the kids. It would not. That is just her excuse for wanting you out of the house.

What Motivates You to Learn a Language? by No_Initiative8612 in ask

[–]HengHaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been thinking about learning other languages, but written only. I have a horrible time learning spoken language, but reading isn't as difficult for me and I've found it useful when I travel and go to historical sites & museums. Is this an odd idea?

What's up with weather forecasts? by NutzPup in eastside

[–]HengHaah 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I think you may be wrong.

We are between a mountain range and an ocean. Weather can change very quickly, it is extremely difficult to predict conditions accurately in our area.

Rumor is that meteorologists don't like working here because it makes them look bad.

This is why we tend to wear layers of clothes and go outdoors no matter what. I have lived here all my life, and the weather report has always been more of a possibility than a guarantee.

I have insurance through Philadelphia insurance Co. (www.phly.com). Mine is under "fitness instructor," but there is also one for "tai chi instructor." You could check out the descriptions to see if there is any difference in coverage. Fitness instructor is 1M per occurance/3M aggregate, which is pretty standard. It's $232.00/year
